Will 'Bully' be declared a public nuisance?

In case you missed it, Jack Thompson's lawsuit against Rockstar's upcoming game 'Bully' is currently held in Florida.

GamePolitics (http://www.gamepolitics.com/) and Destructoid (http://www.destructoid.com/my-afternoon-with-jack-thompson-part-1) have some coverage on the case.

See also GameSpot (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6159704.html) and Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bully_%28video_game%29#Controversy).

The ruling is expected tomorrow.

What are your oppinions and thoughts on that matter?

Burn Jack Thompson at the stake. >_>

It's in a computer game, that clearly means everyone who sees it will copy it exactly.

Oh, and the wiki article mentioned someone calling it a 'Columbine simulator'. Yeah, there already is one of them.

Bully (or Canem Canis Edit, as it's known elsewhere) will doubtless become a best seller after this hoo-har ;)

No, but I hope we make Jack Thompson a public nuisance :)

I went to the Bully website and watched a trailer for the game - at the end the rating given was T (for Teen). No idea what the detractors are afraid of here, especially if you were to compare it to any of the GTA series (which I assume you can buy in Florida ;) ). So yeah, the only thing these lawsuits will do is provide free advertising for the game.

Looks pretty good, but I only play PC games, and IIRC, it won't be available to PC gamers...:(

Nope. VC and SA are both considered to be part of GTA III somehow.

The next installment of the series will be GTA 4. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GTA4)

I wouldn't give Thompson any credit; this is the same guy who has previously stated that The Sims 2 can be used by pedophiles to help them plan what they want to do to young children. He also said that the sims were always naked and had prominant features like nipples and pubic hair as well as sexual parts...

Last I checked, you can't get ANY of that without downloading skins, and they are just skins at that.

There are no modders who will make a mod that allows for children to be exploited in the game. I know someone wanted to make a mod that allowed for incest but the Mod the Sims 2 community lynched the person who proposed it.

Honestly? This guy doesn't know squat about video games.

The people who complain the most about the content are those who only see what is on TV, and not the actual game.

Yes, there are really violent games out there, but that is the design.

If parents and educators are really worried about the influence of video games, maybe instead of banning and putting the games out of the reach of children, since the taboo will make the acquisition all the more tempting, they should try and understand why the children like these games and get involved to educate the children the difference between fantasy and reality.

As for "Bully", the real problem is ignorance.

Actually, Thompson is quite knowledgeable about video games - he just chooses to misrepresent them and often outright lies about them, despite his better knowledge. That has been shown several times.

True. It was really fun to read about all those people protesting against Bully, under the assumption it would be a game where the player would play the role of a bully (given that no real information about the game had been published for a long time). As it turned out that the opposite was true, groups started suddenly started protesting against the game, because they said "it would make pupils fight back against bullies"...

Groups such as Bullying Online and Peaceaholics have criticized the game for glorifying or trivializing school bullying.
(from the wiki)
This quite amused me. If you assume a game about something trivialises it, I think that bullied children would not be quite as big an issue as WWII or Vietnam vets...

I still say this will never pass. Too much money to be made off of this game, and thus! as our country is for Big Buisness, and by Big buisness, this game will be on shelves at the appointed time.

Let's face it, it's rated Teen. If parents can't be bothered to at least look at the box of the games their children are buying, and there is no legally-enforced age-classification system in place (here in the UK games are regulated by the BBFC in the same manner as films), it's hardly the fault of the developers...

From what I learned about the game, yes, you can bully other students. However, there appears to be no deaths in it. No guns either. That's what seperates the Columbine massacre from Bully, other than the obvious difference between real life and a game: guns and death. Columbine had both. Bully has niether.

Please remember that Thompson is a politician, one who shares the same name as the guys who made the Thompson sub-machine gun, which you might remember as: the chomper, the chicago typewriter, the tommy gun, or the gun that made nazis piss in terror. It's Thompson's job to spew biased bullshit out of his mouth at all times. What do you think they do in Washington DC? Promote honesty? Please.

Haha! Clever. I like it. Actually, that's not a bad idea for a parody of GTA...hmm....

It isn't just bullies who would play it. And those who do might play it when they're on a bullying break and not as a full replacement for bullying. It just isn't the same, after all.
