Today, something happened to me that is a first for me.
I am in the military, and today being the Friday of the Canadian Thanksgiving long weekend, we got cut loose early. So, a buddy of mine head out into town for lunch and we got into this pub, still uniformed and all, in broad daylight.
We sit down, get our menus and we order our drinks. Turns out some gentleman decided that it would be nice to pay for this round. And we're halfway through our first pint when the waitress comes to us and tells us that someone else is buying us a round.
It went on that way for a bit, and in the end all we had to pay for was our meal.
I have to say, this never happened to me before, having random strangers buy me drinks. Now, to anyone else in any military, has anything like this ever happened to you? If so, care to tell us about it?

When I was in the Navy, I gave a french family a tour of my ship, 'USS George Washington' and as thanks, they gave me a loaf of bread.
...um... No. I guess it hasn't. :p

Just once. I was on temporary duty in Bonn, had to deliver some stuff to our embassy in Austria, and I was told to take the train to keep costs down. Since I was on official business, I was wearing my dress blues. When I was in the dining car (this was a while back), I went to pay my bill, only to be told some of the other passengers had gotten a little collection together and paid for my meal for me.
Well, I couldn't tell them that the meal cost would have been refunded to me by the corps. But before I left the dining car, I turned around and gave them as perfect a salute as I could.
It was the only time I really felt welcome in Germany - but it really made me feel welcome.

Last time I went to my Elks lodge people kept buying drinks for the whole bar. Everyone was in a good mood because it was right after the big golf outing. God bless golf. It can get you free drinks without having to risk your life.
