Check it out here (http://www.fantasycongress.com). If you're interested in playing, I just set up an NS league for us all. The league name is NationStates, and the PW is cluich. I'll activate the league in a few days, when I think we've got a decent number of players.

When I checked before signing on here, we had 15 players so far. I'm going to leave it open for another couple of days before activating it to see if we can get anymore. The maximum's a hundred. I doubt we'll reach that, but it'd be nice to have a whole lot of people involved.

Meh, not a big fan of fantasy hockey. I've yet to find a system I like. As far as fantasy sport goes, I stick to baseball, American football and English football. I'm taking a break from the latter two this year, but when I saw a report on this Congress thing on CNN, I couldn't resist giving it a try.

Lol, well just because I've heard of them doesn't necessarily mean they've put a lot of legislation through Congress. Richard Pombo, for example, is a Representative from my area (not the Rep for my district though) who is notorious for being hideously corrupt. But that doesn't mean he's sponsored a lot of legislation; he's only on my team because I've heard of him. :p

Pombo has an extensive legislative history (http://www.fantasycongress.org/fc/congressmen_info?id=168), as reported on the site (the link to legislator rankings is on the home page). I don't know whether he got there by being a conscientious and diligent legislator, or by knowing where the skeletons are buried. In the game terms, he's an effective legislator, and a solid middle fielder in the House Supporting Lineup group.

In FantasyCongress, ethics are irrelevant to effectiveness. That's a lesson all NS players should already know.

Interesting. I never hear anything about his legislation, just that he's a corrupt schmuck, and stuff about his race against McNerney this year. Of course, as you said, ethics don't have anything to do with effectiveness in FantasyCongress - I was just making the point that just about everyone on my team was chosen because I knew their names and not because I was aware of their legislative records. :p In the past, this kind of approach hasn't worked out so well for me when playing fantasy games.

And thanks for the tip on legislator rankings, I'll have to go back and edit my team now.

I just wanted to make sure it was just NSers that we all know and are (semi-)comfortable with. Plus, NSers are usually more politically oriented than your random surfer of teh intarwebs and, as such, are more likely to stick with the game.

Yeah, it gets slow from time to time. I doubt they were expecting the rush of traffic they got when they were picked up by CNN. I'm managing to draft my team okay now, albeit a little slowly.

Okay, just went through the rules again. Jello, in response to your question:

The Members of Congress (MCs) on your team are your players: they will be responsible for scoring the points. How? By moving bills through their chamber of Congress, the opposite chamber of Congress, and onto the President's desk for his signature.

The progress of each bill in the game is not anything simulated or imaginary; every bill in the database is an actual piece of legislation moving through Congress this very minute. Our database is updated daily, so your progress in the game reflects the progress of real legislators moving passing real legislation.

The seven basic stages through which your MCs must push legislation - and by which earn their points - are as follows:

Introduction in their Chamber (House or Senate)
Approval by Committee
Vote on the Floor of their Chamber
Introduction in the opposite Chamber
Approval by Committee in opposite Chamber
Vote on the Floor of opposite Chamber
President's Signature

Obviously the above list is not exhaustive. Fantasy Congress factors in other processes such as the Rules Committee in the House, conference if the bill is not passed in an identical format in both Chambers, amendments to the legislation, and many more.

Doesn't say anything about re-election, but I wouldn't be surprised if that comes into play somehow. But who knows? We'll just have to wait and see, I guess.
