I was once a cereal killer, I had a friend who ran a pun party every year, and so I walked around all night with a box of cheerios that had a knife sticking out of it and "cheerio blood" spiling out. I was also once a surge protector where I carried around a can of surge and a large sword and looked suspicious of everyone.

Well the whole remembering your ancestors of the previous Halloween traditions, isn't so much against Christianity. But the whole dressing up as demons, witches, and such would be. Either way, its just like christmas, commercialized and lost original intent.

Do you celebrate Christmas? Most of those traditions were borrowed from pagan religions as well, including when it occurs (Jesus was not born December 25th, the early church just set it up that way so that it would compete with the pagan solstice festival of Saturnalia).
Many of the most prominant Christmas traditions come from pre-Christian times. The tree is the most notable one.
If you object to Halloween's pagan origins, you should stop celebrating Christmas as well. I'm not trying to be an asshole, just pointing out that Halloween is hardly the only holiday that was converted from a pagan one.
Even Easter has a bit of pagan stuff carried over. The egg hunt, the name, etc.

We don't celebrate Christmas the way that most people do, we have an advent tree which we use to tell the story of Christ, we don't do Santa, and co. either. I don't have any problem with taking time out in the winter to talk about Jesus' birth, life, death and resurrection. We celebrate Easter, but again not the way most people do. My kids don't have Easter baskets or believe in the bunny, we do an Easter pagent at church, and attend a chocolate seder at the local Temple that tells the story of Passover and talks about the symbolic parts of a passover dinner.
My problem with Halloween is not it's origin in pagan beliefs, but what it is today, all the talk about ghosts and goblins... and spooky things. I don't see the point in telling ghost stories when we don't believe in ghosts.

Halloween rules! What is everyone going to be for halloween this year?
I have several costumes in store as usual, as we do Halloween week at work, I have my annual Halloween parade gig the last two weekends of the month, and at least two different parties.
For work, I'll rotate my usual - GI, cowboy, and scarecrow/farmer.
For the parade, I am the Pumpkin King - it's an oriental potentate style costume, with a big puffy pumpkin crown.
For the parties I'll be doing one or two variations on a lumberjack theme, (depending on the aquisition of a bra that fits as a prop) - Zombie lumberjack (an extension of last year's zombie (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v493/Daistallia/zombi/?action=view¤t=zombi.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch10)) and Monty Python's "I'm a lumberjack, and I'm OK..."
When is halloween?
I have a gig clowning... super fun!
Indeed. I love my Puimkin King gig at the parade.
Possibly wearing this to hand out goodies to the kiddies. (http://katganistan.blogspot.com/, scroll down to my Rennie Garb)
Cool. :D
Hehehe. That reminds me of a friends ensemble punning set. She dressed in a spider costume with Hersheys candies glued all over it, her husband weny in a grim reaper costume with a fedora and a Fuller Brush salesman's case, and they dressed their infant sun in a cat suit and covered his playpen floor with red tin foil. She was Kiss of the Spider Woman, he was Death of a Salesman, the baby was Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and together they were...
...a triple play. :D
I'm going as a bedsheet with two eyeholes cut out.
A classic.
Probably a Matrix agent. "You are scheduled for deletion"
The parade I work has a big costume contest on the final day. For the last 4 years, an ensemble group has done a variety of Matrix themed bits. Last year they mixed The Matrix and Star Wars, for a hilarious and well choreographed slo-mo light saber fight scene.
i'm going to a superhero themed party. don't know what i'm going as yet. anyone know if there's any superhero who's ginger or got some orange in them? otherwise it's dangermouse and i can't be arsed making a mouse costume.
If you follow WWE (or even if you don't), how about Rosey - the "Super Hero in Training" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_and_Rosey)? I almost did that a few years back myself. :D
I'm going as a zombie doctor and helping with a Halloween celebration in a near-by city. I hope to scare a lot of kids again...
Sadly though I fear a repeat of last year where I manged to freak out many people, but was chased by a whole bunch of giggling elementary school kids.
I had great fun chasing people around the train station last year in the Loop Line iteration of the zombie...
I'm going as the prohpet Mohammed.

