Let's Talk About Internet Trolls! ***NO TROLLING***

http://hometown.aol.com/intwg/trolls.htm

Definitions:

In Internet terminology, a troll is usually someone who enters an established community such as an online discussion forum, and posts inflammatory, rude, repetitive, offensive, off-topic or otherwise disruptive messages designed intentionally to annoy or antagonize the existing members or alter the flow of discussion, including the personal attack of calling others trolls e.g. Mr. Seven and Leicester Lantern. Often, trolls assume multiple aliases, or sock puppets.

An Internet "troll" is a person who delights in sowing discord on the Internet. He (and it is usually he) tries to start arguments and upset people.

Trolls see Internet communications services as convenient venues for their bizarre game. For some reason, they don't "get" that they are hurting real people. To them, other Internet users are not quite human but are a kind of digital abstraction. As a result, they feel no sorrow whatsoever for the pain they inflict. Indeed, the greater the suffering they cause, the greater their 'achievement' (as they see it). At the moment, the relative anonymity of the net allows trolls to flourish.

Trolls are utterly impervious to criticism (constructive or otherwise). You cannot negotiate with them; you cannot cause them to feel shame or compassion; you cannot reason with them. They cannot be made to feel remorse. For some reason, trolls do not feel they are bound by the rules of courtesy or social responsibility.

Perhaps this sounds inconceivable. You may think, "Surely there is something I can write that will change them." But a true troll can not be changed by mere words.

Remember, no trolling. . . :p

i like poking trolls. and some of my posts might be considered trollish although i've neve been pulled up for it.

edit: i'm not entirely sure of the distinction between trolling and flamebaiting.

I have never trolled nor ever had a puppet troll. I enjoy debate and discussion and just do not have the ambition nor the ability to facetiously misrepresent my opinions.

I can find humor in some trolls of the past but for the most part they are just annoying, and would get my personal blood pressure up too much if I were to troll

Remember, no trolling. . . :p

I am most certainly a troll, by this defintion, and so is anyone who is new to an "established community" and has views that that community finds "annoying" or "antagonistic".

A community who actually KICKS OUT a troll, under that above definition of troll, instead of simply ignoring, or better yet engaging and using, said troll is a community of little babies who would rather suck each other's thumbs (or other body parts more likely) than engage in actual conversation with adults.

To me, trolls are good, and can at the very least simply be ignored, but are most useful as "whetstones" for topic discussions.

Little infantile blatherers, and weenie assed complainers about "manners" and "Mommy come save me from the bad bad man/woman!"-types are bad, and should be ignored (but not banned) by all,.. unless they say something that is actually interesting, in which case they should be conversed with until they commence to whining and calling for Mommy again.

So is this a community of complaining babies, or a community of adults?

You decide.

At least I know what a troll is now, after this thread...

I tend to agree with the poster who said (I paraphrase) 'anybody new with a different opinion' could be construed as a troll. But I fall short of the 'can't convince them with a logical argument / have no empathic feelings' part of the definition.

Besides, Jennifer Aniston was HOT in that troll movie (and by that I mean Leprachaun).

I've seen a lot of trolls come and go on NS and it's surprising how hard it is to be a good troll. I don't mean sucking in the odd n00b with something outlandish, but actually being able to continuously suck people in.

The best trolls are the one's where no body is completely sure if they're a troll at all..

Then their are the wimpy trolls, which troll on boards where trolling is either encouraged or is an official troll hangout.

on a side note, i had a thought earlier today that mtae might be naliitr rather than colodia or whatever the name of that troll that was on here a while ago was. just cuz mtae's height of activity came at a point when naliitr was away for a while and they have a very similar writing style. plus new naliitr keeps agreeing with mtae at strategic moments. just a theory.

I can see your logic, but I am hesitant to agree. Soviestan cleverly noted today that MTAE was using british spelling on the word 'labour'. He really got defensive, and tried to gloss over with some BS story about being english-second-language from some country in Eastern europe (learned english from British education). A laughed for about 15 minutes watching him squirm and flail! It was in that slavery thread, most awesome.

I think he meant cornelieu, everyone keeps accusing MTAE of being him or UNA. Naliitir makes sense, but I want to check if Nalitiir uses british spelling...

I disagree. New people with different opinions make conversations, including digital ones, interesting. A troll is someone who thrives on random babble, hateful slurs, shock value, disruption, etc.

A psychoanalytical theory: Trolls who partake in the behavior described above are sometimes using these behaviors as an outlet for latent sociopathic tendencies, hence the inability to reason or be empathetic.

BTW, how do you do the "Quote" function on these threads?

It's only legalized for those that are funny. I trolled once, as some guy called All-Loving Christ(Thread went for a crapload of pages. Look for "You Are All Shameful"). The account was DEATED and I was modsmacked as soon as they noticed.

DCD, on the other hand, went for what, weeks, months as Jesussaves? Come ON! No fair.

I have credible intelligence that MTAE is definitely not UNA. Plus UNA doesnt use British spelling( I would be shocked if he knew how) Although Nalitir does make sense. Both posters seem to be awfully simple minded.(no offense to either)

I have to say looking at the british vs. american spelling thing, and all the time Naliitr has agreed with MTAE at critical times in his threads...I'm kinda getting convinced that MTAE is naliitr's puppet.

Is it really that difficult to learn the spelling mannerisms of British v. American ?

I mean it shouldn't involve too much labour...just smoke a couple fags and figure it out...

no...but UNA never did before, I don't see a reason why he would start now. The big bit of evidence is how he reacted when he got called out for it, he got real defensive and made up this tripe about being from an E. Europe country and learned english in a UK school before moving to america.

No, I don't think Naliitr is MTAE. I do believe that MTAE was RealAmerica before it was deleted.

RA seemed to pop up after BarryGoldwater and his puppet USalpenstock disappeared. Although it would appear that MTAE is even further rightist than those two were. Just guessing. And of course Corneliu has completely disappeared, along with AlleghenyCounty. Hmmmm.
