The best song of the 21st Century, thus far.

What's the best song of this century so far, in your opinion?

I'm gonna have to go with... "Talk" by Coldplay.

Now the difficult choice, which version of Talk, the final or the "beta"? :(

You're kidding.

I'd nominate a couple based on my personal tastes, and depending on my mood at the time -

"I Swallowed Hard, Like I Understood" by 65daysofstatic, "Funeralopolis" by Electric Wizard (depending how strict you are on "this century", it was from 2000), and "Drought" by Pelican.

The Clash I'll give you, but the Ramones? Yeah, they were pioneers of the punk genre (in terms of it gaining any semblance of popularity) -- at least in the US -- but meh. Far too simplistic. Besides, if we're talking US bands, let's not count out the Stooges who were around before the Ramones.

While I thought "Parachutes" do be a brilliant album, I will have to agree that everything Coldplay has done since has been highly overrated. Their reliance on the 6/8 time signature makes their newer material extremely repetitious.

There are several tracks by Beck, Audioslave, and perhaps The Flaming Lips that are deserving of the title.

I would have to say "Don't Stay", by Linkin Park, or maybe "Jesus of Suburbia", by Green Day. The only even partially good music mentioned on this thread is "Vermillion". I don't like Coldplay very much, but "Speed of Sound" isn't bad.

You nominate old hacks like greenday while calling vermillion only partialy good!?

If you don't think Coldplay is a good band, there is something fucking WRONG with you. Clocks, Talk, Fix You, Speed of Sound, a couple of other that don't come to mind right now...

There may be something wrong with me, but at least I'm not a pussy coldplay fan.

Remember you can't spell Crap without Rap.

How easy it is to criticize when you only hear the pop eMpTyV versions of Rap. I'll bet you've never listened to Rakim, with or without Eric B., or to old Wu Tang. Your opinion of Rap is probably shaped by Puffy or some such other poseur.

I've been to all sorts, from ska punk to heavy metal. From Radiohead to Beastie Boys.

Radiohead sucks too.

Their music has been described as songs you and your grandmother can enjoy. It's weak. It's got no edge. It's uninteresting. It's for pussies.

Thats tough to decide, since I can't think of very many.

I'd have to say that Alone I Break by Korn, or Coming Undone by the same artist are very good.

I never said that. It's just one symptom of pussyhood. You aren't necessarily sick with flu just because you have a fever, but you might be. You're not necessarily a pussy if you listen to coldplay, but you've got one of the symptoms.

Ok … well I do think that those that like cold play may need to further develop their music tastes … this supposed “deep” pop rock really does not appeal to me whatsoever.

I really can't imagine granparents enjoying coldplay. It's not weak, their old stuff was incredibly original with very advanced song writing techniques, they don't just use the same bland old harmonies but riffs that get stuck in your head for weaks. While other bands were mainly composed of ideas from other bands, coldplay were completely revolutional and set a new genre. If you see them live in concert, it's like seeing a really amazing film but having the experiance multiplied by 10000: unpredictable and intense and a crazy experience.

I will say however, their new stuff is shit and Chris Martin is a bit of a ****. Maybe you've only heard their new stuff?

Oh and Radiohead are amazing.

I don't know what to say, I could explain why they are so great musicly in a more complicated way but it would make me sound like a pretentious fuck (and the band too).

They have some of the best Bass Guitar work of the age, next to Tool's Sober, which does have the best use of Bass I've ever heard.

I understand it … I understand musicality I enjoy a large variety of music from classical instrumental to mushroomhead but I don’t find their music to be enjoyable nor interesting.

Though I have hated them sense parachutes … may be tinting my view of them but that style of music would never have been my favorite anyways (god I hated yellow)

I used to hate coldplay. I absolutely despised them and I can understand how they could seem boring or repetative. That is untill I reluctantly saw them.

I'm gonna have to go with... "Talk" by Coldplay.

Now the difficult choice, which version of Talk, the final or the "beta"? :(

Before I die, I wanna go to a Rammstein concert. It's not a concert, it's fucking adventure.Been there; done that. Back in 1998, heh.

Funny, though, that you bring up Bad Brains but don't mention bands like Black Flag or Suicidal Tendencies, or, given your punk-ska bend, bands like the Toasters or Fishbone... ;)And you fail to mention The New York Dolls.

As for the original question, I'm gonna go with "God's Away On Business" by Tom Waits.
