Dresnok, Charles Jenkins, Jerry Wayne Parrish and Larry Allen Abshier allegedly defected to North Korea in 1963, while stationed at the Korean Demilitarised Zone that separates the two Koreas. "I was fed up with my childhood, my marriage, my military life -everything else was finished and there was only one place to go" James Joseph Dresnok,
US defector to North Korea Jenkins, who surrendered to US authorities and served a month in jail for desertion, now lives in Japan.

If this guy were to return to the US what punishment if any should he recieve? Personally I think he should be stripped of citizenship in any case.

Court martial and some jail time if found guilty. Though I don't see him returning anytime soon.

Defecting and deserting are not the same.

Even so, here's how I think they should be punished

Defecting = loss of citizenship, forbidden from ever stepping foot again in the U.S.

Deserting = Court-martial, 6-12 months' community service

Sewage labour.

It's good, because it's a punishment without being inhumane.

The guy defected and deserted but was only done for desertation.

And Kif, as the most attractive male, will be snoo-snooed by the most beautiful women of Amazonia. Then the large women. Then the petite women. Then the large women again."

The guy must be in his mid-60's, and this was half a century ago.

You'd think people would be concentrating on more pertinent issues.

I'm pleased for him. He was fed up with life and took a risk, and things got better once he'd got used to his new country.

I'm not sure about the parade, but I would personally make this man a sandwich.
Provided that he was willing to provide the meat. And the bread.
Oh, and any other fixings he might want.

I suppose I was trying to judge the time limits of peoples revulsion to this kind of thing.50 years ago this man would have been vilified in the harshest terms. Now it seems that people are thinking 'so what, its an old man'. I suppose that in another 50 years people will think the same of someone like John Walker Lindh.

I believe the guy the thread is about should never be allowed to step foot in the US again.

They defected to North Korea!? I guess the sin is the punishment in this case.

But didn't it say he already surrendered to US forces and now lives in Japan? Why would there be any finding of anything if he's already gotten punished. Slap on the wrist though it may be.

Well to me their lives in NK couldnt be great so just keep em there and when the bombs drop and the food supply is cut off, they can stay.

If it were during wartime and he defected to the enemy it would be different.
It wasnt during the korean war so I figure punishment ought to include a courts martial with dishonorable discharge and since he deprived the US of his services he should spend the remainder of his full promised enlistment time doing groundskeeping at Arlington for no pay. To think about it quietly. Also some compensation for the wife which he was unable to face would be nice, especially if it is the unfortunate case that he also had any children with her that were also deserted. Im a bit surprised the North Koreans wanted his dumbass in 1963 TBH.
