An even more shocking example was when the CIA inadvertently mistook a news report on a small online satire magazine run by two students that a small village in Canada was a training camp for Al-Qaeda operatives and levelled it with an air strike killing 130 innocent people.

When did we bomb canada? lol lets hope they put it in there so people would check up on them

I believe everything I read is a lie... so YOU owe ME $50. Plus $1,000,000.00 for emotional distress caused by lying to me. My lawyer will be contacting you.

But,... If I believe everything I read,

and then I read that I shouldn't believe everything I read,

then should I now NOT believe what I just READ,

saying to NOT believe everything I read,

leaving me not believing in NOT BELIEVING IN everything I read,

which leaves me believing everything I read, again..!!?

..is this where the pretty gyndroid twins burn out and smolder from the ears?

But then someone can respond with 'thats not true' and confuse the heck out of the readers leaving them despondent and anxious and will question their usual methods of believing everything they read.

If that statistic is true ~SNIP~

I would be very interested to know who made up the sample for that study, considering that everyone in America didn't participate, obviously.

I would also point out that this quote from the article: The results are shocking, proving beyond any doubt that 75% of Americans believe almost everything that they read is immediately suspect because you can't "prove beyond any doubt" anything using inferential statistics - it's based on probability theory and allows us to make probability statements about what the likely state of things are. Now, that said, I'm not necessarily disputing that 75% of whatever sample was used believed everything that they read. What I am saying is that it's a ridiculous leap to go from the data collected with a relatively small sample to a broad generalization about the entire country.

... If I read the story right it was a university that did the study. If they are anything like our survey department here we do a randomized calling solution (we run double the sead through double psudo-random number generators on seperate hardware and software) and using the result to select a number from our list (nation wide usualy but that depends on the survey)

We usualy do a 2000 person sample in nationwide ... a bit bigger on the more loclal things)

06-10-2006, 18:14
Yeah, I gathered that it was research done by a university as well. Knowing that I would still have questions, though. Survey data like that can be done with 2000 people, like you said, but the question remains about what 2000 people were used. Or did they do something else on a smaller scale? External validity is always the big question. What time of day did they do the bulk of the calling, was it only people with listed phone numbers, people self-select in regards to participation so would these results generalize to the people who chose not to participate? Etc.

I'm normally a stickler for these things, but moreso right now because those numbers scare me :p

Frankly, I'm getting sick of all these *fake* articles bashing american intelligence. I'm sure people from the UK would be outraged if I posted a fake article or thread about '80% of Britain is Mentally handicapped.' Even though we all know its false. So please, for the last damn time, stop bashing Americans for no reason except for spite. You really make asses of yourselves by doing so.

Errr... you should, perhaps, ease up on the caffeine? While I am not a fan of the "Polish joke" or any other joke that targets a specific nationality or minority, I do GET that it is a joke. If you, yourself, have never told such a joke, nor understood that the joke must play to a stereotype to work, and also don't understand that just because something IS a stereotype, it is not a universal truth, then perhaps your ranting is somewhat justified.

Other than that, lighten up. It is SO much better to be able to laugh at ourselves than to make war over an imagined slight.

Lets just hope that that 75% are largely concentrated in the 'voters' too apathetic to make it to the ballot.

Just imagine what sort of leader could be elected if the majority of voters were total suckers believeing everything they read!

You could even end up with a religious fundamentalist prepared lie to Americans to convince them to let him go kill tens if not hundreds of thousands of people.
