Sid Meier's Pirates!

Not GOLD, not the recent 3-d version, the original.

I don't play it anymore, because my computer can't make it work with sound. That is to say the software's audio architecture was designed for primitive computers only and it just doesnt work with anything modern, though the rest of the game does. And the sound was super-awesome.

There are a lot of semi-old games like Starcraft, Warcraft II and Age of Empires I and II that I really like, and wish the sequels would just upgrade these old games to make better use of modern computers instead of trying to come up with new shit. Take Starcraft, for example, but add new resolutions possible, remove the unit caps. Or the first Age of Empires, except with the garrison and farm-management goodies from Age of Empires II.

I tried to play the old SSI game Roadwar 2000 awhile back. I loved that game when I was a teenager. But the Apple emulator didn't work right or something. I couldn't use most of the games functions and controls. I was so pissed.

I had some of the old text adventures that were popular when I as in junior high can't find them, so I cannot play them anymore..... sniff sniff. :(

I think I have a win95 version of DOOM around here somewhere. But my copy of Quake 2 still works on my current system!

Civ II. Better than Civ I or III, imo.

Though I finally got round to getting a copy of Civ IV, and....Damn you, Sid Meier! Damn you to Hell! You've just sucked all my spare time out of my life!

I also enjoyed Populace - the original. Nice quirky game there. Doubt it'd run on my pc now. I remember when I have a Pentium I 100, I had to have it on the slowest setting possible - otherwise it just went crazy.

lots.

Win95 Doom is old? :p Bleh. I have the DOS version.

The oldest game that I have and still play regularly is probably F-19 Stealth Fighter, from 1989.

Good game. Dosbox will run it perfectly. http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/

Or you could try emulating a console version of it, which might be easier...i'd recommend the Sega Genesis version.

I still play the Quest for Glory games from time to time. I never got a copy of Quest for Glory V, though I did try the demo. Demo sucked. Also, I am annoyed that the glitch in IV involving the Bone ceremony scroll was never fixed, meaning you'd never be able to complete the game with your own character. Pissed me off time after time.

My parents still have a computer standing somewhere (not in use though) from around 1986, i tried starting it up a few years ago but the screen didn't work , the rest does, but the screens totally different from the ones we have now so couldn't really do anything. That computer had some great games though, even if they were in black & white (well, with a sort of greenish glow to everything)

Heroes of Might and Magic III..."Tower" castle type was my favorite, specifically, although I have long since learned the pros and cons of each type.

Many, MANY hours wasted on that one. :)

Heroes of Might and Magic IIISigh. I miss my copies of Clouds of Xeen and Darkside of Xeen. Saved up my money for months to buy Darkside the day it came out.

Old games? Well, for awhile I had Wasteland and Bard's Tale I, II, III. Man... those old EA games were fun. However, if we're really going old, I still have Yar's Revenge.

...and the Atari 2600 to play it on :p

Thinking back, it amazes me one could actually find books with DIY games for the ZX81. Not that I'd recommend them. There has to be more interesting ways of killing time. Bashing your skull in with a hammer, for example.

Day of the tentacles anyone?
:D :D :D I loved that game! Still do, actually. I wish LucasArts would make more like that. Grim Fandango was a good game, but nowhere near DoTT, Sam & Max, and the first 3 Monkey Island games.

I had a game called the New Zealand Story on the Amiga when I was a kid. Not played it in over 10 years now, but I can still remember nearly everything about it. Including there not being any save option at all. Took about 5 hours to complete, and if you died it was back to the start.

There was a text adventure called Humbug that I used to love as well. It's about 18 years old now, but I still find it funny. Never completed it, and I swear it's impossible to do so.

Civilization 1-2 same way, I don't like new Civs, sticking to the old ones.
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, Civ in space, very cool game.
Tie Fighter (1995) is also one of those I can't give up. I go out and blast some hippie rebel scum every once in a while.

I went crazy for screenshots at first but when I started playing I got bored despite my effort to like the game. Graphics look good but maps are dull, clicking right spot is a problem, combat sucks not fun at all, castle looks fine but base building has become dull. I liked spending time at my castle listening to Homam2 musics and looking at scenery, in this game I don't.
I checked Nival Int. is Russian but I still hate french and blame them for Homam5! :p

8-bit Nintento:

River City Ransom
Legend of Zelda

Super Nintendo:

Final Fantasy III (VI japan)

PC:

Master of Orion
Master of Orion II
Master of Magic

and I'm not sure if Starcraft is old enough to be considered an 'old game'.

Sure these games are short on graphics, but they are still very entertaining. Seems like all the more modern games are trying to appeal to the ailing attention span of todays youth with lots of flashy graphics and instant gratification. Whereas the older games had to make their money on game play (ie how much fun they were to play).

I'm starting to feel like an old man talking about the 'good ol days'. heh :p

Master of Orion 2 has to be in the top... ooh, two games ever, I recon. Nobody's done it better yet.

I don't play many really old games (not enough time :( ) but I keep meaning to dig Fragile Allegiance (only 1997, apparently) out, and I played a remake of Elite up to Deadly recently (and did the secret missions - after looking at the source code to find out how to get them ;) ). I have Lemmings on two sorts of floppies and F15 Strike Eagle 2 kicking around somewhere, too, as well as all the Megadrive Sonic games in a big collection.

