I'd like to lose some weight, while using little effort.

What are some things I should change in my life? Drink less milk? Have a strict deit? Only eat 3 times a day? Get the fat sucked out?

What are fast ways to lose weight?

don't look for the fast change. The things that will give you fast results are either not safe, not permenant, or a combo of both.

Change your diet. Reduce fat, calories, sugars, and oils. Cut out fast food. Eat lean cuts of meat. Have an apple as a snack instead of a cookie. Drink plenty of water. Eat breakfast (it kicks up your metabolism). be conscious of what you are eating. Eat when you are hungry, stop when you are full (yeah, it sounds stupid, but most of us have trained ourselves to ignore the signs that we aren't hungry anymore, and keep eating). Instead of eating immediatly, have some water. It will appease you for a while.

Exercise. Aerobic will be the biggest benefit...run, bike, play a sport...anything for 20 minutes or more. Weight training will help you too. You want to build more muscle, which will increase your base metabolism (in other words, by just sitting there, you will burn more energy).

Just remember...the idea isn't to starve yourself. If you want results, you have to make long term changes. It will take about a month to see any change, and probably 4-6 before they are really noticeable.

There is no fast way, but small changes can help.

1) Drink water. Lots of it.
2) Drink only a bit of juice. They're loaded with sugar. (4oz a day?)
3) Lowfat milk. 1% and 2% tastes good and cuts down on the calories.
4) Eat salad. Lots of fiber to make you feel full, and mostly water and cellulose.
5) Eat veggies (not just potatoes).
6) Eat several small meals a day. Example: egg, toast and juice for breakfast, yogurt for snack, half a sandwich and veggie soup for lunch, fruit for snack, dinner.
7) MOVE. Take a walk every day for 15 minute - 30 minutes. Work up to longer walks.
8) Cut out sodas, even diet ones. Or radically reduce how much you drink.
9) Snack on crunchy veggies and no-fat ranch dressing.
10) Reward yourself with a small piece of a VERY good dessert every so often. Don't deprive yourself or you'll fall off changing your eating habits (every so often is not every day.) ;)

The How is pretty obvious: Eat less and more healthily - choose a low-fat option, don't have extra food sitting around the house (maybe making a plan for the week and only buy what you will use). And secondly, do a few runs around the block. It's hard the first few times, but it'll get easier with time, and it burns the calories (plus it's cheaper than a gym).

It's the actually doing it that's the hard part.

I'm going to pretend you said healthy and safe, not fast. Here's what I do to keep my weight in good condition:
-excercise. I prefer walking, running, and pilates, but you have to choose your own favourite form. It's not in any way useful to force yourself into something you hate, so find a sport or something that you like.
-limit my junk food. I let myself eat junk, but I have a specific amount of junk I'm allowed to eat each day. I have to make sure I pay close attention to what I eat. Therefore, I can eat chips, but I have to eat one single bowl, no refills. Carrying around a bag of chips is baaaad. My wannabe nutritionist friend says, don't snack on junk while doing other stuff, 'cause you lose focus on your intake.

what sarkhan said.

as a man, all you really have to do is STOP EATING CRAP and get some more exercise.

if you want to put some effort in, keep a food diary--writing down everything you eat-- for a few days then calculate how many calories you are consuming. it will shock you

then cut out the stupid foods, the sugar drinks, the candies, the deep fried foods, and the chips. stop putting butter/margarine on things. eat more vegetables and fruits.

dont go hungry

start taking long walks, its good for your head as well as your body. if you have a sport you like to participate it, go for it.

youll feel great and youll never have to be deprived of anything but stuff you shouldnt eat anyway

if you want it to be FAST, it will take some hardship. but thats a different question eh?

- eat breakfast as soon as possible after getting up (will activate your metabolism, not to mention make you feel more energetic during the day), don't eat before you go to sleep (just grows more fat and makes it harder to eat breakfast in the morning)
- eat smaller meals, big meals make your stomach expand so it takes more food to get the "filled" feeling, you can eat more meals a day this way, just keep them small
- eat healthy (try to use less fat/sugar):
- low fat meat or just fish (btw, you only need about your bodyweight/1000 in proteins each day)
- complex carbohydrates (bread, potatoes) instead of shorter ones (sugar)
- vegetables (they tend to be low on calories), seriously, try to have no meals without vegetables or fruit
- drink a lot of water
- if you don't do it already, try to cook your own meals
- these are changes in lifestyle, permanently, you won't instantly lose a lot of weight, but you'll just go to a lower weight permanently

of course you can always go all unhealthy and just ignore one food group or get food poisoning, both tend to make you lose weight really fast

Sarkhaan speaks the truth.

