The current prison population in England and Wales is about 80,000.

Do you think that this is too low or too high?

Then why is the thread entitled...?

People would get confused if it said England and Wales in the title. Only when they read my first post they would understand that England and Wales have a separate justice system.

The prison population should be such that it doesn't stretch the resources allocated for the various purposes associated with managing it. As such it is too high (or the resources allocated is too low). Britain has the highest rate of imprisonment in Europe (approximately 0.14% of the population is in jail), so again it's apparently too high. But I'm not going to give an arbitrary figure as to what I think is an acceptable number of people to have imprisoned in this country.

It is a well-established fact that increased political dissent is a contributing factor to increased crime, all other things being equal.

No. As frustration mounts over perceived injustices committed by your government, you become more prone to rash decisions. There is a correlation between this and the crime rate.

Don't laugh, Australia is still vastly underpopulated. So are Canada and New Zealand.

I propose we move rename New Zealand to Israel, move the Jews, and declare peace in the Middle East. Let all disaffected Kiwis have a free move to Australia or Canada. :D

There. We just solved the British prison problem, found a way to peace in the middle east, and Australia's underpopulation problem in two simple steps!

The problem is that the British prison system is vastly overcrowded and the population is increasing at a rate that the prison service cannot keep up with.

The prison population in 1986 was 52,000

Now its 87,000

We need to redefine what passes for a crime in which a prison sentence is needed. We need to do this because there are people who need to be imprisoned for the good of society but at the moment these people are only serving a fraction of their sentence due to over crowding

This topic is stupid. You don't decide how many people are in jail. If they commit crimes, they go to jail. In theory, there could be one, a million or no people at all in jail.
