Interesting BBC article on Egypt's Mubarak, who, as of October 14, 2006, will have been in power a quarter of a century.

Thoughts on Mubarak?

I voted option #3. Mubarak has done little that is praise-worthy. Corruption in the government is rampant, democracy is a sham, and the economy is shit, but when compared to the Saudis or to what's-his-face in Iran, he's not so bad.

Compared to Stalin, Bush ain't so bad, but I still wouldn't vote for him.

...

That's about all I can add to this thread. I'm ashamed to say that my knowledge of this man is limited entirely to his name, what was on that link, and what you just said. :(

he is good if you consider that if he fall, he would replace by "the muslim brothers"- other version of hammas, hizbulla and other muslim fundementalist organizations.
if you compare him to anuar sadat (the former leader) he worse, but in middle eastren standarts he fine.

He's not bad at all by ME standards, he's cracked down on extremists more than any current leader in the ME. Hopefully when he steps down he will be succeeded by a modern, democratic government in a peaceful, progressive Egypt

That'd be nice, but I think we're looking at the beginning of a family dynasty here.
