I work for the US Postal Service (as a mail carrier), and since no mail gets delivered on Columbus day (as a side effect, I have the day off), I say, "HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY!!!!!". :D

Maybe we should celebrate Columbus Day and maybe we shouldn't. If you have the day off with pay then count your blessings, see a parade and bitch about it tomorrow. :p
If you don't, at least you will have the satisfaction of knowing you don't celebrate Columbus Day. Have fun at work. ;)

I completely agree with thanking God for our foundation, however, I don't feel that it's fair to give Columbus the full credit. We had the vikings who came from the North along the East coast and then the Asians walking to where Alaska now is and continued migration to the south, and of course we have our native Americans who may have been here the entire time. All being debated to who deserves the credit.
I will say though........"God Bless America!!!" :D

I should point out, because it needs to be said that this year marks the 500th anniversary of the death of Christopher Columbus.
In fourteen hundred ninety two three ships sailed out to sea
The Nina and the Pinta and Santa Marie
As they sailed the stormy seas on that historic day
From way up in the crows nest you could hear Luigi say,
Please Mr. Columbus turna the ship around
Take me back I want to feel my two feet on the ground
Why you tella Isabella that the world is round
Please Mr. Columbus turna the ship around.

Why God? Did he do the night shift on the wheel?
Or did he design the natives disease susceptible on purpose? Are you thanking God for inadvertent plague-bearing on the part of Europeans?
What's to celebrate? He found a landmass he couldn't of missed if he was blind deaf and incontinent.

God does not exist. why do americans celebrate a holiday based on an urban legend anyway?
I love the Columbus Day scene in Godfather Part II. (That's the scene where young Vito, played by Robert DeNiro, blows off Don Fanucci's head.

Don't look at me; I work today. Besides, it means no mail delivery, and that means that we don't get any RSVP cards in the mail from our recently-sent wedding invites.

Well, since he hit the West Indes, there is a pretty decent chance that he could have missed the exact landmass that he found.
And what I have to celebrate is that I've got a day off from classes, and so I slept till noon today rather than spending the whole morning nodding off during a lecture about how my senses coordinate disparate pictures of the world into a single perception of the world and blah, blah, blah, blah.

We don't get Columbus Day off at my school.:(
But it's all right, because I had a three-day weekend anyway, due to Record Day, and I have another three-day weeked this week thanks to Teacher Inservice Day. I can hardly believe that the first quarter of the school year is done...

Columbus effectively delivered knowledge of America to Europe and thence to the rest of the Old World. That's the discovery that counts.

Because, the Vikings slaughtered all of the people they told. They were really amazing, but it doesn't matter if they "discovered" America first, they didn't do anything about it. Plus there is evidence of the Chinese coming to America too, so... we have to celebrate someone "discovering" America, why not Colombus?

Of course, someone with your scary talent and resume of achievement may also deserve some sort of public commemoration too. Or not :p

I had to work today. Apparently we don't consider Columbus Day a real holiday. Which it kind of isn't. In summary, Columbus can go screw a goat.

It was bound to happen eventually. Columbus' luck in being the first well earns him a right to one day a year, in addition to his name gracing the US capitol, a south american country and quite a bit else.
Three cheers for the spread of western civilization.

Ok, on a religous thread I would also say that god doesn't exist, but how the hell does god play into Columbus Day? The man or girl it looks like believes in god. So can you just drop it for one thread and let the person thank who they chose?
