Yes.

No retard, they were a gift. She gave them to me because we've been dating for a year, today.

the intraweb does not translate humor well. Plus I'm tired from 2 days of straight studying - it was midterm week for me.

Shit is cool

I take it they are decorative, and not functional?

Cause if they are functional, she might be sending you a not so subtle message. :p

That shit certainly is cool. Wicked cool. If this is what you get just for one year hang the hell on to this woman - think of the rewards further down the road :D

Yes, that was an incredibly shallow and awful thing to say, but true nonetheless. And of course I was referring also to the emotional rewards.

Now, I have to ask: Do you know how to handle them correctly? http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y223/GermanNightmare/Samurai.gif

Yes, they are decoreatives.

For one thing, I know very well how much the real things cost, and I doubt even a shingunto is within the price range of such a gift.... (A real shingunto in functional condition would be US$2-3000 to start with. And anyone selling a "real ninjato" is selling you a real fake. Period.)

>.> Now, when you say a set of three Samurai swords, I'm guessing you mean a tanto, wakizashi, and katana, since that's the common 'set', but what exactly did you get?

I have an edgeless wakizashi myself, not much use but it sure looks cool ^^

Samurai swords are vastly overrated in my opinion, but yours still look pretty flashy.

Give me a Rapier or a Shamshir and I'll have some fun, but I've never been satisfied with Katanas or Wakizashi.

Have you contacted the Japanese Embassy? They usually handle that sort of thing.

While I can admit to finding Japaneese swords pleasing to the eye, I can't stand them as weapons.

Give me a German longsword (not to be confused with a greatsword/zweihander!), which is largely known to the uneducated as a bastard sword. It is a piece of swordsmithing that I find far superior to the katana, and which, in trained hands, is the deadliest bladed weapon.

At least, in my estimation and opinion. I am severely biased in that matter.

Also, I'm pretty sure all bladed weapons are equally deadly in trained hands.

Ones that snap if they hit bone tend to not be very good.

By the way, never try to become blood brothers with someone using a katana. I witnessed two guys try this. Not good.

Pretty nice.

I have a jian, myself. Decorative, but most martial arts competitions require that weapons used for demonstrations be edgeless, and that was a deciding factor for me. I guess there've been cases of competitors flipping out and attacking the judges for poor scores.

Don't exist anymore.

Close. Try there never was such a beast. The "ninjato" is a modern creation.

Ninjato

Actually, there is no such thing as a special purpose ninja sword, although Hollywood and Toei filmstudios want to make us believe that. But neither ninja nor "Onmitsu Doshin", the undercover agents of the Edo police, had a "standard" short sword with a straight blade, square tsuba and black fittings.

Present day SWAT teams and military commandos use special or modified weapons to suit their task, and so did assassins and spies of the Edo period. A shorter sword slung over the back might have proven useful for penetrating a castle and combat in confined spaces, but different situations would have called for a different sword. "Ninjato" has a nice ring to it, but the "sword shopping guide for spies" has yet to be discovered ...

Ninjutsu is really cool.

Anyone who tells you they teach ninjitsu is a bullshit liar. The last real ninja died long ago. (Masaaki Hatsumi is a scam artist on the level of Elron, and his school is a McDojo franchise of the worst sort.)

My baby is a WWII Naval Officers sword. I've been trying to track down the family to return it to them.

Do you know any details about it? Is it a kai gunto or is it an antique? If the former, I'd be tempted to keep it. If it's a genuine antique, I'd really, really, really be tempted to keep it, but would feel obliged to return it.

Have you contacted the Japanese Embassy? They usually handle that sort of thing.

Seconded.

I'm surprised you would actually want to return that.

As I said above, it would depend if it was a mass produced kai gunto or a real antique.

I got one of those paul chen 'pratical katanas' a few years ago, after doing shinkendo for a couple years. Not a bad deal.

It's fun, and is adequate for tameshigiri, as well as opening durian melons and destroying laundry baskets and flora.

I looked more into the swords after a bunch of people decided they wanted to try and be "cool" and tell me how stupid I am (on another forum).

Anyway, the steel that they forge these blades with is 440 quality. The swords are false edged.

Basically, these are practice swords, use them to practice with friends so you don't really need protection because they can't really cut, and use them to practice on other objects or just generally hone skills.

They are not the best swords available, but for as much as I know/can do, they are more than adequete.

And yes, my girlfriend is amazing.

For the price of one junky specimen of each of those you could get a Springfield 1911 and have a lot more fun.

Don't worry about it. As long as you know they're decorative fakes, and don't go on about how cool you are because yo have "real samurai swords!" , it's cool. I have a very nice decorative fake myself.

Save up your money. As I pointed out above, a mass produced WW II era shin gunto will start at US$1-2000. If you want a real handcrafted blade, the price will start closer to US$10,000... And an antique...

(I purchased the aforementioned fake in a shop here. I saw the price tags for the real things myself. I know whereof I speak... ;))
