The Singularity

Wouldnt it be so cool to have a computer which has self awareness. Theres this argument called the singularlity wherein we build a machine which when activated can think for itself and because it can process information at a much faster rate than mere humans it will become so intelligent within such a short period of time that it will be god like to us
nah, id rather keep my computers ignorant thanks
Remember kids, just say no to robocracy.

hmmm, does Self-Awareness = Consiousness. Im tempted to answer both ways, but I'll go for 'no'. I see no danger in a computer posessing self-awareness. self-awareness doesnt mean independent thought.
Last week or so my elec teacher was telling us about some supercomputer that was built to be programmed to be human. Some people, including one of the programmer's sons, interacted with it and it formed rules about how to act based on what they said, and asked questions to resolve conflicts(which it discovered as it 'slept'). At one stage it asked the aforementioned son if he was a computer, or if it was a boy. At which stage they freaked out and turned it off.
Interesting if true.
God already knows I look at porn, no need for my computer to realize i am a filthy scum bag as well.

The only problem is that it can only process information at the rate that it can receive information, and, that is heavily reliant on it's ability to perceive information.

The way to achieve this- if it weren't a horrible horrible idea that will only end in blood, tears, and a final stand against our robot overlords- would be to build a computer that builds better computers, which in turn build better computers. Etc, until one reaches self awareness.

Windows and self-awareness... Thank you. No.
What's next? The crazy computer asylum?!? ;)
BTW, remember HAL and "Mother". You don't want your computer to have an own agenda!

Meh. I'm not sure if I believe that this 'singularity' will even occur. Scientists are afterall notoriously bad at predicting the future.

I'm afraid I can't let you post that Dave, I mean GN.

Fast processing =/= sentience
Computers are ultimately still limited to binary formating, they cannot process anything more than that. Once a computer independently produces a philosophical viewpoint, then we should worry...

That's exactly what you would say if you saw the basic mechanics of the human brain, you'd doubt that it could achieve self-awareness, but it evidently can. I believe the same will eventually become true of artifical brains.

Yet there is far too much about the brain that we do not understand.

Computers really don't process information that much faster than we do. It only seems that way because people forget that they are constantly processing massive amounts of information, via all five senses.
