so, I got a new pair of clown overalls today, but they are just plain overalls that I have to make into clown overalls. I plan to "customize" them this weekend, but was looking for some new and fresh and silly ideas as to exactly how to do that.

I am already plannning the random patch thing, but would like something less usual, something original to do as well (or instead of)

I have about $3 to spend to do this so if you guys have some new uses for things I might find around the house that would be great.

So, whatcha got in the way of ideas?

colorful paint splatters and smears always look cool and can add tons of color...maybe get the kids in on it to add hand prints, or better, foot prints

Paint them with wavy horizontal orange and white stripes, alternating the colors as you go.

Howzabout an outlandishly oversized flower made of colorful scrap fabric where the lapel would be if overalls had a lapel? Also animals roaming around with you in your overalls are funny. Especially pigs. If you have a plush pig whose head can stick out the side of the overalls it would be a plus. You can never go wrong by accessorizing overalls with a corn cob pipe, red long johns, or hillbilly hats.

Go through with a needle and some scissors and pull out little strips of the threading so that the overalls are then covered in tassles. You can then glue things to the end of them, whatever you can find that isn't too heavy, so that when you move you clack.

Any lady clown needs a drawstring handbag (pillowcase and rope?) that matches her coveralls and jewelery made from the finest rubber balloons.

i don't even know what "clown overalls" are
though my boss did call me 'a creative' today :)

how about splashing paint all over 'em and claiming you're a messy clown, or something? (read: i have no fucking clue)

I found a mason jar of multicolored buttons in the garage......maybe I can sew random buttons on them?

You could take lots of scraps of ribbons and sew them on, just lay out straight and sew down the middle, in any direction, any length, so it looks like a big game of pickup sticks when you are done. To complete that costume add a fringe of ribbon pieces to whatever headgear (hat, headband) you like, and to the cuffs of a shirt.

That would certainly work, just be careful not to fall down or hug anyone too vigorously while wearing them... bruises might ensue if there are too many buttons.

OOhhh, run the strands through the larger buttons and sew the smaller buttons on the ends, that way they won't run and you'll make all kinds of clacking noises as you move.

take sharpies and draw pictures on them? I have a few pairs like that from an econ class...weird little quotes and drawings, signatures, etc

maybe turn them into bell bottoms? If you have an old blouse or skirt, cut up the outside seam to about the knee, then sew in a triangle of fabric

AWESOME! I like it.

my 3 year old claims that we can sew a feather boa to the seams on the sides of the overalls.....

Chimes or bells of some sort attached to the chest or thigh. Make it play music. Have a pair of marimba mallets handy.

Take about a 1/2 cup bleach and some Qtips and "draw/paint" designs on the fabric. You could make smiley faces :) or anything you like. You have to saturate the Qtip very well....cant just dab it.

okay, here is our tacky plan....

we are cutting on the seam up to the knee and making them into bell bottoms, we are sewing random fabric into the space making "ruffles"

I made an apron to hold my balloon animal supplies, and we are going to put foot prints on the pockets.

we have some feather boa type material that I am going to cover the overall straps with and we are maybe going to use buttons to line the seams that we don't cut, esp. around the pocket on the chest.

I plan to hide small bells in the ruffles on the bottom because I like the idea of being noisy when I walk.....

sound good?

Sounds great Smunk. The tackier the better,I say. I just had to go buy some threads at the Salvation Army because I got a last minute note from Rea's teacher that they have to dress up like 'Little House on the Prairie" days. They could have given me some notice. To my surprise, I found a frilly apron and a long blue and whire checked skirt......and I found some odds and ends to make a bonnet.

Everybody loves clown underwear, howzabout a half open longjohn-like flap in the back with a ruffly patch sewn in to hide whatever you wear underneath but that looks like clown bloomers?

One of the 7 chiefs of Israel?

Numbers 7:49
his offering was one silver plate whose weight was 130 shekels, one silver basin of 70 shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering;

Go for layering... cut out oddly shaped holes in unexpected places and sew weirdly textured fabrics beneath them to give the illusion of wearing wacky underclothes.

Exaggerate features.

Have pockets sewn onto the outside in a contrasting material so they are very visible. For instance: White pockets on a blue material sewn with red thread.

Giant buttons are good. A design that is oddly out of place is also effective. For example: A tuxedo-like pattern but in a bizarre color on it.

Wide stripes, especially horizontal stripes are good. :)

And, of course, blood stains. :)
