What is the best colour scheme for a flag?

I've been wondering this for a while, is it possible to have a subjective opinion on the best colours for a national flag? Or will your preferences ultimately be decided by your nationality? For example, I think that red, white and blue are the best colours for a flag (the red and blue are very striking and noble colours, and the white balances the two out perfectly), but am I bound to think that after ninteen years of indoctrination by the British state?

Do Germans and Belgians feel the same basic aesthetic connection to gold, red and black? Are Arabs enamoured by the pan-Arabic colours (black, red and white) or do Africans favour the pan-African colours (black, red, green and yellow).

There will be a not-very-good poll.

Black and blue (http://www.nationstates.net/images/flags/uploads/dissonant_cognition.jpg) is far superior. Of course, by saying the words "black and blue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruise)" out loud, I begin to have doubts.

I like a burnt orange on a black background. sort of like Halloween colors. i also like red white and blue, buts because they already mean something to me since they are my national colors.

LOL, i just remembered that Simpsons episode where George Washington ran out of puple hearts and rainbows or whatever so had to settle on stars and stripes. :p

I picked blue mostly cause red, pink/purple, green, and gold were taken. I really wanted a blue ama-gi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Amagi.png) on a black background instead of stripes, but unfortunately it is already taken by the "anarcho"-capitalist element (that, and it enjoys statist protectionism in the form of a "trademark" by Liberty Fund, Inc. ...oh the irony...).

Depends on what you want the flag to represent. Red/white/blue is a common combination; they're also the pan-Slavic colours. I believe a precursor of the Arab League used a red, white, green and black flag (hence the preference), but if you're looking for realism, try to keep darker colours apart with white or yellow.

For my flag, I took my town's civic colours, and butchered the Slovakian arms. So just go for something you're happy with.

Blues and whites definitely belong on a flag. I'm uncertain as to reds and blacks. Green, save for in very tiny increments, should not be on flags. Yellows are ok, but less desirable than most colors.

"In the mid-3rd millennium, writing direction was changed to left to right in horizontal rows (rotating all of the pictograms 90° counter-clockwise in the process), and a new wedge-tipped stylus was used which was pushed into the clay, producing wedge-shaped ('cuneiform') signs; these two developments made writing quicker and easier. By adjusting the relative position of the tablet to the stylus, the writer could use a single tool to make a variety of impressions. The word 'cuneiform' comes from the Latin word cuneus, meaning 'wedge.'"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarcho-capitalist_symbolism#Libertatis_.C3.86quilibritasLol. Yeah, at least left-anarchists are only silly with our having symbols for anarchism; we don't pick symbols that are directly contradictory.

I don't like the red/white/blue combination. There are way too much flags like that.

I'm surrounded by Great Britain (red/white/blue), France (red/white/blue), the Netherlands (red/white/blue), Luxembourg (red/white/blue) and... Germany. I'm glad we picked the colors of the latter. Must have been a close one.

As for black, red, gold for Germany, those come from the regimental colors of the Lützowsche Freikorps, a student regiment that fought in the Napoleonic wars. There's no other connection to Belgium beside Waterloo.
