Yeah, I'm back. And I require assistance.

My US History teacher has assigned our class to do a project on the urban growth of a major US city. I, in my infinite wisdom, chose Washington DC.
Google is a waste of time, as it just directs me to half-assed blogs written by angry peaceniks and unwashed Christinazis. DC's website just gives me the "happy-good" stuff that you find on the surface. I tried calling the Chamber of Commerce, but all I've got on the other end of the line was this terriblely confused secretary, and they have not returned my emails. The most usable and credible information I've gathered thus far comes from Wikipedia...and that's saying something.

Therefore, I need your help. I'm not asking for information directly, rather resources that you have encountered that you think may be useful. I am specifically looking at
- Political structure and philosophy
- Social Patterns
- Economic growth and history
- Civic and Municipal information
- Relationship within state (or in this case, the District)

Thanks again. Know that the Bolol has returned, and he will post something fun later in compensation for your services.

(And in case you haven't read, Google is useless to me. So if anyone says "Google is your friend", so help me God, I will reach into cyberspace and strangle you through your modem. K thnx bye! ^_^)

Urban Dictionary is great for informal stuff like this. Here is a telling definition from Washington's entry (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=washington+dc):

"A microcosm of all things great and awful about urban America. While some neighborhoods have been splendidly revived and bring to mind Park Slope (Goergetown) and Morningside Heights (Rock Creek), others look like forsaken tracts of Camden or Saint Louis (especially along New York Avenue). The city appears to carry so much weight, but it only has around 550,000 people compared to over 800,000 fifty years ago; by some estimates the population is declining still, by others it's growing. Like how India has a small capital (New Delhi) despite the presence of immense urban centers elsewhere in the country, so it is the case in the U.S. Even though it's no longer the murder capital of the country, the murder rate is still atrociously high (more than 30 murders per 100,000 compared to, say, Los Angeles's 13 or Philly's 20). The traffic is really crazy, also. Though the city's clean, in a lot of places the sidewalks look really neglected and overgrown with weeds. And the Metro, despite being really efficient and reliable, is moreover a means for suburban commuters to go to work in the District and then go home. The stations, though clean, are gloomy in lighting and postapocalyptic in design. And if there's ever a nuclear holocaust, you might have a better chance of if you stay bunkered 150 feet below ground in a Metro station. The way I see it is this. Not counting the government district, one-quarter of the city is off-the-charts gorgeous; one-quarter is a godawful slum, with signs of revitalization in certain pockets; and the remaining half is just a middle-class city."

You might also want to check out Wiki's article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_of_Columbia_voting_rights) on DC statehood and voting rights, which does a good job of characterizing the district's relationship with the federal government.

Ach! I see, then I shall request this humble thread terminated with extreme prejudice.

'Tis a shame...My triumphant return reduced to ash...

And don't think I didn't see that...
