Secret Societies

I was wondering if anyone here could boast any knowledge about secret societies? Ive moved to an area where they seem to abound greatly. As I started mingling with members and such I found myself at a bit of a quandry. First of all, I support anyones right to be in a secret society, with no enforced observation or obligation of that sort. If they want to be in a secret society, they have a right to the secrets they wish to keep. On the other hand, I've also feared that such could lead to any brand of cronyism-or-"You are a part of us, therefore I will give you favor even in matters that dont involve our group". I suppose they really have a right to this too, but it makes me feel like sort of a second-class citizen in such a community.

Anyway, your thoughts?

If we told you anything, it would hardly be a secret, now would it? :D

I am quite interested in the Freemasons because I like those cheesy books about Knights Templar that litter the fiction charts these days, and they are supposedly the descendants.
I think if you feel left out because these groups are greasing each other's palms, then you should fake an interest in whatever nonsense they subscribe to and try to join in :)

Truth is, its entirely possible that I might be soon enough. That is why I have not named it, I dont want to cheapen the Idea. Im glad you are all taking this so seriously  .

Anyway, In the end I would support them in any challenge to their right to keep secrets, but I still dont always feel completely comfortable in a place where they're tied to almost everything.

I know of a Secret Alliance within NS. From what I understand, The total member count, if made public, would Dwarf the Esus in size and power, running accross all Tech Levels. It was made off Forums and offline in undisclosed Locations. The Leader is my Next Door Neighbor in my Region, but that's just a puppet for the true nation.

But what do I know? I could be making it up, but then, why is the only other nation in my Region The Secret Alliance of The Black Lotus Society? Then again, Lotus has been seen on the forums, playing a mostly Eastren style Nation, and the name could be a take off of the White Lotus Society, that came from China, and or Japan, can't remember which.

I'm in the Cacophony Society.
New Zealand lodge.

It's not overly secret as for it's existence, but it's members are very secretive, and maybe for good reason? ;)

And yes, it has major perks assosiated with it. Not major in a platinum mastercard sort of way, but it's gotten me lots of friendlies in a large range of occupations & skill sets.

You like ambiguosly factual history books too:D? I like the ones that are just so far out there as to be funny. I once read something that suggested that for the latter part of the 20th century the FreeMasons and Knights of Malta were involved in a nuke arms race

Just trying to make a lame joke.

I used to belong to the Elks Lodge. Their cerimonies were supposed to be secret but were really no big deal.

Belonged because they had the best place to eat in town, stronger mixed drinks, and gambling when it wasn't legal everywhere as it is now. Actually the only one I used was the eating. It did give me some business contacts as the "upper class" belonged and ate there.
Not bad

Secret societies have every right and reason to exist. At the same time people who oppose them have every right and reason to expose these secret societies.

Both GW Bush and John Kerry were members. They claim to train leaders. Ha! It's just some uber-rich fraternity, extra-big on spanking, I believe.

My mom told me she saw an ad for the Freemasons on television yesterday. Yes, they are advertising for members. They had some Ben Franklin immitator asking if we felt extraordinary, or something like that. Hey, more than half of the Revolutionaries were Freemasons, and if they feel like bringing back that old tradition in the US, I'll join.

But does this mean they are officially not a secret anymore?

Well, from what I heard, they are the exact opposite of invitation-only. You must ask to be one of their members. So while tv ads are a little odd, It dloesnt violate their history.

3. I stated it's not secret in it's existence, but secret in it's actions. You tell me something we have done (New Zealand lodge) Something we plan to do, and the first name of one of our members.
4. Hey, it's the best answer I could give as I'm not in anything else even remotely close.... Or am I?

Who keeps the metric system down?
We do, we do.
Who keeps Atlantis off the maps?
Who keeps the Martians under wraps?
We do, we do.
Who holds back the electric car?
Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star?
We do, we do.
Who robs cave fish of their sight?
Who rigs every Oscar night?
We do, we do!

Is it me, or somehow do I get the weird feeling that all conspiracy theories and babbling about secret societies like the Illuminati, are merely nothing more than mere analogies from an unknown, extremely long dead satirist with a good imagination and a knack for criticism?

Let's be serious people. Why hasn't anyone else (AFAIK) thought of this?

Because very few people are nerdy enough to be in a position to notice the telling threads through history.

For instance, you would have to be as nerdy as I am to be enough of a fan of 18th century writers and poets to notice how many of them were members of "The Illuminati" at one point or another, and that in every case, "The Illuminati" was a 6-member drinking and whoring club consisting of them and their friends.

Yes, "The Illuminati" do appear and reappear throughout history, but that's only because every few years, 6 rich, drunk intellectuals thought it would be funny to call themselves that.

In fact, I'm thinking of starting a new one myself.