I had a games compendium with Carrier Command in it once, but we had to send it back because most of them wouldn't work on our 8088 :(

The remake of Settlers II might be cool. In fact I'm tempted to get a Nintendo DS just so I can play Settlers on it.

The 2nd was meh, though.
And I bought the latest version this year, but they'd gone way overboard in tech and fiddliness. It just didn't have the same 'feel' as the original. Too much frustration, and not enough success.

As someone else here mentioned: Day of the Tentacle - awesome game. Might have a look round for it...

Also Diablo - it was the reason I finally installed Win95 on my pc.

I'm not familiar with this Tiger Woods game... I always found the idea of 'virtual' golf kind of strange anyway - it's that part of my brain that never understood watching sports either. You play sports - that's where the 'fun' is. (Well, to me, anyhow).

Betrayal at Krondor was, to me, one of those 'almost' games.
It was almost a great game, except it was let down with a very basic, very exploitable bug: You could take as long as you wanted to finish each chapter.
This meant you could (and I did) wander around almost the entire countryside in Chapter One, killing everything, finding loot and raising your stats. And of course each chapter had regen.
You could also, if you so inclined, spend time practising and getting their stats to max. I did this with stealth by wearing some boots that gave me high stealth. Then I snuck back and forth past some sentries. Every 3 or 4 goes my natural stealth would go up. After a while, I'd take the boots off and my stealth would be high enough to go thru it all again without the boots. Not long and I'd have 100% stealth.
Did the same for lockpicking, too.
If you did all this, by half-way thru the game the battles were a joke. The Mage, Owyn, was doing more damage just with his staff than anyone else!
Come the final battle, it was over in a couple of rounds: Owyn fires a bolt that damn near kills the evil guy and then smacks him one. The End.

Shame really, cause it could have been an awesome game. All they had to do was have time limits on each chapter.

Yes, I know: I could have played it as if there was a time limit, but the temptation not to is too damn hard to resist!

You can find download copies of it. Sierra released it as freeware way back in '97 when they launched the final chapter in the series. So it's not pirating any more.

Yeah. And then while fleeing from an undead vault, your heavily wounded level 38 character falls into a pit and breaks his neck.

:(

Hey, at least it isn't as dumb as letting Strength Of Atlas/Lordly Might run out when you are already Strained! or breaking your leg by kicking a wall whilst looking for secret doors when your strength has been reduced to 2 by a =oWeakness.

Done them both.

Thankfully I have avoided the 'death by exploding frog' ending.

5 was...ehh.

It was a conclusion to the story arc, that's all I can say. You settle down, become king, get married, and finally, FINALLY, fight a dragon.

Betrayal at Krondor was, to me, one of those 'almost' games.

There are a ton of games like that, once you learn how it's done you can make it so incredibly easy. FFVII for instance, since everyone knows it, you can get so freakin powerful so easily that everything in the story line is an absolute joke. One shotting the last boss. Oblivion, you can beat the main quest at level 2, and you're better off doing so. If you're smart you can polish off every single quest without hitting level 3 and it'll be easy as pie.

Ah, yes. Not in the old days, I came upon that like two or three years ago. Great game!

Good game. Dosbox will run it perfectly. http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/

Or you could try emulating a console version of it, which might be easier...i'd recommend the Sega Genesis version.

I do have an NES emulated version, but its not the same. The music is totally different, and it's magically easier.

I'll try the DOS version, but I bet it didnt have the same music that the Mac version had. I mean this was back in the day when Macs were better gaming machines than DOS.

Star Control 3 is shit, due to the original designers not having a say in the plotline or anything. Meh, shit is probably too harsh. It wasn't that bad, just mediocre.

There *might* be a SC4 written by the original developers coming out sometime in the near future though, and they'll probably do a "It was all a dream" trick, or something.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Zelda: A Link to the Past and the lovely OLD Zeldas... all excellent fun. Unfortunately, they've nerfed the new ones.

Playing Wild Arms for the PS currently.

Sim City 2000

Wolfenstein 3D. (Doom 95 nothin'...)

The Monkey Island games - as well as Grim Fandango. Unfortuantely, I can't get an emulator to run those.

I need game help people. I have know idea what game this is but I am hoping that someone on here must know what I am talking about.

All I can tell you is that it's on the Atari St and is a platformer. One of the levels is really bouncy and you just bounce around to the end of the level. I think that was the second level. In the first level I think you were able to turn into paper aroplanes but I am not sure because I was so young it may have just been a that you jump on. I think the first level was made from chocolate or something however that could also be BS as I was 3 at the time and don't remember much. I can't remember what the character you look like was, though I think he may have been brown.

Plus, I recently discovered a copy of the original CRPG, Oubliette. Written for the University of Illinois PLATO mainframe in 1977, it was ported to DOS in 1982. It has to run from a floppy drive, and it automatically saves your progress as you play so there's no reloading if you die.

First time I've heard of somebody else playing MoM. What a great game! There are so many totally different ways to beat it...
