At least you have the choice. When I moved to this town it took me 3 months to even get my job at KFC, and that's only because I worked at a KFC in high school. Unemployment in my state was 7.1% in August, and it's going to be a lot worse in the winter because the tourist season is over.

I should mention that my brother works with me, so it's like making $16 an hour, really.

Now, if I lived on my own and had an apartment, I'd have to work at thirty hours a week at the very least, making $10 an hour at the local supermarket (that's their starting wage, actually, and they can guarantee 40 hour workweeks if you want them).

That's $1,200 a month (could make $1,200 a month after taxes if a few night shifts are taken each week or so). The cheapest apartment in town is $509 a month (not a bad place either, and it's just behind the supermarket, so no car is necessary), and I'm pretty sure utilities are included.

So, I'd have to pay for rent and food, and that's already about $800. Then there's cable TV and internet, which is $120 when both are combined, so there's $920. $180 would be used for random spending money, leaving me with $100 saved every month.

It's not much money, but one person could live on what I just laid out above.

I'm in Leicester - I can't afford a job in London because of how much it'd cost to get there. Plus I don't like London that much. I have a degree and I want a job that requires me to actually think and be creative, rather than just be nice to people and smile (because I'm actually quite bad and that).

I've not actually got any experience of office work, because of 3 years of bar work and similar while at uni. But now all the employers seem to want office experience.

It's the scholarship that really helps...it saves us $11,000 a year so we only have to pay about $7,000 room and board. Of that, I'm taking out $2,600 in loans leaving $4,400 for my parents to pay.

It's not bad, not bad at all...

Most likely; I'm going to a state school so it's a good deal cheaper than a private one (plus, OSU's Fisher College of Business is the 2nd best in the US in finance) and I can get a lot of additional money from the government or college scholarships.

And if my debt gets really bad, I can just go in to something like the peace corps or teach in an inner city school to get most or all of it forgiven...

My town, which is thirty miles North of Houston, has around 20,000 people living in and around it (it's pretty spread out). The rent is expensive, usually being around just under $1,000 a month for mid-range places... Though you get what you pay for, because this place has a lot of things to do.

Rent here rarely gets over $700 or so for a house, but this is a college town so most rentals are 3-4 bedroom units, which go for about $250-300 per person. I snagged up one of the few 1 bedroom units in town that is livable.

We're about 150 miles northwest of Detroit or 70 miles north of Lansing so there really isn't a whole lot to do. The town almost doubles in size when the students are here, but there still isn't a ton to do if you're not into the whole drunken frat thing.

Coca Cola is a brand. Coke is a fuel. But what I meant was a Coca Cola. Soda is something that used to be jerked in the 1930s to 1950s before they decided soda was not where it was at for hep cats and carbon dioxide was the way forward as long as you had not recently contracted malaria.

In the hospital I used to work at they called that department transportation and the people doing it were transporters.

Yeah, something like that. My ID tag, when translated into english, says I carry the vague title of "technician". It somehow doesn't sound quite right.

Coke is a brand, people.

Meh. What's your point. So are Velcro, Linoleum, Kleenex, Xerox, Band-aid, Aspirin (though no longer in the US), Zipper, Cellophane, Crock Pot, Escalator and Spandex. People use those in the generic form all the time.

Uh... no. Coke is a kind of soda. Band-aids are band-aids. Zippers are zippers.

no, Band-aid is a brand of adhesive bandage.

It's like when people call clear tape "Scotch Tape" even thought it's not...

or when they call those tubs with jets Jaccuzi's when they are not

I can't really gripe much though, being from Oklahoma I do the "Coke" when I mean something other than "Coke" too.

Yup, messed up there. But I have never heard of there being an alternative to band-aids. Only brand I'm aware of.

One brand name/generic item from the UK is "Zimmer"

Vise grips and mole grips and crescent wrenches and Channel Locks and Skil Saws arent always made by the company with the brand name they are called by. Ive seen some Harleys without a single component from Milwaukee.

There are better ones than Band Aid out there. With better stretch than Band Aid's stretchy ones which joined the stretchy market late. Brits call their version of Band Aids "plasters"

Yeah, I personally find eating during the movie to be distracting. Most other people don't agree and when you pay five bucks for a large popcorn and four bucks for a large soda, the money starts to come in. :)

Uh... no. Coke is a kind of soda. Band-aids are band-aids. Zippers are zippers.

Actually, Band-Aids are a type of adhesive bandage. They get really snarky about it because, like Bayer, they don't want to lose their trademark. Same with Xerox (it's more properly a photocopy in generic form), Kleenex (disposable tissues) and, I believe, a few others on that list.

Rollerblades mean one company's offering -- everyone else sells "in-line skates".

I'm a student...it seems like I've been a student forever.

I also work the front desk at a hotel, 3rd shift (I'm at work now, actually)...been doing it for a little over two years.

It's a pretty easy job, doesn't pay great, but it's worth my time...and it gives me a chance to do school work.

That said...I have to deal with drunk/crazy/idiotic people all the time, and it can get a little irritating.

But I have you people to keep me company. :)