The way to do it is to make deals with yourself.

If you're too spineless to stick to a diet, consider going vegan. It's fairly difficult to get fat as a vegan, even if you're trying.

Buy a bike & join a swimming team. Make it a rule to take the bike to your swim lessons.

When you've done that for a month or two, take up boxing. Nothing will make you loose weight faster than boxing, an unlike some shitty uninspiring gym, boxing has practical applications & is a major adrenalin kick.

A good friend of mine lost 60 pounds, gained some nice muscle & learned to have a little faith in himself by doing the above. It took him about a year & here 5 years later, he looks better & is more energetic than he's ever been.

As an unashamed foodie/glutton, I've always focused more on the exercise part. I cut down how MUCH of the unhealthy crap I was eating, but I still eat pizza, chips, burgers etc often and I'm still losing weight.

I walk, a lot, if you're especially heavy you'll burn off more calories than a regular-sized person, even an hour a day of walking is a start, especially if you've been living a sedentary life of sitting at the computer a lot (as I used to). But I wouldn';t recomend fasting or quick fixes, I've tried fasting before and it never worked for me, I always ended up binge munching after I stopped fasting to make up for lost time, so to say.

What are fast ways to lose weight?I'd advice against fast ways. You'd be better off with something slow that lasts, then start yoyoing up and down in weight. You'll have to make lasting changes to your living pattern; so pick something you can live with.

What are some things I should change in my life? Drink less milk? Have a strict deit? Only eat 3 times a day? Get the fat sucked out?Well, the easily said thing is excercise more, eat less. Which isn't all that helpfull as you probably figured that already.
Switching to only three meals a day might help, but you have to make sure you don't compensate by eating more in those three meals. And if you substitute some foods for 'light' variants, don't fall in the trap that you could eat more of it because it's light.
To get some extra excercise, you can avoid using a car on short distances, and not use elevators for anything less than say 5 floors (of course walking more is always ok, but it's best to set targets you can stick to; rather thanget discouraged and give up after a while).

15-10-2006, 23:19
You definitely don't want to starve yourself. That'll just put your body into a "starvation mode", in which your body will just store everything in case you won't be getting another meal for a while, and when you do eat it's all kept for the same reason - just a survival trait of humanity. That's why eating regularly is very important, so the body adjusts to a set pattern.

I'd love to suggest this (as I'm vegan myself), but I've known people who are vegan, who don't actually care about what they eat, and I'm surprised they're still living. Unfortunately, it's now possible to eat a junky vegan diet.

Doing it the healthy way, on the other hand, would be a great idea.

I have breakfast and dinner, and occasional some one or two snack-moment. But really, I just do it to keep my teeth clean (I'm now compelled to eat gum after each meal/snack, and I can't be bothered to do that more than 2-4 times a day; that much gum just wouldn't be healthy).

that actually seems really good. Something like eggs would be good for breakfast, and are pretty fast and easy too.
the walks will really make a good difference.
you might find that you need a snack after dinner, esp. as you do more exercise. When you're hungry, eat something...just make it healthy. In general, one serving is about one handful worth, and you can figure that for about 100 calories (it balances out over the course of a day)

popcorn is also a great snack if you pick and choose what you put on it. Instead of butter, pour on a little olive oil and italian seasoning, or try cajun or ranch seasoning.

Fast weight loss is never good.

Go slow so it will stick.

Start with no processed sugar. If you want sweet, eat fruit.

Then when you get used to that, cut all highly processed food. Eat fresh meats, fresh milks, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables. Avoid anything precooked.

Third, work on cutting down on fats. Check out cooking methods like broiling and steaming.

Make sure you study herbs and spices to add flavor without sugar or fats.

