October 19th. Wow, what great day. Not sure if anybody knew this but today is the anniversary of the day that Lord Cornwallis finally surrendered to Gen. Washington at Yorktown. Had that not happened i shudder to think where the world would be today.

Not that much different, considering that Britain wouldn't have been able to hold on to colonies for much longer anyways.

His army would have been destroyed. Our army had pinned him to the sea and the French Navy defeated the British fleet and was blocking his escape by water. Cornwallis really didn't have a choice.

I imagine that had Britain managed to retain control of the colonies, some form of "responsible government" would have been given, possibly along the lines of Franklin's Albany Plan and the federal system seen in Canada.

Huh. Mine too. All I want for my birthday is a Democratic House of Congress. I'd like two, but I won't be greedy--one will be enough. :D

If you're not using that, there's a thread about Bush doing something horrible again that could muchly do with a pot of tea all round, calm people down and whatnot.

*forms Englishness into tea, which is condensed liquid Englishness, adds milk and ships it over to the other thread*

I agree, Nov. 7 is definitely more important. It also happens to be my birthday, but that's besides the point. The Englishness I could do without though.

The battle itself was inconclusive but it drove the British fleet from the Chesapeake so Cornwallis was cut off from any rescue. Counts as a victory for the French to me.

The French acheived their objective of cutting off the British troops from their fleet. I'm pretty sure that that makes it a victory. A puny victory maybe, but still a victory.

And I thought "Daddy! I want a Pony for Christmas" was the stereotypical spoiled brat demand!:p

That said - I know quite a few people who are chipping in to help you get your desired birthday present.

Oh, come now. I'm American and I don't "shudder to think where the world would be today" had we lost even such an important battle, and had we not become a separate entity from the British Empire.

Enough with all the drama about how wonderful we are and how everyone should worship the greatness of U.S.

It was SIGNED on the 4th, and on July 8th READ OUT to the people of Philadelphia, who had mixed reactions to the news.
