Is this common? If so, this is a sad world

I had nothing better to do, so I was playing Diablo 2 with my necromancer. I don't take these games that seriously, but obviously some do. This is very annoying, after all it is just a game right?
There was one guy with a high level character, he was acting better than everybody, insulting and picking on people weaker than him and accused me of all people of crying when I refused to take his insults seriously. I was ignoring him, he was picking on somebody else weaker than him...why I have no idea.
This lead me to wonder, how sad must your life be to get all high and mighty over a silly game? Must your life be devoid of all meaning and purpose that all you have going for you is a game? I find that very sad. I got to thinking, is this common place? If so, what can be done about it? I am ok with people playing video games, but you have to understand they are just a game and you need to have a life outside of it. So what can be done to deal with people centering their whole life around a game?
If this is seen as trolling....I mean how could it?

err, yeah. I did post something.
I quite playing most games online because it is pathetic how common it is. It's a freakin' game. It's supposed to be fun, in you spare time. It always bugged me when %50+ of the people playing it spent what seemed like every waking moment, just so that they could beat the tar out of casual gamers like me, and then treat me like an inferior human being because of it. [/rant]

Yeah, but that's suprisingly easy to get around. I joined a game clan a few years ago, and it was great, because we would meet up online at certain times on the weekend and practice together, and eventually set up matches against other clans. Since we got to know eachother after sticking to groups like that, there were a lot less morons to deal with and we all had a good time.
Still, I usually play singleplayer games. The current MMORPG mania affords no protection from idiots.

Annoying isn't it? How did this come about and what could be done to stop it? This doesn't make the world look good and casula gamers like me look good. But I won't let them drive me away, what can be done to stop this?

I like singleplayer games too, atleast I don't have to listen to people. Sometimes I think MMORPG encourage these things.

My brother plays a whole lot of of Final Fantasy on his PS2 online, and he has a little pumpkin headed character named after a famous sci-fi villian that has never gone on an adventure and exists soley to sell the crap that his main character makes and finds etc. He'll leave that little pumpkin head sitting as a market dude when he goes to work or bed. Sometimes he'll come back and find that people have spent up to an hour just yelling at him to move.

They're the kind of people who, were this games not available, would be picking on kids in the school ground or torturing little animals for their power fix. They are very pathetic people, simply because the most they have achieved in life is the ability to beat someone who's never played before. It's best to ignore them.
As to the OP, yes, as you can probably see, I can believe that people spend all their time doing these things. If you root around on the news websites, there are articles about the obsession people have with them, especially in the new economies of Asia. I don't blame them, really; when I was a teenager I expect I could have played them constantly as well as I used to play computer games all the time. How these people have managed to keep up such a habit into adulthood, though, is beyond me; I don't even know where they get the time.

By making money selling "items" for these games through internet stores. Because other ones of them will pay for it. Look for it, it happens a lot.

I suspect that they are on the other end of that RL scenario...

It's really annoying... I can finally afford to keep up with my gaming habit, but I no longer have the time to do so! I still have games from before last Christmas that I've not played!
You do meet the occasional irritating twonk online, and the most amusing way of dealing with them is to annihilate them utterly. Sometimes you don't have the ability, so then just ignore and avoid them as the pathetic creatures they are. Log off, have a cup of tea, then go back to it, perhaps.
Most people online are just there for a good game, and if you're gracious in defeat and magnanimous in victory then most people tend to be polite and friendly.

I find the server I play Neverwinter Nights on, because it's on a smaller scale, tends to avoid most of the idiot, twinking powergamers who want nothing more then to ruin your day.
There doesnt appear to be anything unusual about the behaviour described, sounds to me like the only difference between 'people online' and 'people', is 'online'.

halo is terrible at this
i play halo maybe a couple times a month if not a year. it is a fun game and i enjoy getting on there and just playing with some friends, but we end up playing some other peopole that take the game way to serious and make it a very crappy game to play.
i also hate games that dont have you shielded during your spawn and some bastard is always waiting by a common spawn point with a damn sniper rifle or something. i mean who the hell has any morals and spawn kills? what fucking bastards if you spawn kill it means you are not good enough to get kills on an equal playing field
