What's your opinion towards Vanuatu?
I am not from there, nor have family there, nor have ever been there, nor have, as far as I know, any contact with the place, but what are your opinions towards it?

IIRC, Vanuatu is one of the first places to drown due to rising sea levels.
But I guess this is a small price to pay for our god-given right to use SUVs as city cars.

Vanuatu is an amazing place; it has over 500 native languages. The only problem I have with it is that the people are mostly kristjian, but then you can hardly blame them themselves for the cultural rape perpetrated on them by foreigners.

More like 200. And most Pacific Island nations are devoutly Christian, interestingly enough.
I've actually read a book on Vanuatu. Bridging Mental Boundaries in a Postcolonial Microcosm: Identity and Development in Vanuatu, by William F.S. Miles. Plus a few books which are on Vanuatu and several other countries in the region.

You recall incorrectly. Perhaps you were thinking of Tuvalu?
Many, perhaps most, of Vanuatu's islands are volcanic in origin rather than coral reefs, and are therefore safe from immediate drowning. Volcano tourism is in fact popular, particularly on Tanna (which has some reasonable tourism infrastructure) and Ambrym (which doesn't).
For people interested in European colonial history, perhaps Vanuatu's most interesting quirk is its past as the British-French Co-Dominion of the New Hebrides. It was jointly colonised by both nations - not in separate geographical jurisdictions, but rather the entire island chain was jointly controlled by both. To this day the primary European language can differ from village to village.
Otherwise, most non-Vanuatans chiefly know the nation today as a cheap package holiday destination (particularly on Efate and Espirito Santo) for Australians and Kiwis.

Indeed. The Condominium was popularly known as the Pandemonium, which gives some indication as to how well it worked. ;)
The legacy of that in terms of identity is quite interesting, with political parties and - as Arch pointed out - villages often identifying as francophone or anglophone. And sometimes stereotyping the opposite side. Just like in the good ole' European Entente Cordiale. :D

Kava is a popular intoxicating beverage in many South Pacific countries, including Fiji. I think it used to be mainly ceremonial in most countries, but has now become something people drink any time.

Hawai'i is Polynesian. The ni-Vanuatu are, for the most part, Melanesians. It's a whole different culture.

I refer to the landscape. Both are volcanic, no? And both are very scenic. As for the culture, I am well aware it's different.

The people of Vanatu are an inferior mongrel race that should be exterminated so that their inferior genes don't mix with and defile the genes of good, wholesome folks. Or maybe not. I really know nothing about them and don't particularly care.

Ah, OK. Sorry about that. It's just that most people aren't.
Plus, my interest in foreign countries in mostly in their culture, with their landscapes taking a backseat, so I tend to forget that people may be referring to that aspect. ;)

Well, mainly the Commonwealth countries in the Pacific. Which narrows it down to eleven sovereign nations, plus a smattering of island dependencies (Tokelau, Niue, Pitcairn...).
