Passwords and the like

Just to get something out of the way: If you're stupid enough to give out hints as to what your password might be then it's your own fault if your accound gets hacked.

With that taken care of: How secure are you with your passwording? I'm sure we all know that we should have a different password for every site, and that they should be random sequences of numbers and letters. But let's face it, nobody has that great a memory(well most of us don't).So do you have just a few passwords for everything? Do you have a lot? Are you a super genius who makes up a random apssword for every site and remembers them all?

I usually just make new versions of the old passwords. Most I just use old 2 or 3 different passwords.

I can think of six different passwords that I use on a daily basis.

And that's much as I'll say regarding this topic...

I am pretty poor with passwords. I generally use the same ones, and Firefox saves most of them, so anyone who stole my computer could have fun with Amazon or eBay until my bank account was empty.

Having said that, it wouldn't take very much to empty my account, so it's not that much of a risk, and all my online banking passwords are different to everything else and never saved.

I pick some words that I associate with the site/software (in a 'lateral thinking' fashion), and then apply a not-too-complicated algorithm to produce a random looking password. If I forget the password, I can work it out again within a few minutes (assuming I don't also forget the words I associate with the site...).

I have various passwords, of varying strengths. The one I use for forums isn't very strong, but it's quick to type and if it's hacked - so what?
For more important things I use much stronger passwords. In fact, I should go change some of them.

I'm currently using 7 passwords for different pages and applications. About half of them are completely random.

I don't use online banking or even shop online, so I don't think my passwords need to be completely and perfectly save.

Since I didn't say myself(and because spam is teh great) I have different passwords for different thing. Like I usually have the same password for internet games, a different one for forums, a different one again for email.

my email and bank passwords aren't proper words, but they're still 'words' so they're easy to remember. My NS password is just a word I used to use for everything. I have another few words I use for dodgier sites.

I'm just wondering why the hell anyone in the world would be interested in taking over someone's NS nation. I mean .... yeesh.

That said .... my passwords are never what anyone would expect them to be.

I've never had any account hacked. Ever.

i think technically i could argue my case on this one... the object is the Personal Identification Number, and i am remembering the number(s) of my PIN... but lets face it, who really cares? :P

Yeah, IMS PIN number is one of these thingies that you can get away with. Ah yes wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAS_syndrome) will save us.

I find it... Concerning... That people rely on software to remember passwords. If you wouldn't tell your most trusted friend or relative your passwords (and you wouldn't, right?) why would you trust a software developer you've never met?

I use all combinations

Leters(upper and lower case), numbers special charicters they are randomly memorized, no words or word transformations (leet)

I usualy keep three groupings ...
general use (standard website material)
Standard account use (more important websites to me such as nationstates or other frequent non general sites)

And Financial ... for anything dealing with money

And I change them every 60 days, all of them.

i have about 3 passwords that i geniuly make variations of when i dont want to use the same password for certain stuff.

something such as nationstates that doesnt contain any personal information i just use a simple password.

for online games to get my firends to be able to join my game we use a simple password genuily something like "apple". the password is only used so we dont get alot of other poeple joingin our game while we are waiting on someone else.

for really personal important stuff (bank accounts, online school crap, etc...) i use seperate passwords.

Apart from the occasional original (and those are pretty damn original) password, I make use of various systems of varying complexity I have made since I began using computers, each of which can be used to make quite a few passwords that are easy to remember, as you only need to remember a small part as well as the system used. None of my passwords have ever been cracked.

I try to keep my passwords pretty long -- hell, alot of the ones I use are 10 characters or more. It keeps nosy-ass people watching the screen/keyboard out of my shit --- after about six characters, they go "damn that's a long password" and stop watching, lol

Different passwords for most online sites, between 8-10 characters (capital, small, numbers, sometimes a special character), following a system that helps me remember. The greatest risk to online passwords is having them "cross-contaminated" by using them on an untrustworthy site, and then using them on other sites like email providers.

Ultimately, don't trust a site that stores your password in clear text (if the site can send it to your email address, it can also show it to the admin) rather than storing an md5 hash (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MD5) of it. Even if it does hash them, use a complex password because there are tons of reverse-dictionary MD5 crackers online.

I seem to remember an unscrupulous NSer using an off-site forum for stealing nations. Don't worry about InvisionFree (the most common one) by the way, it's impossible to access member passwords there.

Even if you do use the same passwords for game and forum accounts (impersonation and game pwnage is nasty, but not life-threatening), never use them for email accounts. If your email is compromised, you're in a deep mess.If you use the same email for online presence as you do for real-life things, they can read your bank statements and private conversations. They can also hijack all other accounts registered with it. They can request "password reminders" and then delete them. If the site will give out the password rather than resetting it, they can even do it undetected.
Which leads to the biggest problem of all: Once they know several different passwords you use, they're likely to guess the rest as well.

I optimized my passwords so you can not guess the rest if you know some. Some are easy since I do not go to these forums often, some are weird, some are based on what the voices inside of my head say to me...
