Well, I'm screwed.

I got my English exam on Friday, and turns out, everytime I read something for study, it doesn't register.

Any last minute exam advice, NSG?

fuck it.
take it and don't think about after you turned it in, and get drunk or something.
The Potato Factory
25-10-2006, 11:41
Yeah, well, I don't think that I need a particular impressive ENTER score to get into one of the courses I want, but I'm nervous anyway. I want to do decent, at least.
Babelistan
25-10-2006, 11:45
my point was don't fret so much, read and relax, and as a good measure afterwards do something lame, like get drunk.

Get drunk. I got drunk the night before my exam of Theoretical Physics and passed with a score of 24 out of 30. Yeah!
At the end I was totally spent and out of my head because the oral exam lasted 2 hours (couldn't even recognise an internal product).

My Old Man used to say 'If you don't know it now, you never will', but you will be suprised though just how much you do know, and will fly through the exam
The Potato Factory

Well, I think I'll do decent in the written argument, and the argument analysis, and I should do ok in the text analysis for Lantana, but I'll really drop the ball on I'm Not Scared.

Yeah, camp out at your school library and do it there.

I can't study when I have distractions around me. (Like now, even though I have two essays due in and an exam on friday)

20. Why?

Cram to the point that you fall asleep after the exam.

Are you in uni, or what?
Kanabia

Yeah. Final year.

What about you? I'm guessing it's a VCE exam, correct?
The Potato Factory

Yep. It's depressing. What are you doing, and what ENTER did you get?

And can you help reassure me that my ENTER doesn't matter for TAFE?

Silly Victorians. "ENTER"?

I got an OP 2, and that was fine.

For your exam...what sort of stuff are they testing?
Kanabia
25-10-2006, 12:20
Yep. It's depressing. What are you doing, and what ENTER did you get?

Arts at monash.

I got roughly 78 (I'd like to think I could have done better, but I recall that I got a study score above 35 in all of my subjects except Japanese anyway, but was unfortunate enough to mostly pick subjects that got marked down...but meh. Doesn't matter anymore.)

And can you help reassure me that my ENTER doesn't matter for TAFE?

Yeah, I wouldn't worry. There will be heaps of people that put in no effort and as ENTER is judged against them, even the most minimal amounts of study should give you enough.

I have no idea what an OP 2 is.

Although the system of percentile ENTER system certainly seems to make sense to me (at least in principle. The execution is horribly flawed. Top marks in humanities subjects will likely give you a lesser score than mediocre marks in science, but I guess that's just to discourage us useless humanities types and turn us into manual labour.).

I think the system is pretty similar.

Everyone does a "QCS test" at the end Year 12. Then they rank schools and subjects according those scores.

Then they look at your results, and your performance relative to the other students in your class.

In the end they come up with an OP Score between 1 and 25, 1 being the best, 25 being reserved for people in a coma.

Well, Kanabia, looks like you're a lot smarter/motivated than me. I'm fairly smart, but, due at least in part to my Asperger's Syndrome, I have trouble expressing it.

What texts did you do for English, anyway?

I love exams, they're so much fun, espescially when the prof gives you stuff on the exam that you didn't expect to see at a 500 level course. You know, things like "list the dates these things occured on" and "tell who was President when this happened." Hell, I was doing more serious analytic work in eighth grade than what I was doing on this midterm.

Well, I'm not sure what this exam would be asking of you (English doesn't seem to lend itself to studying very well, does it?)...but whatever it is, you could probably spend your time better than on NSG.

What I also like to do before exams is to get up very early (like 4AM early) and study then. Much less distractions at that time, and once you're over this initial tired stage you feel at the top of your game for a few hours. Just gotta keep in mind when the exam is, otherwise you'll fall asleep during it. :p

Oh hell no! Didn't I mention all the work I had due in, but i'm meanwhile still wasting time here? :p

In year 12? hmmm...

Oedipus Rex, The Divine Wind, ....uh...

Apart from those two, I really can't remember which were year 11 and which were year 12.

actually this may be a good idea. over here, at least, english exams tend to be more about your reasoning and essay-writing abilities, and your ability to draw out relavent information from the text, etc, as well as debating and evaluating your point with such evidence.

debating on NS could be your best port of call :)

I agree.

Hm. I find that there's plenty to analyse in creative stories. They don't just come out of nowhere. Haven't read that one, though.

the ones i'm on could actually save me a shitload of money... even the teeniest sip of booze and i feel like i've had a good couple of pints. give me a couple of fingers of a nice whiskey and i'll be out for the night (or perhaps temporarily batshit, yeah...)

Well, said friend seemed to think that everyone in the world wanted to see his penis, so perhaps you should refrain. >.>

Get stoned. My best exam result at university came from me taking the exam while stoned. I did worry a bit towards the end because the effects were wearing off, and looking back through the paper I thought that everything I'd written was a great steaming pile of donkey droppings.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be doing that. >_>

I think English is a big pile of crap, though. I'm never going to analyse a text again, and it's not going to help me in life.

Depends what you want to do. If you become, for example, a data analyst, it will help you. If you become a professional sportsperson, it's unlikely it'll help you.

While I admittedly ignore the warnings on medicines far too often, anti-depressants are not the sort I'd cheat on.

If you scroll down it has some questions you could think about that pick out key themes and could help you to analyse the book by thinking about these kinda things *nods* :)

Testing yourself by trying to write answers to as many of them as you can could also really help you feel more confident in your writing skills, and gathering information from the book, which are the two basic things *nods*

Good luck :)
