Fact or Science fiction? The MN4 thread

The whole thing sounds like science fiction!
But the fact is: on Friday, April the 13th 2029, Asteroid MN4 will pass beneath our communications satellites
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2005/13may_2004mn4.htm?friend

In 2035 (on another Friday the 13th) it will return and may hit us.

And there is a plan to build a ship to divert it with gravity.
http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/051109_asteroid_tractor.html

Do we want to take the chance of ripping it apart while trying to divert it?
Would ripping it apart and taking our chances with smaller pieces be the best plan?
Thats one big damm ship. If it is going to be built, it needs to be started on soon.

Thoughts?

In 2035 (on another Friday the 13th) it will return and may hit us.

According to the NASA site article:
The asteroid's trajectory will bend approximately 28 degrees during the encounter, "a result of Earth's gravitational pull," explains Giorgini. What happens next is uncertain. Some newspapers have stated that the asteroid might swing around and hit Earth after all in 2035 or so, but Giorgini discounts that: "Our ability to 'see' where 2004 MN4 will go (by extrapolating its orbit) is so blurred out by the 2029 Earth encounter, it can't even be said for certain what side of the sun 2004 MN4 will be on in 2035. Talk of Earth encounters in 2035 is premature."
So it might not return in 2035.

The truth is revealed!

I knew North Korea wasn't building those nukes for evil intent! They've built them to prevent the comet from posibly hitting us! All hail our anti-comet saviours!

That's the day God has his prostate exam, and that always puts him in a bad mood.

A rare dose of humor from Wilgrove strikes.

Anyway, I think it's a wee bit premature to start building a ship just to send that asteroid away. Yeah, if the math eventually points to it hitting Earth, we should, and in the meantime have the design schematics perfected, but building a ship now that wouldn't be used for twenty years? Bad. Idea.

There's another one... I wonder why they bother, a 1 in 300 chance, and not to even come close for more than 800 years. Talk about long term planning, by then we probably have more than the TNT they suggest using...

I'd imagine the guitar solo would be a bit longer, and the words slightly more legible. But other than that....
