What do you go on holiday for?

I'm asking because I was invited to Egypt by friends, who have no intention of going to see pyramids, tombs, etc etc. They go away for sunbathing by the pool whereas I prefer wandering round and looking at places of interest (sunbathing = mind numbingly boring!). If I want to spend a week lying around, I can do that at home! :p

Are they also going for the excitment of the chance of being blown up in a terrorist attack?

to relax and be somewhere different. experience new places and things. that can include anything from sightseeing, walking, etc, to taking a keen interest in food and even sunbathing (as its relaxing and not something i generally experience)
i guess i'm an all-rounder then

No...they would go to an American school for danger
Note: I have the deepest sympathies for all affected by the school shooting - I just don't think that people who live in glass houses should throw stones

i go on holiday for a change of scenery, and to get wasted in places where i don't know anyone so i can have more fun.
I can't remember the last time I went on holiday.

I invite you to go and look up casualty figures before I get all statistical on yo' ass.
(One day I'm going to really let rip with my people-afraid-of-terrorism rant.)
Anyway, on topic:
I looked through a holiday brochure we had sitting around at work the other day, and it was so depressing... Nothing but shiny hotels and swimming pools, and some places even sounded proud they had bacon and eggs as food.
Travelling hundreds or thousands of miles to sit beside a pool, get drunk and eat food you could buy in your local supermarket. That's so sad :(

I agree with you there though you missed out the most important reason, the food. I just love trying all the different dishes when I am on holiday, even when on holiday within my own country.

Ah, so its not just me that feels that way :)
I can't understand why you'd spend money flying to god knows where, then not experience any local culture/history.
Generally I'll make an effort to do cultural things during the day, but at night I do just get pissed and talk to the locals in a really broken version of whatever language:p .

there, that's the best way to have a holiday, none of this either or crap. i find that if i go on a purely cultural holiday i feel good about myself and my superior culturedness but i never have that much outright fun. if i go on a holiday where i just stay on the beach and get drunk i have loads of fun but i feel like i've missed out on a tonne of other stuff. there's nothing wrong with sunbathing, splashing about and getting shitfaced and then going to see stuff. or the other way round of you don't want to upset the locals by giggling and arsing about in fancy churches and galleries and stuff.

LOL...we are both i the same boat (so to speak). I have a 6 year old, mortgage and bills but always try and have some extra £'s for a trip away. I am off to Devon shortly and managed a trip to Spain and France earlier in the year

I'm going on holiday to Florida to meet up with some friends of mine who live there and to see the Halloween stuff at Universal. So I guess I go for friends and theme parks.

I go on holiday to challenge myself and possibly change something about myself. Went trekking in south east asia this summer and hoping to go trekking in the arctic next.

Sexual themes and clubbing of course seeing as how clubbing in England is tacky at best (plus the only places I can afford to go are in Europe)
Though during the day I tend to either become a dork and read or go do some tourist crap

I myself am a great devotee of lying on a beach subjecting my skin to the healthful rays of the sun. The occasional foray into the nearest town to encourage the local economy can be fun, too, but is not absolutely necessary. If there are monuments of the past or natural wonders in the vicinity that can be appreciated without having to climb precipitous inclines or walk for miles through insect-infested forests, I'm all for looking at them, but otherwise, I can always stop at the gift shop at the airport and buy postcards.
Needless to say, I prefer vacationing to travel, the difference being that "vacationing" is the more sedentary of the two.

Also (hopefully) try new people;)

I like to go to new places & experience the stuff I can't find at home.
To me, the idea of lying by the hotel pool is a complete waste of time & money.

I go mainly for the pleasure of a truly long drive without having to get back soon. And to get away from being on the computer all the time.
Also, I go for the service:
Maid service. It's great to have someone come in and clean for me! I like clean. I hate cleanING. On vacation, the two don't clash.
Restaurant service. They cook for me, serve me, and get me my soda refills without whining about it. And then ask if there's anything else I want! And I don't have to pretend to be sorry about asking someone else to do that stuff for me...
And, for the pools. Nice, warm pools to swim in. Forget boring sunbathing, though. That water's there for me to swim in, not stare at!
There's no cultural stuff where I go that I haven't seen several instances of already (due to way too many [awful] sightseeing-oriented family vacations), so I don't feel like I "missed out" on anything when I skip the colonial-US museums and various historical sites. I got dragged through all that stuff as a kid, and that was plenty enough.
Maybe if a museum en route had an exhibit of truly exceptional art going on, of the multimillion-dollar quality level, I'd stop to check it out. But more 200-yr old handicrafts just isn't it.
I do enjoy driving around the destination area to see how the locality really is, though.

Holidays? Mainly so I can find some new method of getting an awesome adrenaline rush. Last time it was bungy jumping, time before that was the largest rollercoaster in Spain, Then there's zorbing, downhill carting (with minimal steering) and so forth.
Of course, I can do all that at home too, but it's so much better to do it in new and refreshing scenery :D

I haven't been in about 2 years, because I simply didn't find the time for it.
But I usually love independent vacations, like doing tours through France or Italy, or backpacking. I used to do that a lot more when I was still a student and had the time. It's no big expense, either, and lots of great memories.
I never understood why people do sunbathing holidays... I seriously couldn't think of anything more boring and mindnumbing. And they're bloody expensive, too. Why waste all that money? Really interestin vacations cost not even half of that...