I might keep in mind the "death of a salesman" for this year's pun party.
Halloween is nothing but an excuse for a bunch of little bastards to run around vandalizing things. I need to buy a shotgun, and some rock salt.

We do have a costume party in November though, it's a completely different thing though.
Why is dressing in a costume (doesn't have to be something scary or something you veiw as evil) and asking people for candy something that many Christians have trouble reconciling with their beleifs? It's celebrating candy day not Samhain . . .

Well the whole remembering your ancestors of the previous Halloween traditions, isn't so much against Christianity. But the whole dressing up as demons, witches, and such would be. Either way, its just like christmas, commercialized and lost original intent.
So don't dress as demons and witches, what is it about dressing as GI Joe or a cowboy that is offesnsive to your religion?

Yep. That's right. You seem to have an objection to celebrating Halloween and Christmas the traditional ways because of something to do with your faith. The only reason I can think of why that would be the case is because both have a lot of older pagan stuff carried over.
I, however, have no qualms about celebrating holidays in full, including the elements of Christianity that have been grafted in. I really don't think god is going to get mad over some little thing like that.
What I'm saying is that if you're going to object to one holiday because of some reason, you should object to all holidays with the objectionable element in them. It's more about being consistant. Object to all of them or none of them.

When one keeps hearing "I object because of my beliefs," without further explanation, one kinda goes to the first reason that makes sense.
I don't think that many who celebrate Halloween believe in ghosts any more than you do. Even the kids. My parents never told me ghosts were real, in fact, it was exactly the opposite. That didn't prevent us from celebrating a fun holiday though.

You seem to have forgotten what it's like to be a child. I'd feel pretty confused if when I was a kid, every other child had gotten a night to dress in costumes, go out at night and get tons of free (from a kid's perspective at least) candy and stay up late, but for some reason my parents said I couldn't.
I've always thought of Halloween as mainly a kid's holiday. A day to get in costumes and roam the neighborhood at night getting bags filled with candy.
The last time I trick or treated almost didn't happen. I was thrilled to be going to Germany, but when I found out that we'd miss Halloween, I was very stricken. Thankfully, since my uncle (who we were visiting) worked on an American army base, we got to trick or treat there (it was a different time, I don't know that such would be allowed today, what with security and all). It was very important in the eyes of a 10 year old who knew that it was probably the last chance to trick or treat.

Hmmm.... now that you've poked me in the curiosity bone, here's what the wiki says (bolding mine):
"Holy Spirit" or "Holy Ghost"
Holy Ghost was the common name for the Holy Spirit in English prior to the 20th century. It is the name used in the Book of Common Prayer and the King James Version of the Bible, and is still used by those who prefer more traditional language, or whose religious vocabulary is largely derived from the King James Version. The original meaning of the English word ghost parallelled the words spirit or soul; only later did the former word come to acquire the specific sense of "disembodied spirit of the dead" and the associated pejorative connotations.
In 1901 the American Standard Version of the Bible translated the name as Holy Spirit, as had the English Revised Version of 1881-1885 upon which it was based. Almost all modern English translations have followed suit. Some languages still use a word that overlaps both English words, such as the German Geist.
In the United Kingdom, Religious Education teachers are told to avoid using "Holy Ghost" as it "suggests a trivial and spooky element to the third part in the Trinity" [1].

That is only in Norfolk, not the UK as a whole.
From previous experience (which I admit to be limited) I've only ever heard the Holy Ghost until I started talking and meeting Americans (and actually paying attention, occasionally, to such things in films) and I had a look in my bible (yeah, I've got one. It was given free in school RS lessons to everyone. Don't know if they do that now...) and it definately refers to Holy Ghost not Spirit.
