Arnie - the Prezinator?

Normally I don't really follow Californian domestic politics, but this recent Spiegel article got me thinking.

Schwarzenegger Steals Thunder from Democrats
By Marc Hujer in Sacramento, California

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has once again reinvented himself. While his fellow Republicans suffer from the president's decline in popularity, Schwarzenegger is billing himself as a savior of the environment. Voters trust him, and his name has now become just as closely associated with politics as it once was with bodybuilding and acting.

He's become quite a decent politician, and certainly one who attacks issues. He's also managed to regain popularity and pretty much terminate the opposition in his state (hehe).

His dream was to become president, but the constitution won't let him (which I assume is because of a relic back from a time when colonials were fighting immigrants of sorts from Britain).

It's not gonna happen, but would you want that bit of the constitution ammended? Would Arnie make a good president?

Yes, I would like that bit of the Constitution amended. No, I doubt he would make a good president.

Though I also doubt he can get the Republican party nomination.

Yes and no. I'd like to see that part of the Presidential requirements removed because I think it is a relic and it's a bit hypocritical that a country that puts a large chunk of its national identity into its immigrant heritage won't let immigrants run the show.

As for Arnie, hell no I don't want him as President. If I still lived in California, I'd be voting for Angelides in two weeks.

I, personally, wouldn't mind amending the constitution to strip that out, though I doubt that will ever happen.

As for the Govenator... no, I don't think I would vote for him as president... possibly because being from California's next door neighbor, I'm having too much fun watching that circus to have my entertainment removed.

big surprise there.

as for the OP, i do think the constitution should be amended but you should have to be a citizen and reside in the U.S. for at least 25 years. Maybe more.

since they gave up pretending that the document matters in most matters, i think the governator could get away with it. assuming that the bush movement lets a relative outsider like him have access at all, of course.

And the secret clone dynasty of Bush's they're building. Why do you think he's so much less conservative on stem cell issues?

The scary thing is that Jeb! is the smart brother and he actually believes all that PNAC shit. Imagine Dubya's foreign policy by a guy who isn't a complete moron, and you have a truly terrifying prospect.

Less conservative???

His only veto to date was used to block stem-cell research, and you say he is less conservative on stem-cell issues?

Can I have some of whatever it is you're smoking?

If you loved Reagan, you'd will find the Presidentator less than impressive.

If you HATE Reagan, you'd will find a way out of the country.

I never understood that bit about a foreigner-born, US-naturalised US citizen cannot be elected as President of the USA. Albert Einstein got US naturalisation, still he couldn't candidate to presidency (if he ever wanted to).

Anyway, Schwarzennegger is too far right-wing for me.

I think it should be amended. It should be the right of every citizen to be able to run for office, not just those born there. I wouldn't vote for him though.

I dont really know much about Arnie as a politician. On the amendment though, I kind of go against my other leanings when I say to keep it how it is. I simply prefer that only US citizens who are born here be able to run.

Umm...

Chances are even a Republican president would appoint an entirely new Cabinet, thus relieving Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, and the rest of thier jobs.

Let alone a Democratic President.

Bush comes one day closer to handing the White House back to the Democrats with every day that the war goes on.

Lets say McCain gets the Rep bid, and by some miracle, gets elected.

You think hes gonna keep Karl Rove on staff?

By 08, the Dems will control the House and Senate.
You will be able to thank Bush for that.

It will be his only positive contribution in office.

Ok, I'm hearing plenty of people arguing that Arnie would make an awful President, but no-one is speaking up in order to defend him.

I'm from Australia, so American politics largely eludes me apart from the fact that not a lot of people like Bush and that Rice woman has got big teeth and a name that would make Tolkein proud. I'm just wondering why people don't think he would be a good president? I've largely heard good things about him, but thats from the media and we all know how biased those sources are.

So, would someone please enlighten me as to why he would make a bad president? I'm genuinely curious.
