Allegiance

Quite simply, what is the order of your loyalty? It is a natural human condition that we organize ourselves into groups, as well as place higher importance upon some groups than others. Ive noticed that the concept has already come up abstractly in several debates, thus I decided to give it its own topic. I'm also curious as to whether there in any correlation between politics, and the order that these allegiances are placed.

I dont mean these in the literal sense. i.e "Who would you be most willing to sacrafice?" after all, these are all important denominations. I mean instead, what is the order of importance that you give them in your daily life?

Mine: (Starting from left), any that I've missed I'll simply edit in.

Using the things you used,

Myself>Family>Friends>State>World>Country>Community

I've never been able to understand people have any sort of loyalty to a particular city, but for the first 22 years of my life I either lived in the country (as in nearest neighbor being a mile away type country) or on a military base, so that would probably explain it. I'm really not all that concerned about the city I currently live in, and moving from one city to another isn't a big deal to me, other than the friends I may have living there.

edit: For me the country thing is really based on the my state. Since my state is in the United States I owe them some sort of loyalty, but if we were to leave the US I wouldn't care too much about them.

Hmmm, you would put your individual self last? Even compared to animals?

family/friends>principles/ethics>self>humanity>environment.

I don't include country or government at all because (A) I think people are superior to governments, (B) "humanity" covers the part of "country" or "nation" that I think is important, and (C) "patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."

that's quite an interesting question. I find myself struggling between putting smaller groups/things first because they're closer to me or bigger groups/things first because they're more important. But essentially it's:

self>life on earth>humanity>my Gods and my religion>Europe>England>family

Although in practice, if I had to choose, I think I'd put my self after religion and before Europe. i.e I would die for my faith, species, or planet, but not for my continent, country, or family. But in principal at least I feel my personal existence is more important than anything elses.

I also came to that conclusion. Any attempt to place something else in the first slot seemed trivial to me. I dont place myself there for the sake of vanity, but instead because human nature requires me to seek my own welfar before any others.

I think the only case that isn't true is with children. Once humans have bred at a replacement level or more (have 2 or more offspring) their most important goal isn't to keep themselves alive, it's to keep their children alive. If that were the case with me I would place my children before myself in the allegiance scale.

Um, may we take it that you haven't met the love of your life yet, since you list unknown people first?

Oh. OK. :)

I guess I should point out that my list is in descending order of importance, left to right. My peeps are most important -- though it's a close call with my frigging strict principles. My friends would never violate them, but my family are a bunch of backstabbing crooks (whom I love, really).

I don't list community, state, country or world in here as I don't feel any allegiance to them. They're not entities I can really deal with, make agreements with or otherwise, so they don't feature on my radar.

"Who would you be most willing to sacrafice?"

Ignifugate yourself as an example for your relatives.
You must be a model for them all.
That the life of any good servant of the people (or god, same crap).
Sacrifice yourself to show them how much you love them, and how much they have to comply to the laws.

I do nearly that... As a great chief I do better. You know how much I'm busy re-writing the Scripturez... Then I delegate a lot of my functions. And in a matter of fact we burn a monk a year in remembrance of how much the great chief suffers for his people.
I know you would prefer me being crucified, but your are not citizen of our glorious country and a pagan of our great religion. You won't understand our ways of dealing such sensible matters.

I say it again sacrifice yourself, you shall be a great master in your field, in your direct environment.

My only allegiance is to myself.

The nature of that allegiance changes daily...but it never expands beyond what I feel I owe to myself.
