Fricken stupid me somehow got the fun ole spyware installed my 'puter. (swear I wasn't loooking at naughty sites this time). Here is a list of new process I don't normally have running:

Mrt.exe
mrtstub.exe
pmsngr.exe
isamonitor.exe
isamini.exe

I have really annoying "ballons" that keep popping up in my toolbar. Grrr..what is the best way to remove these things? I set my firewall up at high, as to block up most other popups, and i have had Microsoft's Malicious software removal tool run, and found nothing...I had Adaware run, and remove some registry keys, but i still have this stupid crap popping up in my toolbar, and the processes running. Help me please. I <3 my computer too much to let it go through this pain :p

Pour custard through your floppy disk drive, and hope it only affects areas of your hard-drive affected by spyware.

If it hasn't been found by adaware or others, then it is probably some 'legitimate' part of some software you have recentely installed, happens sometimes. MSN plus has there bunch of adaware things if you agree and deamon tools has to be installed with a bunch, a fair few others downloadable software ones do too. It's worth a check.

And to clean it out of the drive prior to use a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with slugs provides the impact necessary to shake all the custard out of the drive.

Don't be ridiculous, to get the custard out you just pour in some white spirit and then hold it fan-downwards, and eventually, it'll just sloosh out.

Takes too long. Every computer tech should carry a 12 gauge with a variety of shells. Slugs for the hard drive, BB for the motherboard, and number 3 buck if you can't figure out exactly what's wrong.

What about Alcohol 120%? It doesn't have any adware attached to it, does it?

Of course, with my new computer, I've taken every single precaution from the get go, so I've been perfectly fine and safe. Yayforme.

The two most effective ways of avoiding viruses spyware are thus:

1) Keep Windows up to date. Auto-update is your friend.
2) Don't click on anything stupid.

HijackThis (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html), if you know what you're doing, is a very useful tool for removing unwanted software, but some of it can dig in so deep you have to get busy with the NTFS-write-capable boot-disks. Or just re-install, which is quicker.

I use Ewido Antispyware which is free and can be downloaded at http://free.grisoft.com
They also make a damn good Antivirus program AVG which can be had for free at the same site.
Also for that annoying thing in the system trya try the Brute Force Uninstaller.
You can get it free at Major Geeks (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Brute_Force_Uninstaller_BFU_d4714.html)

If you need any help with any of the above programs let me know.

A good resource for eliminating spyware is spywareinfo.com (http://www.spywareinfo.com/)
They have a great forum where you can get help eliminating the worst spyware infections.

Just be careful not to download random "spyware removal" software, because some of it installs spyware. Stick to the ones you've seen real people recommend to you. I've heard good things about Spybot Search&Destroy, and AdAware is what I've usually used.

get AVG it is the best

AVG while a lukewarm product is an anti virus ... and they really have not added any powerfull features for spyware

I personaly when working on students computers use a combination

Spybot/Addaware/Hijack this ... with a possible euido if that does not get it.

If thoes do not get it (rare) I am usualy digging it out by hand anyways at that point (or before that point)

I never solved my spyware program until I wiped my computer. So I doubt any advice I could give you would be helpful.

Spybot Search and Destroy was utterly useless; it would catch stuff, delete about half of it, tell me to restart my computer, then fail to delete half the stuff again. Then it would catch more the next time.

No, no, no.

Search the ebay for Mac Edition Graphics cards. Then build a PC and download a revised pre-release of OS X Lepord.

Why run a mac when you can run a *nix distro with xgl/compiz

Not only do I find it a superior gui it also has every utility I need without the slow ass ports

So? :)

Lol you are just as nerdy as me :) (well maybe lol)

But in the end if you stick to staying away from the ultra far end gui enhancements and just stick with a gnome distro of ubuntu ... its easier then windows initialy to setup

And about as easy as learning the MAC layout to a new beginer really

Their apt-get and gui packet managers are cake to learn on the fly and install just about anything under the sun

... If I only had the time

Only projects I have had a hand on are back end non gui network related applciations (I worked on a cygwin port for ns2 all in one, and had a hand in some changes for tcpstat)

But with finishing my masters I have not been able to spend the time coding like I used to

I plan on trying Fedora, and if/when if phails, I'm going with openSUSE remastered.

Fedora is a hog if you are coming from something like even SUSE ... comming from FreeBSD even ubuntu is a bloated hog and it aint that bad

Though my full FreeBSD install without user data is like 300 meg lol MAYBE

I have a 5GB FAT partition (for backing up and transfers to Win). I can fit everything that is in my / and /boot without having to deat what is already in there. EDIT: there was a point. O yeah. I don't have much stuff. Bloat isnt an issue. The fact you cannot use XFS for / is.

Besides, I am at a dead end with Ubuntu. Edgy Kernels simply want boot. I've updated my BIOS. Tried a bunch of boot options. No luck. And I need something to entertain me while waiting for the DVD version of openSUSE remastered.

And will probably stay that way. Since Macs have a really small market share on both the Desktop and the Server(FY, Macs make horrid servers) markets. This results in a quite low probability of your Mac interacting with a computer with that virus as the rate of multiplication will be quite low as the virus will be dormant on non-Mac platforms.

I use spybot, adaware, spywareguard, and something else that I cant find the icon for but is good. and Kaspersky antivirus. youd be surprised how many network attacks I get every day, just through messenger and stuff.

Also use firefox.

And the best way, of course, is to google the name of the spyware, find the company that makes it, find their CEO, get his address, and go round to his house and hit him in the face with a claw hammer. then burn down the house and his offices. that should stop it for a bit.
