Pff, cars.

I'm not sure what it says about my laziness or lack of it that I've never bothered to learn how to drive, despite having been old enough for more than seven years.

An aside on laziness, though. Recently, on my way home from town, having walked from a friend's house to the bus station, I encountered probably the laziest bastards ever. A couple, not beyond their early to mid thirties and not evidently suffering any physical impediment to their locomotion save the fact that both could stand (no pun intended) to lose a few pounds, having got on at the station (obviously enough the start-point on the route), surprised me and drew looks from all aboard when they pressed the bell thingi and got off at the first stop... around the back of the station.

I've never seen anyone get off there, before. It's just for people getting on, in the event that they're running late and don't want to miss the bus departing while they're scurring through the bowels of Britain's largest bus station. Even doddery old women and people with false legs don't use the bus to go that far, and it almost unfailingly takes longer to ride the bus through that part of town than to walk.

Erm. I'm sorry, this tangent has become longer than the opening post, but, man, that was lazy. The bloke was wearing a football strip, for frick's sake! If you're physically able but can't be bothered to walk the length of a football pitch, do you not feel at all stupid wearing an Arsenal shirt with Henry across the back?

Gah. Carry on.

where I learned (and got tested) Parallel parking was a must. on Central Maui there are two large tractor tires filled to the brim with concrete. many cars have been wreaked hitting those tires... :D

During the test, you have to parallel park between them.

It's not a must here. In the test you have to do two of the following - reversing round a corner, parallel parking, reverse parking and 3 point turn (which gets you a funny look from the examiner if the road is wide enough for you to turn round in one go, and you take advantage of this).

Why do people always see a new invention that saves time and say "look how lazy we're getting" when we're actually working longer and longer hours. Also it not stopping you from learning how to parallel park its stop you from ever having to doing it (if you own a lexus) which would save a hell of alot of time. Also not everyone found it as easy as you and often cars are damaged as a fault of parallel parking, sometimes there is no where to park and people have to fit there cars into really small spaces which should be helped by this gadget.

Such pessimism. I think that our technology will advance to the point where it would be perfectly safe. I'm sur that allowing a computer to control traffic would be much better then allowing humans to drive themselves. Humans after all get tired and drunk. Computers don't have those flaws.

Other then some disasterous crash or virus like shown in the movies... but then it is the movies.

It was only semi-serious. I'd probably be a bit worried at first, but after that I'd be fine. Thing is, if there were one or two road accidents that were the result of failure on the part of the computer, then there'd be a mass rejection of them in favour of manually operated cars. Because people are dumb.

One of our favorite activities on balmy summer evenings is to sit on our front porch and watch the neighbors (try to) parallel park. I think this will improve things greatly and save an incredible amount of time. Now, if they would add a feature that makes sure that the minimum amount of space between cars is used, I'm sure we'll find most streets have three or four more parking spaces than previously thought. :p

Yeah. Even a couple dozen deaths a year to possible "computer error" is much better then the thousands who die on the road every year in this country. But you are right. Unless it worked perfectly people would demand that we get rid of it. Shortsighted fools.

-snip-

Perhaps they didn't know where they were going, or had used a computer routefinder that told them to do that. I've used the online Government one before for train times, and it does often tell you to catch buses for journey's that, when you know the route, you'd never consider doing anything but walking.

I also use the Tube on my usual journey for just one stop in one place. It's not because I'm lazy - it's just quicker to make the interchange to the other line and travel one stop than it is to get out of the station and walk.

thats not nearly as lazy as having a car that parks itself in your garage.

though I do like the idea of a car driving/parking itself - long trips would be so much better asleep, oh and PLUS no more drunkstoned/cracked out drivers! THey also have that braking system coming out that detects collisions, gives you a warning and applys the brakes for you if you dont.

self-paralell parking is a good thing. i hate paralel parking. i can't even spell it (double letters, argh). and i hate waiting for people to park while they block the entire road trying to get into an easy space, especially if they have big cars and no passengers. i tend to avoid parallel parking if i can, luckily i only drive in jersey where street parking is severely limited and multi-stories abound. i can do it, at least i could when i passed my test, but it took me an age to learn and i think i've done parrallell parking two or three times since i started driving 5 years ago.

We weren't tested on it, and I'm getting my license in December (I got a voucher for the test from taking the test during the driver's ed course, but I still have to wait until I've had my permit for a year in order to get my license.)
