It's a delicate issue, because once you ban one form of protest, no matter how reprehensible (and Fred and the WBC are about as reprehensible as I've seen in 55 years), you open the door to banning others. No one said living in a supposedly free country would be easy and sometimes you have to put up with assholes.

What people who are targeted by Phelps and his minions should do is bring in their own muscle and physically prevent them from getting anywhere near the funerals. They have no business at the funerals, or any other funeral for that matter. Appeals to the authorities seem to be useless in this matter, so people will just have to do what needs to be done on their own.

I consider myself a defender of civil rights, but even I know this is unacceptable. What are they protesting? I agree. In fact, I don't think blocking funeral protests would be a constitutional issue.

Think about it: when forms of free speech are blocked, it's usually because of the content. Take flag-burning, for instance. Making a law against it would be unconstitutional, because you're telling people that they can't burn the American flag alone, i.e., you can burn anything else in protest, but not this. That is thoughtcrime because it's banning a particular POV.

However, there's nothing wrong with placing a ban on burning things in general. Getting arrested for burning a flag is fine if you would also be arrested for burning a French flag or a poster or a sheet of paper. That way, you are banning not the content of the speech, but the way it is performed.

The same thing should apply to funeral protests. Just place a universal ban on protesting at funerals. It doesn't matter whether you're protesting President Bush or Osama bin Laden. It's illegal, plain and simple.

This isn't hypocritical, by the way. I fully support free speech. I have no problem with the Phelp-ites spewing their filth in the public sphere. Gallagher is a conservative talk radio guy. His website mentions the cancellation of the protest and has a link to the WBC's press release, but doesn't say more than that Phelps' daughter will be on the show for an hour today. I suspect Gallagher was appalled at the prospect and bargained with the WBC to keep them away. Kudos to him for that, if that's the case.

Just an FYI on the protest cancellation thing. Amish funerals are always held in the homes of the deceased, usually by invitation. So all the funerals today were on private property. To curtail the curious and attention-getters certain roads were closed by the police so the services could be conducted without undue publicity or interference. One of the families of one of the slain girls invited the widow and family of the killer to attend their little girl's service if they thought it would help their families grieving. Don't over-romantize the Amish, in alot of ways they are pretty medieval; but they are God-awful good Christians. And in these times that says alot!

I suggest that all Christian organisations band together to create a task force to contain the Phelpsian perversion.

Sometimes I wonder at Phelps and crew claiming to be Christians at all. The only part of Christ's message they seem to have grasped onto is the idea of salvation (basically just for them, of course). The rest of it they ignore in a hateful interpretation of the Old Testament that even the ancient Hebrews probably would have shunned. Christ's message of love - the one that the Gospels focus on - is nowhere to be found in their doctrine.

I'm just waiting for him to picket a funeral around here...my fiancee works at a cemetery that has military funerals from time to time, and although the Westboro Fuck Head Brigade hasn't shown up yet, the people who come to try to block them from shouting down the funerals have.

I would argue that fighting the military will be Phelps' downfall, just as it was Joseph McCarthy's, but McCarthy had legitimacy. No one listens to Phelps.

I agree that these people should not be given the attention they so crave for it only emboldens them, but people want to and should know exactly who these people are and why it is they do what they do. The media should not get into a feeding frenzy over it, but when you have so many news outlets out there it is hard to avoid.
