Bush=Chessmaster?

No one expects the White House Press Secretary to be fair and open--he or she is a spinner, plain and simple, and the job is one that requires not giving answers as often as giving them. Ari Fleischer was one of the best at not giving information and in fact lying that I've ever seen, while McClellan always seemed in over his head.

But Tony Snow is another animal altogether. (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/16/us/politics/16snow.html?_r=2&hp&ex=1160971200&en=2be77d6bb2fdf3d6&ei=5094&partner=homepage&oref=slogin&oref=slogin) The article is about how he's as much a political operative as press seecretary, which is unusual. Generally, press secretaries stay out of the political side of things, in order to maintain the sheen or veneer of respectability in their relationship with the press. In this White House, that's gone, which isn't surprising, since politics trumps everything else.

But here's the bit that gave me the title for this thread. Here was Mr. Snow on working in the White House: “The most exciting, intellectually aerobic job I’m ever going to have.” On the nature of the American soul after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11: “There is an ember of greatness burning in every heart.” On the intellectual acumen of his boss: “He reminds me of one of those guys at the gym who plays about 40 chessboards at once.”

I don't know what's funnier: the idea that Bush is capable of playing 40 chess games at once, or the idea that he'd be doing it at the gym. I'm not exactly what you'd call a gym rat, but I've never seen chessboards set up next to the Nautilus machines.

The idea of Bush being able to play one game of chess, let alone 40, is a bit of a stretch.
He'd probably keep trying to 'king' his pieces.

It's not enough that you have to go after Bush ad nauseam? You have to go after the administration's press secretary? Truly pathetic.

hey *I* could play 40 games of chess at one time. i'd lose every last one of them but i could play them!

maybe snow was implying that if the field was weak enough bush could win a significant number of games. im thinking not.

the fact that Snow is previously from FOX speaks volumes about how FOX employers view the Bush admin.
It also doesn't really say much for FOX if spouting unsubstantiated propoganda bs is the most intellectually challenging (sorry - the most "intellectually aerobic"*) job he's ever done.

*wtf does this mean? Considering aerobic literally means with air, is Snow actually admitting that he's an airhead?
Finally, some truth from the White House press!

Bush does have to concurrently manage various crises -- he may have to deal with 40 issues simultaneously. People don't give him enough credit for his intelligence, but he is a wise man. He recognizes many problems facing us, and is forced to make decisions based on scant summaries quite quickly while fending off the press which bites at his ankles. I wouldn't be surprised if Bush turned out to be a chess grandmaster -- maybe not a modern Kasparov or Capablanca, but high up there. He has highly refined analytical skills which he uses to incisive effect to make crystal-clear decisions about foreign (and domestic, for that matter) affairs.

In case you haven't noticed, Bush isn't doing all that well at your fine-tuned balancing act.

A monkey could do better then him, because a monkey wouldn't do anything except shit in the oval office.
Whereas, of course, Bush is shitting on TWO (three?) ENTIRE COUNTRYS at the same time. Excretory genius, but not much else.

Snow didn't mean a gym, as in a place where people go to work out. He meant a gym, short for gymnasium (like the huge, smelly old room with wrestling mats stacked in one corner and squeaky hardwood for a floor that you had in your high school), where, when I was in high school, I would go on Saturday mornings for chess tournaments. At these tournaments, some people would play more than one match at once (never saw anybody play 40 at once, but...)

So enough cracks about "chess boxing" and things like that. A big, wide open hall with terrible acoustics, not 24-Hour Fitness.

"Kinging" a piece in chess isn't so far-fetched. If you advance a pawn all the way to the end of the board, you can transform it into any piece you want (yeah, yeah, I know--except a king). Some people (who aren't well initiated in chess) call this process "kinging." One could be forgiven for thinking that such a thing was possible.
