No HALO Movie

Awww, ain't that a shame? I am rather glad they decided to nix the idea. I am really getting tired of videogame-movie adaptions.

Variety Article (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117952317.html?categoryid=13&cs=1)

Hell, its bad enough that Vin Diesel is doing an adaption of the Hitman game. Besides, we already had an FPS to movie done, another isn't needed. My opinion.

Okay, this sucks.

I like HALO. Quite a bit as it happens. It's like art in my x-box. I would have really enjoyed a good HALO movie, and while a realize that the chances of that happening are remote I feel we should still roll the dice; so to speak.

I wanted it done, but nor by Peter Jackson. So it evens out for me.

OK, first of all, this was not going to be just another stupid video game movie. It had Peter Jackson on it (Lord of the Rings, King Kong, you get my drift) -- how could you do any better? Also, Neil Blomkamp (the director) has had a good track record of making edgy and provocative short films that mesh well with the Halo mythos.

Secondly, the movie is not dead. Fox and Universal may have pulled out (and acted quite dastardly, IMHO), but the project is continuing. WETA, Jackson's production studios, are still working on the movie, and Microsoft is currently in negotiations with several potential investors.

On another note, anybody notice how Fox has a tendency of dumping promising projects? They cancelled Futurama, Firefly, and Family Guy -- all popular shows with strong fan bases -- at the peak of their popularity. That's not even counting all the shallow crap they've allowed on the air (Faux News, Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?, etc.)

In short, I'm angry, but still hopeful.
Qwystyria
21-10-2006, 06:52
Well, since they dumped it, it probably would've been great. They seem to have a habit of dumping the best things in favor of absolute junk. (Per the firefly series... probably the best american TV in ages, yet it got cancelled before I ever even heard of it. Morons.)

That said, I'm glad they're not making it - I'm really sick of too many movie-adaptions and sequels and things. Get an original idea already!

"What I clearly read, and correct me if I am wrong, was that Fox and Universal Pictures just pulled out of their share of the production, that does not mean that the movie is dead. As it clearly states in the article, they are still making the movie. They just don't have the funds to ship it or to finish it I guess. So all of you Halo Movie hopefulls, keep your heads up. Halo will not die if we have a say in it! Hell, I'll be willing to lend a hand. Here's five bucks."

No but there have been a few crap ones lately.

There was also Streetfighter, Alone in The Dark and now we have an awful looking Dead or Alive to add to the list. Hitman is coming and so is Max Payne (though that started as a comic).

I liked Silent hill and Resident evil was ok IMO, the others were shit though. I'm sure there's probably been more. I'm interested to see how Halo turns out, it'll arrive at some point.

Yeah when I first saw that there was gonna be a woman as the lead I thought OMG! I've only played the original game (ps1!). I avoided the film to start with and then was told it was good so I watched it and it is! + pretty gory(satisfyingly gory!).

I didn't know about Max Payne as a comic until fairly recently when I saw an article in an XBOX mag about games turned into movies. I'm not happy with Vin Diesel being chosen as the role of Agent 47 for Hitman, he's a shit actor. Luckily 47 doesn't have to say too much.

They've tried lots of game to movie conversions. It usually sucks. Off the top of my head the list includes: Street Fighter, Double Dragon, Dungeons and Dragons, Fist of the North Star, Super Mario Brothers, Blood Rayne, Clue... Suck suck suck suck suck suck. I haven't seen Doom, but I'd wager another suck could be added to the list.

The main problem these movies almost always have is that they never seem to understand what drew people to the game in the first place. They try to make a movie that will appeal to the sort of people who watch Bruce Willis movies because they classify all action movies as just Action Movies. Which require a hero that a beer-drinking, bowling, pick-up truck driving country music fan who never went to college or read a book for fun. Such formulaic movies turn off the sort of people (usually sci-fi fans) who are drawn to the initial game that "inspired" the movie, but the fact that it's based on a game turns off the Bruce Willis fans.

The Splinter Cell movie someone mentioned might work, but that's because Splinter Cell is based on a novel. So really it would be a novel to movie conversion, with a video game in the middle. And it's Tom Clancy, whose work appeals to the broader action movie audience.

Well, I said game, not video game, and there's significant crossover in the demographics. I don't think I've ever met a D&D player who wasn't also a gamer.

You'll notice that in my post there is one fewer "suck" than movies listed. The absent "suck" was the one I did not attribute to Clue because, while it wasn't exactly quality cinema, it was pretty charming despite the double predictability of the butler and the guy with the English accent having done it.

On another note, I actually rather liked the first Mortal Combat movie, although it's ironic that the one scene where they highlighted Cage's splits-crotchshot move was when he executed it against the dragon guy, the one male character in the game on whom the move doesn't work. The sequel however sucked so bad that when I tried to walk out, the vacum pulled me back to my seat. It was like watching someone else play the video game for 5 hours. I know it wasn't 5 hours long, but at least when watching someone else play the game you can call them an asshole for not sharing.
