And In my opinion putting metal detectors will only make these criminals and homocidal maniancs more hardcore because they'll need to find cleverer plans to satisfy their wanton bloodlust, there should be a system meant to deter them from a life of crime or any crime whatsoever and those who are persist should be discouraged...and abolishing the media that encourages crime and all these atrocites would sure be nice, like those movies where the hero is a collosal pervert who mecilessly slaughters hundreds in just one movie. Well, if I remember correctly, the Columbine students waited for class to start before even enterring the building(as far as I can remember, it's been some time, and I was rather young back then-memory not so great), and if you are willing to shoot up some students, then what's stopping you from shooting up the security guard who monitors the detector? Not much. You're planning on killing anyway, and it wouldn't be much of an obstacle.

Yes, bully prevention is vitally important, as well as keeping an eye on those whom may seem "suspicious" for a variety of reasons(Not just possible violence, but also self-destructive behavior).

And as far as the "Big Men" thing is quite stupid, yet it is quite real. It may not matter years down the line, but in life(and especially in high school), it is difficult to imagine life beyond the now. Society should change-but it is doubtful to do so. A person's personal desire often overpowers compassion, and the two often contradict one another. When two forces contradict, and one force is greater than the other, than that force will win out more often than not.

A variety of social and natural pressures would probably be the answer. Children often times have it beaten into their heads "you have to be the best", "WIN, WIN, WIN", and so forth and so on. Our society places a great deal of importance on seemingly pointless positions-More people probably know the quarterback of the Greenbay Packers than there own State Representatives, for example, yet which one is more vital and important?

Most would rather be the guy who is well known, even if it is locally. Very few people want to be unknown. The best way to do this is to become "popular"(It has been in my experience that many popular people are in fact quite unpopular among the student body, even among themselves there is much disrespect and anxiety), and the notion of being popular is that you are better than everyone else. How do you do this? By constantly beating them into submission, not just physically but also mentally and emotionally, to show them that you are so much better than they are. And in my experience, much of this behavior is not only ignored a great deal of the time, but also somewhat encouraged by willful ignorance of authority figures.

So, in essence, society in generally has FUBAR'ed itself completely.

The first blast cleared the backrow

they collapsed like rubber dinghies
when the plug's pulled out

"Please may I leave the room sir?"
a trembling vandal enquired
"Of course you may" said teacher
put the gun to his temple and fired

The Head popped a head round the doorway
to see why a din was being made
nodded understandingly
then tossed in a grenade

And when the ammo was well spent
with blood on every chair
Silence shuffled forward
with its hands up in the air

The teacher surveyed the carnage
the dying and the dead
He waggled a finger severely
"Now let that be a lesson" he said

I don't know if you realize this, but there are ghetto's in Oklahoma, a large percentage of the people in my city live below the poverty level, it's dangerous here.
