You know how you're supposed to be able to see the Great Wall of China from outer space?

Welll........how come I can't see it on google earth, then?

Aha! You have hit upon the very same thing I was wondering last friday...
If you type "Great Wall of China" into the search thing it even finds "it"... "it" because I don't know what exactly it finds.

Must be Chinese Government censorship, they don't want us to see their most strategic defense.

did you look for it manually? can you see anything NEAR the great wall?

Might be because most of it is in ruins now, except for the parts they maintain for the tourists.

It's impossible to see without magnification from space. Any comment saying it was visible was a myth.

Most Interstate Highways are wider than the wall and those can't be seen from space.

We're talking about imaging satellites that are MUCH closer than the moon, and have a large magnification. You can see people's houses with these things.

Because you can't really see it from space(to the human eye). It's a common myth. You're basically looking from something that is about as wide as a two lane highway.

Your history class lied to you.

Correcto (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_092)!

The things seen in Google Earth are magnified, or are taken by low-altitude aircraft.

You people seem a bit dense. None of you have heard of magnification?

That doesn't count. The claim about the Great Wall was that it could be seen with the naked eye from space. I can see my old swingset from space with google earth, but magnification =/= seeing it with the naked eye.

Thus the claim that the Great Wall of China is the only man made structure that can be seen from space with the naked eye is total bullshit.

Of course. Everybody knows there's whole worlds of walls to be seen from orbit.

Yo, if any of you are curious on how old the images used are, they're about two or three years. Found my Dad's new house, and all that's built there is the horse barn, which the last time that was the only biuldign on the property at all was about two or three years.

Yeah, but this thread has nothing to do with seeing the Great Wall with the naked eye, it's about seeing it with Google Earth.

Why the hell do you have to be an asshole and change my posts?

And actually, this entire thread is moot, as I found the great wall with Google Earth. :/

Just type in "The Great Wall of China", and it brings you there. It looks like a thin black line, and curves a lot.

Funny enough to get you warned. Knock it off.

The Muslims did it.

Uh, we're talking about a program that lets you see people's HOUSES, IDF, let alone the Great Wall of China.

I hate Muslims so much!!!1ROFLONE

Yeah, but this thread has nothing to do with seeing the Great Wall with the naked eye, it's about seeing it with Google Earth.

Actually, the first post asked first why he could not see it from space before he asked about Google Earth. I'd read more carefully before criticizing others for, you know, actually answering the question asked.

i typed that into google maps (earth fucks with my computer), it went straight there but i couldn't see anything, it would only magnify about two thirds up that slider thingy.

The Three Gorges Dam (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/5000092.stm) will show up a lot clearer than the wall I'm sure.

You don't. It's an urban myth from the early US Space Program, circa Mercury 2. Think it was Gus Grissom in some debriefing, he was exagerating about the clarity of which he can see things from orbit.

The reason you can't see it from space is because it's built out of the same material of the surrounding ground. It blends in at high altitudes. I doubt you could see it from commercial airline cruising altitude. Now if it was hot pink maybe...
