What do you think is the best national anthem ever?

My favorite is probably La Zaïroise.

Its not officially the anthem (although it should be), but 'Rule Britannia' is pretty awesome.

And if we're going historically, I think 'Dixie' has to be one of the best anthems ever composed.

The Russian National Hymn. That's an amazing song.

The Brazilian anthem (which I heard a lot back in the days of Ayrton Senna) is also very nice.

Despite my loathing of the country, whatever the Israeli one is. Also the Russian one.

Don't know about best ever, but I do like La Marseillaise.

Despite being from the United States (and thus really enjoying my own anthem) if I had to pick one that wasn't my own, I like both Englands anthem, and Canada's

Also, Communist China's sounds pretty, as far as musically.

Yes, historical anthems are acceptable. As are present ones.

The US anthem works when played as a march (which is what it is). But it's usually butchered before sporting events.

I would like Canada's anthem more if the lyrics weren't so hokey. I really think we should only ever sing it in French. It was originally written in French, and it's less dumb there.

Either that or just switch over to The Maple Leaf Forever, which actually is a good song.

marseillaise, but the soviet anthem was the most compelling.

Musically and melodically speaking, I like...

O Canada
Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika
San Min Chu-i
Kimi Ga Yo
Deşteaptă-te, române!
Advance Australia Fair
March of the Volunteers
Das Lied der Deutschen
Gosudarstvenny Gimn Rossiyskoy Federatsii
The Star-Spangled Banner
Jana Gana Mana

I'm sure theres a few more.. but those ones came to my head first.

I agree completely. To this day, it is the only song I know that I fundamentally understood without ever having heard the lyrics. I've never heard so complex an emotion relayed without even the assistance of words. To tell the truth, it seems stronger without lyric.

"Bonnie Blue Flag" is also amazing so is "Ashokan Farewell"....

*Goes to dig out the Ken Burns documentary

Most National Anthems are pretty good. I actually only have a problem with my own; and only because The Star Spangled Banner can't be played on bagpipes.
It's still a good piece, though. (Wish they'd sing more than the first verse...)

Nope. There's a key change in the middle of the first verse, and bagpipes can't do that.

This has been done before, but in my view the Russian anthem (http://www.national-anthems.net/countries/index.php?id=RS) is by far the most beautiful, stirring, call it what you will. In second place I would put the Israeli anthem (http://www.national-anthems.net/countries/index.php?id=IS).

Of course, I think La Marseillaise (http://www.national-anthems.net/countries/index.php?id=FR) is great too, but I'm biased. ;)

One of the times I played the final Allied mission of Red Alert 2, I cut out the game music, and started up Internationale as I swept down into the Kremlin with armored units. :D

The Soviet one is good. I also like the tune of "O Canada"

The French national anthem is great.

if "Finlandia" isn't the Finnish national anthem, it should be.

I like my own national anthem a lot, except that it's butchered so badly at sporting events. Also, it's hard to find a key in which it isn't somewhat hard for a lot of people to sing.

I loved the allied navy units, in that last mission, I chronosphered my aircraft carriers into the little lake near the Kremlin, and wiped out their entire power supply. The Grizzly tanks rolled right over their mobile defenses.

To whoever said this earlier, Rule Brittania is not England's national anthem, God Save the Queen is. But really Land of Hope and Glory is probably the best national tune, and it should be the anthem. O Canada is pretty mediocre, despite coming from Canada, i still find the lyrics just stupid. How can "our home and native land", compete with "land of the brave and home of the free"?

Why does it need to compete? Its just a hymn to stir up some random nationalism.

I'm just a fan of the raw numbers that the Soviets can crank out. It's probably due to the fact that I love using Zerg Rush in Starcraft or melee rush in Age of Empires. Oddly enough, I play extreme defense in Civilization 3...

Kimigayo is probably the most haunting anthem I know of (The words don't work, but that's what you get for putting a 16th century poem to music).

And yes, I do like the Star Spangled Banner, even if you can't actually sing it.

But for the absolute best... I give you, "We Can Rule You Wholesale", the anthem of Ankh-Morpork.

France's "La Marsillaise". Always makes me cry.
Also Germany's anthem. Beautiful music by Haydn.
Russia's very good, now that they're back to CCCP music.
Italy's "Fratelli d'Italia" is quite good, if played by good musician, else it sounds a bit farcical.
Switzerland and (former) Jugo are also nice.
I almost forgot DDR's!!!
