Some might say I'm luck to be alive...

Well we'll start this story at the school bell ringing the ende of the day. I came outside and it was raining and it started getting quite windy as well. The metal flagpole was actually bending and I was thinking the flag might snap off. So, I decided to wait awhile at school to see if it would stop even for a few minutes. It eventually did and I told my friend "I guess I'll roll the dice and go home now". Little did I know at the time, I had rolled a 7 in effect. I walked on home and it stayed just very windy and no rain. I come down the road for my house and see some branches and such on my lawn. I carry on to see what is one of those events that changes your life forever. The giant double oak that was on the side of my property had lost half of itself to the wind. At over one hundred years old, this tree has seen a lot. It will be greatly missed.

I will be uploading pics later tonight.

I went to a place today that's call Oakham Hall. I didn't know you could get ham from oaks. I wonder if there's a way to get bacon as well.

"Ham" is short for a term that can be related to the modern English "hamlet", place that we're living it that we call home, and related to the Germanic and Nordic "heim". "Oakham", therefore, would translate as "the place we live that's near oaks". I think that etymologically it's originally Nordic/Germanic. Other notable uses of the suffix "ham" in towns and cities: Westham, Birmingham, Berchem (Berg-hem), Mannheim, etc...

On topic: interesting stuff. Sounds like you consider it a truly pivotal moment. Just glad no-one got hurt, barring the tree ofcourse...

Nah, you wouldn't have died. Trees fall pretty slowly, they're creaking and groaning for ages, giving you plenty of time to run out of the way. Even if it did hit you I notice that its being held up by the car, so there's no chance of you being crushed by it.

In fact, the only danger would have been if it landed straight on your skull, but that is incredibly unlikely.

True, but my mom saw it fall and I don't think it fell slowly.

That car is not holding up the tree, it's holding itself up. The wood is all good, just the roots were weak.

I really can't get out of the shock of it not being up. I left it yesterday morning...It always looked strong. Trees can be deceiving.

...root rot in older trees which may not be apparent on the outside, often only being discovered when the trees come down in a strong gale. Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oak#Diseases_and_pests)

I don't get how you nearly died. I tihnk the chances of you being exactly where it fell with no time to jump out of the way are pretty tiny. Getting run over by a drunk driver as you walked home was more likely.

Hey Sel Appa, when did the tree fall... could it have been about the time you would've been walking up your driveway... if you had not waited?

To OP:

Man, that sucks. Was there any damage to your home itself, or did the tree just land all over your lawn? I only read the first 3 posts, mind you...
