Apple Mecca

The fact that the building resembles the Ka'ba (see picture below), is called "Apple Mecca," is intended to be open 24 hours a day like the Ka'ba, and moreover, contains bars selling alcoholic beverages, constitutes a blatant insult to Islam.

Yeah, we all know how Muslim-hating the people at Apple are - just can't wait to insult Islam and make a point of desecrating a religion on purpose

In common parlance in the US, "Mecca" usually means a place where EVERYONE comes to gather. In a way, places like Graceland are a "Mecca" - and when we use the term that way, we're definitely NOT being insulting.

I guess you can't turn around today without pissing them off.

So the fact that it resembles the Ka'Ba is pure coincidence? I'd say a lot of christians would be offended if someone built an imitation church and used it as a brothel for example.

I dunno DK, the fact they contructed the building to look like the Ka'ba suggests that they have a different Mecca in mind than the term we are used to here. Sorta like building a whorehouse that is the spitting image of the Vatican.

You can't even really make a direct comparison with Christianity, since there isn't really anything as central to their faith as the Kaabah is to the Muslims. The nearest I can place it, it's like the people who got outraged over that avant-garde exhibit of the Virgin Mary painted with... "bodily waste products" -- which the artist explained represented traditional African ideas of fertility.

It's a bit shortsighted, to say the least.

Who cares. Build it, call it Mecca and sell drinks. If it pisses off some Muslims enough that they burn down a bunch of buildings that's their problem. Christians and Jews often get pissed off about this movie or that video game or this painting and we don't censor them. Why should we if it pisses some Muslims off?

Hmmmm.
1) As pointed out above -- it's a rumor. Apple hasn't confirmed what it's called.

2) Alcohol? First time I've heard of alcohol served in a computer store. Color me skeptical.

3) It's still a black box. If they painted "Welcome to the Ka'ba" on it, I could see getting upset. If they actually are ill-advised enough to paint "Mecca" on it, I could see getting upset. At the moment, it appears people are getting upset over a rumor.

Just curious but: Did Egyptians get upset over the new entrance to the Louvre resembling a Pyramid?

You might be surprised at the insane things people will believe, whether online or not. I had a resident assistant in college who would not drink Snapple products because she believed that Snapple was owned by the KKK. And people like that generally cannot be talked out of their closed-minded stupidity. So I googled Apple Mecca, and the first four pages of hits involved:

countless bits of geek fan speculation like this:
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=3&entry_id=4203
It's being dubbed Apple Mecca, a new and very huge (a whopping 25,000 square feet), mostly underground Apple store in midtown Manhattan, for how its above-ground entrance bears an uncanny resemblance to the big black Ka'bah (AKA: The House O' Abraham) to whence all Islamic pilgrims take their grueling mandatory hajj and also because it shall be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and hence shall be the place New Yorkers shall take a holy pilgrimage whenever they crave a new iPod Nano at 4:00 am or when they desperately need to have the Mac geeks at the Genius Bar instruct them on how to purge all the gay teen chat transcripts and German fetish porn from their iBooks before their Senate confirmation hearings.(what a freakin long sentence)

A blog by someone named Laura Mansfield (note the date):
http://blog.lauramansfield.com/2006/05/29/apple-mecca--jihadis-call-new-manhattan-store-an-insult-to-islam.aspx
Is this going to be another cartoon jihad? Nah- the jihadis like their iPods too much!

Here's what they are saying:

Ka'aba Manhattan: It stays open until morning!!

and this thing:
http://www.mail-archive.com/harakahdaily@yahoogroups.com/msg06159.html

The Islamic hive mind seems awfully quiescent. Other than Laura Mansfield and DK, no one seems to care at all.

Um, the Iraqi army was defeated in like a week or so. Kandahar fell in a similarly ridiculously short time. The enemy soldiers are toast as soon as the US troops invade. The civilians with improvised bombs are a different matter altogether because the US military doesn't have the balls to lay entire cities to waste. Maybe that's a good thing. I don't know.

"teaching them".....Well thats something that involves a certain sincerity to the principles of democracy by the teacher. For instance Germany after WWII was brought back into the democratic fold. As was Japan.

However since then 'teacher' has had a few problems understanding that democracy is something he too must respect. Hence the Shah, Pinochet, Suharto, Marcos, and various genarlissimos in Latin America. Plus "teacher" also plays footsie with Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Togo, Egypt, Jordan, etc not because they are democracies, but because they are his kind of dictatorships.

I think its time '"teacher" retired.
