I got a bottle of real Absinthe from Prague and I'm looking forward to drinking it but was just wondering if anyone here can advise on the side-effects.I have had the shite fake stuff but I've heard the real thing can be a bit loco.

The hallucinogenic properties are greatly overstated, if existent at all. I just got normal drunk when I sucked on a bottle of Czech Absinthe when I was in Europe.

Drinking absinthe is no different than getting drunk off anything else.
The comments about it being hallucinogenic are grossly overblown. It does nothing; any effects you feel from drinking it are due to its high alcohol content.
Additionally, make sure you get the traditional stuff, not the new crap they call absinthe. If it doesn’t go from green to white when you add a little water, it isn’t any good (IMHO).
The simplest way to do it is to pour about a shot into an old-fashioned glass, put a sugar cube or two in a tea strainer over the glass and pour about 3 shots worth of cold water through it. You can use only 2 parts water, but I recommend an extra lump of sugar if you do that.

It's just alcohol, nothing special about it. Real stuff that is. Why it's illegal in the US is beyond me (and yes I know the history of it).
My friend here is telling me to put the spoon and sugar over the glass and pour absinthe over it.Light the cube so it melts into the glass and drink it as a shot.Not sure thats the best idea I ever heard but I gotta try.

there are two styles to prepare it...Parisian, and Bohemian
Parisian, you pour a shot of absinthe into a glass, put a sugar cube in a slotted spoon, and pour ice cold water (3-5x as much as you have absinthe) over it.
Bohemian, you dip the sugar into the absinthe, light it, and then pour in the water. Be a little careful with this method, as it will ignite the absinthe in the glass. Not an issue, but can be shocking if you aren't expecting it.
Also, if it is bohemian/czech absinthe, don't expect it to turn white. Most of these don't use the anise and other herbs that cause this effect. It will also usually be more bitter.

Well the low quality stuff often had some toxic additives so they had a legitimate reason to ban the crap stuff, but the high end absinthe was never any worse than any other boozahol.