Very good. A few thoughts:

Apple is better than coffee at waking you up in the morning. And healthier!

Try chicken instead of ham - make sure the skin's removed (~90% of chicken fat is just under the skin). See if there's a low fat cheese you can have.

Eat more fruit as snacks instead of bars. Even apparently 'healthy' bars can be full of refined carbs, sodium and fat. Nuts are very high in fat, btw.

tip for small dinner - put it in a small bowl/plate. Sounds silly, but it works.
Researchers gave two groups of people the same food amount - one overflowing in a small bowl, the other sitting in the middle of a large bowl. 1st group generally declared themselves full afterwards, 2nd group complained about still being hungry.
What you see influences how full you feel. Also, using a big bowl 'encourages' you to fill it (so you end up eating more, as we've all been brought up with the idea of cleaning our plates). Eat slowly as well - the act of eating also sends a signal to your brain that you're full. Wolf down the food, and the signal's not sent - hence the snacking a few minutes after eating.

Don't deny yourself a treat now and then, otherwise it'll be easier to cave into to temptation. Use as motivation. Set yourself a target for the week and reward yourself with a unhealthy food you like if you achieve it.

Walking's good, but try doing some pushups in your bedroom. Check online, there's heaps of exercise you can do around the home. Even little things like getting rid of the TV remote.

So, popcorn really IS a good snack? Hah! I knew it.

I'm eager to follow many of these tips as well. The problem I personally have is keeping interest in the exercise. For a short while, a few months back, I took a forty minute walk around the neighborhood every morning, but stopped after just a few days, using the first excuse possible to avoid doing it one day, which halted me completely thereafter. Since then, it's been immensly difficult to get me back to doing anything again. I just sit here at the computer all day.

So how do I keep my interest up? And, on that note, do any of you have online stores for bike recommendations? Ones that hopefully deliver pre-assembled, as I cannot assemble stuff worth my life.

too 1000 Cal / day...

you get to eat 5 times a day so you don't starve

italian-style breakfast (NO eggs! just 4 toast and coffee)
1 fruit around 10 a.m (fruit must always be eaten out of main meals)
at lunch, green vegetables and fish or meat, the simpler it is cooked the better, some bread
around 4 p.m, guess what, a fruit
at dinner, rice, pasta or soup, and a small piece of cheese
variate with beans, eggs or ham instead of meat. no more than 1 egg/week.
no fried foods. no butter. use only 2 teaspoon of olive oil a day - that's all.
no salami no bacon.
drink only water. just plain water. no beer no wine no alcohol no soda, fruit juice are ok only if they aren't added with extra sugar. tea and coffee are ok, but watch it with the sugar.

then walk. walk at least 1 hour a day. and at fast pace too, and mind you don't stop every 10 steps. if you can swim, swimming is ok. also bicycle.
anaerobic sports are ruled out. no fast runs. no sauna - too risky for your heart if you're too overweight.

Whatever you do, DO NOT "go on a diet."

If you go on a diet, the unspoken assumption is that you will eventually go off the diet. The moment you do, you'll be back right where you started (and possibly worse off).

Instead, make changes in your diet which you can maintain comfortably. Reduce portions a little bit, but not enough so that you're still ravenous after every meal. Swap in some healthier alternative foods when you can, but don't try to deprive yourself of all carbs or all fats or all sugars right off the bat.

Frankly, the "fast" ways to lose weight are the worst ones. They're the ways that are least likely to work in the long term, and they're also the ways that are most likely to result in long term health problems for you. Starving yourself or eating a very unbalanced diet can lead to all manner of nutritional problems and metabolism issues. Yes, you'll lose weight fast, but you'll never be able to eat normally ever again, and you'll probably die 10 years younger than you would have. Not worth it.

Get a cold. I did a few weeks back, and completely lost my appetite. In 4 days I lost 6 pounds.

Or, if you want a vaguely healthy option - only eat things that you have killed/grown yourself. After all the pets down your street have gone missing you'll be forced to go and hunt to actually eat. You'll starve for a bit (and so lose weight), but then you'll actually have learnt to hunt. And the chicks dig that! ;)

Or eat sensibly and exercise. It's amazing what that does.

Well I am.

I'd like to lose some weight, while using little effort.

