FIFA World Player of the Year

Yep, it's that time of year again, when the world's 'best' players get nominated for the highest individual honour in football. Here are this year's nominees:

Adriano (Inter Milan, Brazil)
Michael Ballack (Chelsea, Germany)
Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus, Italy)
Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid, Italy)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United, Portugal)
Petr Cech (Chelsea, Czech Republic)
Deco (Barcelona, Portugal)
Didier Drogba (Chelsea, Ivory Coast)
Michael Essien (Chelsea, Ghana)
Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona, Cameroon)
Luis Figo (Inter Milan, Portugal)
Gennaro Gattuso (AC Milan, Italy)
Steven Gerrard (Liverpool, England)
Thierry Henry (Arsenal, France)
Kaka (AC Milan, Brazil)
Miroslav Klose (Werder Bremen, Germany)
Philippe Lahm (Bayern Munich, Germany)
Frank Lampard (Chelsea, England)
Jens Lehmann (Arsenal, Germany)
Alessandro Nesta (AC Milan, Italy)
Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan, Italy)
Franck Ribery (Marseille, France)
Juan Roman Riquelme (Villarreal, Argentina)
Ronaldinho (Barcelona, Brazil)
Wayne Rooney (Manchester United, England)
Tomas Rosicky (Arsenal, Czech Republic)
Andriy Shevchenko (Chelsea, Ukraine)
Lilian Thuram (Barcelona, France)
Patrick Vieira (Inter Milan, France)
Zinedine Zidane (retired, France)

Two simple questions - who's going to win it, and who deserves to win it?

Three English players on it (though fuck knows why Lampard and Rooney are in it, and Gerrard can only be described as lucky to be on the shortlist), and 12 players from English clubs.

The frontrunners are probably Klose, Henry and Cannavaro. Lehmann and Buffon should have a decent chance as well, but goalkeepers never seem to get recognised.

I say Cannavaro wins it but only Scottie Parker deserves it.

And what the fuck is Christiano Ronaldo doing on the list?

Lehmann deserves it, he's had an amazing 12 months. That said, so has Riquelme, so maybe he'll get it  Lehmann gets it for me though, although thats probably because im a biased Arsenal fan :p :p :p

Ronaldinho/Zidane will get it, because the Player of the Year awards always only go on opinion, not on actual performance.

No England player deserves to be on the list, they have been utter pants in the last twelve months. DEATH TO ROONEY!!:mp5::sniper: :mp5: :sniper: :mp5: :p

I hope Henry wins it. He deserves it more than any of them, especially after he didn't win it in '03 or '04. I would be more than happy if Lehmann won it though - he was absolutely outstanding for Germany at the World Cup, and he was part of the Arsenal team that set the new record for consecutive clean sheets in the Champions' League. The only thing he's done wrong all year was being sent off in the CL final, and the referee said after the game that he should just have booked him.

If these things were decided on appearance, Zidane has no chance and Leonardo would have won every award going when he was still a player.

With a name like Kaka, he could use the morale boost. Here's hoping he wins.

Zinedine Zidane will win it, neither keeper or Henry will win it. Lehman deserves it in my view, that one man difience at Anfield is a great example of why he deserves it

Ooh, forgot about that. And the shot he took in the face from Cristiano Ronaldo a few weeks back :)

Scott Parker aside, the only player on that list who gives 100% for his team in every match winning or losing, showing true dedication is Gennaro Gattuso.

My heart says Rooney, if only in light of his glittering form last season, however, I believe it will be either Cannavaro or, and this is a genuine possibility, Zidane.

You're a moron arent you? An affront to the gene pool if I'm not mistaken.

Biased gooner indeed.... Rooney had been inspirational for United prior to that joke of a ban, and Lehmann should be banned for his tackle, sorry, clothesline, upon Del Piero/Iaquinta/Toni in the semi-finals.

Zidane should get it.

I would say Ribery, but he hasn't quite achieved full potential yet.

Only the year does cover more then up to the summer and he was not that good. If maybe he could score at the top level, he might have a chance and avoiding getting sent off

You mean that collision? The one where Italy had no problem with? Lehman had to dive to punch the ball away, managed it but the momentum carried the two players into each other. It looked bad till I saw the replay I'll admit but if it had been a foul, don't you think the Italy team would have been calling for a penalty?

I'd say Lehmann deserves it more than any of the others.
Personally, I'd vote for Ballack, but that's just cause he's incredibly cute... http://iniaes.org/forums/images/smilies/new/pigtails.gif

The Italians call for penalties even if it there isn't a foul. Remember the match against Australia...

Some of those names shouldnt be on that list!

I say:

1. Klose
2. Podolski
3. Ballack

and I'm not even German.

So does everybody though the Germany-Italy game was very sporting.. My point is that the Italians didn't call it despite having a player going down inside the box, perhaps out of being sporting or becuase they knew the ref wouldn't belive them.

Gary Caldwell!! :D

Should be quite close though- a few deserve it, but not Zidane :headbang:
Dont think Rooney should be there, i didnt think he's had a great year since the 'metatarsal incident'.
