Better question is why would they live in Alaska?
I suppose their arrogance will catch up to them sometime. Oh well. I'd take a crap load of cheap/free oil from Hugo Chavez. If someone is offering to help me and my family in a time of need, i'll take it.

maybe they can take the money they save by not needing AC, refridgeration, and freezers, and spend that on oil
I dont know why it costs so much to get oil in Alaska, but I gather low population with difficult access might have something to do with it.
The comments attributed to some Alaskins are in the article (linked to from the OP) are a worry also. Talk about arrogant idiocy. :rolleyes:

Without reading the link, i surmise it is because of refining capabilites and the ability to transport it there.

They arent allowed to hunt whales for their oil nor personally explore for oil on their land. The rights of whales and Oil Companies are well protected by law.