What are some things I should change in my life? Drink less milk? Have a strict deit? Only eat 3 times a day? Get the fat sucked out?

What are fast ways to lose weight?
I am currently on a meal replacement diet where I replace breakfast and dinner with a shake. I don't exercise, and I'm effectively losing weight. If you do that, look to lose 2-3 lbs a week, at most. I've lost 25 lbs so far (which tells you I've been on it for 2 months), and it's easy, especially as I don't like to cook.

Getting fat sucked out is surgery, and would be a LOT of effort, simply in recovery. Exercise sucks. Having a strict diet sucks. I can't recommend the diet shakes enough, but be sure to look for ones without sugar, or caffeine supplements.

Here's the product I'm using: Shapeworks from Herbalife (http://www.herbalife.com/hl/templates/templatepreportal/herbalife/products/display.do?itemId=c_subcat_wl_programs), though there are plenty of other good products out there. I chose shakes instead of bars because with shakes you can add fruit and get 2 to 2 1/2 cups worth of a meal, as opposed to one bar. It seems more, and that works.

I made some basic changes to my diet, but it's not a strict diet or a diet of deprivation. Basic changes are:
- avoid processed foods; eat only whole foods
- cook for yourself, rather than eating out
- eat fish as the main meat in a meal 3-4 times a week
- switched from cow's milk to soy milk (unsweetened)
- don't be afraid of fat
- cut out sugar

That last one was the hardest, because the other changes actually introduced *more* foods into my diet, rather than taking any away. I do still have a sugared thing once in a blue moon (never say "no" to birthday cake). The second last one is important: don't avoid fatty foods simply because of all the hype about fat in the last decades. If you are eating whole foods, then fat isn't going to be a problem; just forget about it.

"Whole foods, not processed" means: cooked grains instead of breads; nuts instead of peanut butter; meat that's not coated with flour (in fact, avoid flour altogether for the time you're losing weight); brown rice instead of white; etc. Also avoid fermented foods, cheese, yogurt, or mushrooms, or anything that contains yeast or mold --save that for after you've lost weight. These are good foods, but they are predigested by bacteria and you want to encourage your body to do its own digesting.

Soy milk has as much nutrient as cow's milk, but because you're eating vegetable instead of animal byproduct you're getting more phytonutrients and fewer antibiotics, hormones, fat, cholesterol, and excess protein in your diet, which may reduce the risk of cancer.

You can eat as much fish as you like, even as a snack.

Avoid anything that claims to boost your energy level: sugar, booze, caffeine, Red Bull. If you're getting energy from these things, then you're not outputting your own energy. Basically, you want to rekindle the fire inside that burns energy, and hence fat cells (increase metabolism).

Other than that, it's easy. There's no counting calories, no counting portions. Just a cup and a half of milk blended with a cup of fruit and shake mix for breakfast and dinner, and a normal sized lunch. Fibre supplement and water are musts. Also, two or three snacks a day of about 200 calories or less. Popcorn makes a great snack --whole grain and not fattening, and has fibre.

Stop eating. Every time you feel hungry, masturbate. You'll lose plenty of weight. You'll probably die too. But then you'll lose even more!

Ones that hopefully deliver pre-assembled, as I cannot assemble stuff worth my life.
yep...it's a great food...filling, and, by itself, no fat, sodium, etc.

I have the same kinda problem with motivation some times...right now, I'm convincing myself that I need to go to the gym today and not skip out on it.

What I've personally found is that you need to enjoy what you're doing. I used to hate going to the gym because I got bored. But now, I've found that I enjoy it because I get to listen to a bunch of music and play games against myself.

Maybe find a friend to exercise with you? Or try changing the path that you walk every day?

For the first month, don't miss a day. You need to establish the routine. Just keep pushing yourself to go and do it.

And make sure you enjoy it. Yes, I know, exercise sucks. But it really doesn't have to.

Take up a sport or martial art that you really like and practice it often. Hitting the weight room every other day doesn't hurt. You will lose fat and build muscle. Muscle helps burn fat so weight lifting accellerates fat loss. Also when I had to cut weight I used a modified version of the zone diet. Books on it are probably available in your local library, plus there is a good zone cookbook available.

e3xercise definitely does not suck. It's by far the best, most effective way to lose weight. Fat doesn't use calories. Muscle does. Build up your muscle mass, and you're burning extra calories 24/7.
Also, if you do lose a lot of weight, exercise helps firm up the body so you don't have flabby excess skin flopping about.

