FairPlay made to play fair

Apparently that guy who cracked DVD encryption a while back has managed to put a foot in the door on hurting Apple's anti-competitive business practices. That is to say, he cracked FairPlay so that you can play music gotten from non-iTunes music stores on the iPod.

Take that Apple. Microsoft has nothing on Apple in anti-competitive business practices when looking at the mp3 market.

About bloody time. Kudos to the guy. He must be a bloody genius. I'm surprised no software company hasn't picked him up.

If they did, he wouldn't be able to do this kind of stuff any more and if he did they would be held liable.

I put stuff from eMusic on my iPod all the time--but that's because eMusic sells mp3's as opposed to this other DRM crap. Apple is certainly trying to stifle competition, but so are the other music companies. If they all sold mp3's, none of this would be a big deal.

Doesn't really matter to me; I don't use iTunes to buy music.

An easy way around that is to burn the albums onto CD's and then rip the CD's to MP3, and that MP3 won't be protected.

As if an audio CD.

I've got a SanDisk MP3 player, and that's generally what I do. And, not only do you get the MP3's, but you'll also have a CD that's compatible with your average CD player too.

I think you and Yahoo have that the wrong way round - he has cracked Fairplay to allow songs downloaded from iTunes store to be played on non-iPod MP3 players - iTunes copy protect cracked (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6083110.stm). Of course the non-hacker way to do this is to burn the tracks to CD and then rip them back to iTunes.

I've never had a problem playing anything I have downloaded from any site on my iPod.
