The Human Face

The human face is a very important image; one that, if made to guess, I would assume has appeared in art more than anything else.

When we put it on something inanimate, it makes it seem more "friendly" and when people cover their faces (e.g. muslim veils), it makes people anxious. Sometimes people (like politicians) are said to act as a "face" for something, making it more than just a message.

The face has two functions - to provide identification and to convey emotions*. Thus, covering it up can worry people, as the person is not identifiable and one cannot tell how they are feeling (and their likely behaviour as a result).

In the sense of muslim veils, there is the added problem of the fact that only women wear them - it seems to convey the message that a man's identity and emotions are important, but a woman's aren't - she's just another woman and it doesn't matter how's she's feeling*.

* Note that it's said that most of human communications are non-verbal. Facial expressions being a form of non-verbal communications.

The face's best use is to be ejaculated over.

The human penis also appears in a great deal of art. It, when uncovered, is a pretty good barometer of feelings too. Most men prefer to keep theirs covered. So?

Muslim women wear veils, Hassidic women wear wigs, school children wear uniforms, teenagers wear jeans, judges wear robes, business men wear ties, bikers wear tatooos, supermodels wear spike heels... there could be cases made as to why no one should wear any of these things.

Ultimately, what it comes down to is if they WANT to wear the veil, they can wear the veil. That is the only consideration, what the individual wants. Whatever hang ups YOU have about not being able to see someone's face are yours to deal with.

Bukkake is fun sometimes.

Anyway...

I think the original poster's point is that we simply don't realize how much we associate the human face--or lack thereof--in so many judgements about...well, EVERYTHING.

Except that it can only show one feeling.

With regards to displaying emotions. In the first place people have every right to hide their emotions if they choose. In the second place, force a person out of a veil and the only emotions you are going to read on their face are those caused by the action of removing their veil. Much as if someone stripped your mother naked in public to learn what her body is communicating, the act of forcing one to uncover to an extent they consider immodest is likely to result in emotions that we can all predict without seeing - ie embarrasment, shame, resentment and generalised anxiety.

You obviously aren’t acquainted with my penis. Eloquent and multifaceted.

Sexual arousal isn't an emotion. And it's only one "feeling" anyway.

Ultimately, what it comes down to is if they WANT to wear the veil, they can wear the veil. That is the only consideration, what the individual wants. Whatever hang ups YOU have about not being able to see someone's face are yours to deal with.
Hey, I wasn't advocating a view, I was just explaining why it's only human nature to have an unease about it. If you want to ignore that and decide that it's "hang ups", go ahead. Personally, I think people should be able to wear whatever they like. I was just trying to be scientific about the matter, but I guess attacking the character of your opponents is better than having a rational discussion?

This also contributes to the popularity of both Darth Vader and Boba Fett. Masked villains are always more effective.

And the Phantom of the Opera. He's awesome.

I personally love wearing masks and covering my face whenever I can. It somehow makes me feel safer.

Me too, it's the single most important factor in who I find attractive, the second being the butt.

Love a pretty face, male or female. But some people's faces are more interesting than pretty. I love those the most.