So just go for a walk, ya lazy sod!

(also, take the stairs instead of the esculator/lift next time)

Well, that would be a matter of opinion. ;-)

Exercise certainly does suck when your body hurts from toxicity and muscle joint pain.

But yes, it is an effective way to lose weight.

popcorn's good (as long as it's not drenched in butter and salt), but other snacky things like carrots or celery are better. esp celery as it's apparently 'negative' calories.
Going for a walk's good - have you considered getting a dog? That forces you to go for a walk every day (usually twice).
Bikes are great. Plan a route out is best - especially one that goes in a big loop away from your home. That way, if you get 1/2 way and want to give up, turn round and go home, you'll still end up doing the same distance!
If you do get a bike, get a speedo and keep track of - and beat - your times. It's a great motivator to have a goal to beat.

But that's what so great about it!
Waking up stiff and sore all over, barely able to move one's arms.
Just fantastic feeling. It means you've done something good to your body.

1. Eat better food. You don't have to follow some book or strict regimen. Think about it, you already know what better food is. Instead of McDonald's, eat some fruit for a snack. If you need some meat go to the store and buy some chicken breat or a lean steak or - best - some halibut or salmon ro some other fish. But if you don't like fish then chicken or turkey or lean steak - not hot dogs or baloney. If you must have fast food because of time constraints o whatever, try mexican fast food like Taco Bell or Dell Taco or a wrap from Subway or something like that. Cut down on the bread and forget pasta all together.

2. Buy a bicyle. When you're hungry ride it to the store to get your food. When you're bored ride it to the park or to the movie theater. Find a sport you like and play it. I just hung out this weekend with this chick from Vancouver who is into dragon boating. Never met someone into that before. Anyways, hoops, hockey, soccer, whatever. Roller skate.

Sorry. No shortcuts - but I think you'll like your life better if you get out, eat better - that kind of thing. Plus, if you do it this way you'll always look and feel better. If you do it the fast way you'll drop a bunch of weight and put it all right back on.

Become vegetarian - it aint that difficult ( see http://www.vegsoc.org ) and you'll soon start losing weight, unless you just eat veggie junk food like veggie chocolate and crisps and stuff

Leave any meat you're going to eat out in the sun all day before consuming it.

Apart from that get yourself checked for food intolerances. If you're eating a load of stuff which don't quite agree with your body, for whatever reason, then your body don't know what to do with it and so stores it - it doesn't reject it.

Most frequent cause seems to be wheat realated and anything containing that even if not obvious. You can usually get checked at a health food stores and after that just miss out one thing at a time to see what makes the most difference to you.

I'm not saying this cos I'm a health freak - far from it. I seem to live on a diet of eggs & bacon etc and chocolate and still only weigh 11 stone. I do however spend a lot of time dancing to jazz and swing music which may help me stay slim and I only ever drink black coffee which has got SFA calories - only have milk in chocolate blancmange - go figure !

I wish you well anyway. :)

Eat well and excercise. Everyone's saying it. Apparently a good number of them do it. Just get off your butt and do it.

I'm a cow today too. Not that I'm at all fat, but my daughter announced today that I was the mommy cow, and she was the baby cow, and I was to crawl around in the "meadow" carpet and moo. Oh, and she wanted mommy-milk, which I think is why she wanted to be cows. *mooooooooo*

As previous people already mentioned, do it with other people. It's always easier to keep up if you're not alone. Unless you're an overenergetic freak like me :D. And even I keep up more stuff if I can do it with other people. It makes it more than just exercise, it's social contact too.

Ok, so I'm trying to think up things to start doing.

Have a bagel and coffee every morning.
Better lunch, no chips or soft pretzles-- just a nice ham & cheese hoagie.
When I get home from school I'll take walks on the trail behind my house.
Perhaps a granola bar..
Small dinner.

Howsat?

Sounds good. Make sure to drink a few glasses of water a day too.
