Advice for Boxing

Tonight I have the grand glory of boxing one of my room mates. It's not going to be dangerous-we're going to have full masks on for protection- but I'd like some advice on boxing in general. I'm a bit more technical than he is, but he's stronger, faster and has more stamina than I do. Just wondering if there are any amateur tips(I'm not formally trained, it's damn hard to find a gym up here, we do it for fun) would be great. I really don't want to be completely rocked. :/

Hopefully Sean "The Pheonix"(No matter how many times you think I'm done, I keep coming back) will win in the 7-round match.

Funny. Any real advice? Tactics, anyone?

Hit him in the solar plexus everytime it's open, try to avoid getting hit and don't lead with a hook.

Use your feet. Nobody expects a good solid kick in a boxing match.

7 rounds for untrained boxers????
Wow.
You're going to be wasted.
He's stronger AND has more stamina?
Your technical advantage better be good.

Keeps your hands up, protect yourself, back away if you need to and watch him well for the first bit. Find what and when he leaves himself open and exploit it fast.

here is some advice i picked up from the boxing instructor at the gym i go to (i take muay thai; i like to use more than just hands)

1. dont look for that big knockout punch. a lot of small fast punches will do a better job of rocking your opponent
2. punches to the gut, the kind that knock the wind out of you, are more devastating than hard punches to the head. why? because you can recover from a head shot given a moment, but getting the wind knocked out of you takes a long time to recover from.
3. ALWAYS keep your hands up to protect you. Never drop them.

stronger isn't a big issue.....but if he's faster and has more stamina....there is very little you can do unless your technique is WAY better. with speed and stamina he's already 90% of the way to victory. come out of your corner fast each round...it would give him a boost if he sees you tired. try a jab followed by a hook with the same hand; some people move their hand a little forward ready to intercept a following jab, but then your hook goes around it. and then after you practice those......go on a run and do some burnouts with a bag. that way, you can be prepared for the NEXT time you fight.

Boxing a roommate? Here's some advice:

Reinforce the corners and seams with strapping tape. Don't use bubble wrap. Use foam peanuts. They provide more uniform support for fragile roommates. Especially when jostled. :)

I boxed my friend a few times. I would just do some silly boxing motions and he would laugh and let his guard down. Try making your opponent laugh.

Ah, yes. Well, that's a mistake you only make once. :)

When he hits your head hold your neck stiff and lean into it rather than pulling back. To tell where he is actually going rather than where he feigns going pay attention to the center of his mass (a little above his naval probably) instead of his extremities or eyes. This is boxing and not fighting to defend yourself or harm him. It's seven rounds which, if you arent careful, will likely have you too fatigued to be effective at the end. So it is a pretty good idea to NOT go in with everything you can muster at the start. Actually that is usually only a good idea in boxing if youve stunned the guy and have a good chance of knocking him out/down. Keep in your crouch and mostly jab and defend against him and counterpunch when he leaves you openings. You might end up with more bruises but will probably win the fight if neither has boxed before.

Move. Keep moving. Fists up. Look for openings.

Most of the good advice has already been said.

Oh, and if you break your nose, make sure you don't fall asleep face down.

Ah, well, this is where I have a much larger advantage than he does. His right hooks are massive-one good, solid hit will pretty much end the night. However, he cocks his right arm extremely far, and brings his left hand down from his face for a second just before he hits. I'm think a quick left jab followed by a right hook/uppercut would do the the trick most of the time. As I said, he has very little technique.

And we may just end the night at 5 rounds. Depdending on how well we are doing.

...

Son of a... Well, I'll have to work with it. Everybody would expect "Phoenix" who would expect "Pheonix"? Yep.

I think what I'm going to have to do is get in close, work some infighting as all of his strong punches are long and wide, back off, and go defensive, rinse repeat. Ideas?

He has more stamina so you have to knock him out. You dont have time to pussyfoot around.

Work his body, immediately assume control of the cadence and circle to your left--this will make it harder for him to move for the right hook into knock out position moving into the punch area will force him to hit you with it (if he does) off of its power apex meaning it will be empty of its devastating effect--the closer you get to his shoulder on the unload the less power it will have.

Drop your forehead into the hook or slip it, go left to the ribs feign right tothe head, then left to the head---hooks

be agressive because as I said you dont have time to feck with him.

When you left hook to the head throw it with your elbow as high as you can and still have power this should almost look like the punch is going down for him.
This will have your elbow in position to contact his face if he slips the punch or even if you connect with good follow through--the elbow will cut him.

Watch your points and dont try to flurry him--because if he has more stamina you cant pepper like he can.

He wont expect you to circle into his power immediately this is why you cant wait to do---

Punch his right tricpe whenever you get him to cover--beat on that arm--turn it jelly.

grind your thumb into it in the clinch--pinch it if you can.

Make the muscle breakdown.

I dont know I have never seen you fight or seen him so I cant give real good advice--I can only do it based on your post.

If he is stronger faster and has more stamina I will be honest and say he is going to kill you--unless you are a fecking technician--which if you really were you wouldnt be asking NS generalites for Boxing advice.

Good luck.

That helps a lot actually. He is much stronger, and can be much faster, but the problem is he never seems to use it. He goes for power punches, with no technique at all. His punches are easily readable. However, I am concerned on whether he will start using technique and tactics instead of his powershots.

Aim for charlie-horses. He can't throw big punches if his arms feel like lead.

U said he cocks his right hook right back. wait 4 him 2 cock it right bak and hammer exposed shoulder. Enough times and he wont b able 2 lift right arm or punch u with it. Another idea is (u gotta hav good coordination 2 pull this off) wait 4 the hook and duck under it. prepare a right hook as u duck and move 2 his right. stand up and let him hav the hook and turn as u hook 4 more of an impact. Thats a technique advantage
