I speak English (obviously) and enough Indonesian to make myself understood, though I'm not fluent. With that, I can usually make myself understood to Malaysians too, but the two languages are different enough that it takes a considerably greater amount of gesticulation to achieve the same result. :p

Yes. I'm in my third year of Latin at school, AP Latin. We're reading Ovid's Metamorphoses now. Learning Latin has also helped me to better understand how Romance languages function, as well as to increase my understanding of grammar in general and my vocabulary. Also, I like to translate things into Latin sometimes.

The thing is, Ovid also used stories that weren't his own. Like Pyramus and Thisbe, which was really a Babylonian story. Romeo and Juliet is basically a Pyramus and Thisbe story, as is West Side Story. And if you look at some of the lyrics in West Side Story, parts of it are directly from Ovid. So I suppose people are just modernizing a very old story, using words from the old story itself.

speak fluently? English

I speak enough Spanish to probably get by, I can communicate, but I can't write it (bad grammar) and can only sometimes read it, I can understand a lot more spoken than I remember how to respond to. It seems to work out for me though, my broken Spanish + their broken English= a fun ESL class (I haven't taught in 2 or 3 years though, I used to be better back then)

I understand a fair amount of French, can read some, can't speak it worth a flip.

I know a song in Japanese.

I know about 30 songs in German, but don't know what they are about.

I can read latin, greek, and a small amount of hebrew, but can't speak it... haven't ever tried to listen so I don't know....

short answer? English. :p

I live in the Netherlands, so Dutch comes with the package.

Somewhere in my childhood I picked up English, probably from TV, improved with computer/internet use. (My teacher told me I had a good vocabulary, but lousy pronunciation)

German and French I can read reasonably, and stammer enough to be understood (hands and feet required). German is close enough to Dutch to be able to understand (hearing) it reasonably. As for french speakers: "Lentement S'il vous Plaît".

Latin from school, rusting as we speak. I never paid attention to the deflections* (ServUS, servI, servO, etc...).
Same for ancient Greek, but to illustrate: There's a difference between ancient greek and ancient greek?!? (ref: Hellenistic and Byzantine)

Most Germanic languages (Dutch, German, Frisian, Norwegian, Swedish etc.) are similiar enough to be readable to me, but I do wish paper had hands and feet...

The change in noun ending looks like cases (nominative, accusative etc.), by deflections you probably mean declensions such as first (e.g. ancilla),and second (e.g. servus).

[QUOTE=Lerkistan;11813855- Latinam lego, sed non comprehenderem si locuta esset (I can read Latin, but wouldn't understand if it were spoken (how the hell are you supposed to build the passive of one of these passive verbs?)[/QUOTE]

Maybe use passive of dico instead of loquor. Also use present tense, not imperfect: non comprehendam si dicatur.

I'm fluent in Dutch and English.
I can understand German and hold a decent conversation. (I still find it difficult to integrate all the grammar into the talking.)
I can also understand French because of school and my trips to Belgium. Actually speaking it is still difficult though.

I can read Latin. I'm in my fourth year of learning it now, translating writings from Ovidius, Caesar and Plinius.
On the the servUS, servI,... thing: In Dutch their called "verbuigingen" which also means deflections. Hence the use of the word deflections by my fellow Dutchman :)

I can also speak a little Gronings, although that's more of a dialect and I can imitate Flemish quite well ;)

Just one person who speaks Esperanto btw? :(
I really want to learn that language. It's just that I don't have the time and that nobody speaks it...

I also want to learn Spanish and Russian but that'll have to wait I guess

I speak English. A few words of Spanish (minimal basic words and of course some bad words.) Also, a few French words, not nearly as much as I used to know.

I can speak spanish (I'm trying to work away from my very Cuban accent ^^;;), english, spanglish (in my household and in miami, it's necessary).

I took a bit of latin some time back though so that backround mixed with my spanish helps me to understand many of the romance languages (especially italian)

I didn't until I started learning German, so I would say that there are others who don't know. Romanar might be one of those people.

I have just recently started studying German so I was wondering about the Languages spoken by the rest of you.
I speak a little bit of German after doing a school year in that course. I had wanted to do it for GCSE, but because of the fact that I wasn't qualified enough at my school (I had to be in Set One Chinese in order to take two courses in language, which I was not in, I was in Set Three Chinese), I had to drop it.

Chinese, I've learned it since I was little, but found it difficult and as a result it was a second language for me. The only reason why I picked it for GCSE was an issue of face: being ethnically Chinese I did not want to look like a banana. The reason why I've always found Mandarin Chinese difficult is thanks to the pinyin of it, and the draconian years of my primary and kindergarten years. Having a strict mother didn't help and hitting me due to impatience caused me to panick about it even more.

Hence why English is my mother tongue as a result. I used to use British English, but changed over to American soon afterword thanks to the fact I've always had an admiration for the United States and what it stands for to me. (And no, I'm not from the United Kingdom, but my family background came from a former UK colony and I was born in a place that was a UK colony not too long ago....care to take a guess people which places are those?)

English is my first Language. I've taken Spanish for more then 8 years, so I speak it quite well. I took Arabic for 2 years and learned next to nothing. I can understand some and speak a little Italian, so that's probably what I want to make my 3rd language if I can.
