This is sad... "America at war terror" and it can't keep the psychos similar to those in Iraq from attacking schools five years after 9/11
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15111439/
And In my opinion putting metal detectors will only make these criminals and homocidal maniancs more hardcore because they'll need to find cleverer plans to satisfy their wanton bloodlust, there should be a system meant to deter them from a life of crime or any crime whatsoever and those who are persist should be discouraged...and abolishing the media that encourages crime and all these atrocites would sure be nice, like those movies where the hero is a collosal pervert who mecilessly slaughters hundreds in just one movie. Its as if F451 is already begining to happen! Children murdering for fun...hmmm...familiar....

Well, if I remember correctly, the Columbine students waited for class to start before even enterring the building(as far as I can remember, it's been some time, and I was rather young back then-memory not so great), and if you are willing to shoot up some students, then what's stopping you from shooting up the security guard who monitors the detector? Not much. You're planning on killing anyway, and it wouldn't be much of an obstacle.
And society needs to shape up... but that's another story for another time... or maybe the word is rant.
Yes. Blame the media. Install metal detectors.
Blame the media, blame TV, blame video games, blame Hollywood.
Everyone likes to blame, no one likes to study.
Personally, I think we should be saying, why?
I have been exposed to tons of violence on TV, movies, video games, books etc., doesn't hold a torch to the real thing.
Killing someone takes some serious will. Not the kind of will you don't get from watching "Rambo".
In murders such as these, planning is evident. In planning, there must be a contemplation of the act itself. To plan violence involves contemplating the violence, which means the child probably understood the gravity of the situation (if they didn't, we need to study this). Crimes of passion involve the gravity of the situation being realized later, but planning means they understood the gravity going in.
So, how about we try to find out what is giving these children the willpower to commit such crimes instead of censoring everything?

That's the easy answer. And if history has taught us anything, what's easy ain't always right.
Hey, let's think now. These boys(columbine, at least) were social outcasts, whom were picked on constantly. Hey, it's the cool thing to do. Preps and jocks just love the power trip they get from doing this, everybody laughs, nobody cares. You humilate someone to make you look machisimo. But, you create a little anger in the person. The bottle it up. It happens the next day, the next, so on and so forth, etc, etc. What do you think will happen if it keeps happening non-stop? It's rather emotionally damaging, let me tell you. Such behavior can lead to depression, suicide, and even violence. What happens when you get all that bottled up anger from public humiliation for years on end? Powder-Keg. The selective killing of the columbines students only further demonstrates this fact.
Everybody LOVES to blame the easy out, Media, because it's just that-the easy out. Nobody likes to look into the matter, and realize, wait a second, I might be to blame. It could be MY fault. I picked on him all those years, maybe I shouldn't have.
But in society, everyone wants to be "The Big Man", and the only way to do it is to trample on others. It's not like it's going to cause any harm.

Ok then the next easy thing eye the groups with suspicion, prevent bullying. And focusing on being the 'big man' in my opinion is stupid because they focus on that instead of real life and when school years are done with their alchy wrecks. Society should be changed to pursue things that matter like being a helpful member of society...not being I'm the cool musclehead who gets the chicks. The selfish I want it all for me culture we have has caused and is causing us multiple problems, if we focused on being useful we wouldn't have this.

Yes, bully prevention is vitally important, as well as keeping an eye on those whom may seem "suspicious" for a variety of reasons(Not just possible violence, but also self-destructive behavior).
And as far as the "Big Men" thing is quite stupid, yet it is quite real. It may not matter years down the line, but in life(and especially in high school), it is difficult to imagine life beyond the now. Society should change-but it is doubtful to do so. A person's personal desire often overpowers compassion, and the two often contradict one another. When two forces contradict, and one force is greater than the other, than that force will win out more often than not.

Yeah....
YOur getting the point. But then I must ask,

A variety of social and natural pressures would probably be the answer. Children often times have it beaten into their heads "you have to be the best", "WIN, WIN, WIN", and so forth and so on. Our society places a great deal of importance on seemingly pointless positions-More people probably know the quarterback of the Greenbay Packers than there own State Representatives, for example, yet which one is more vital and important?
Most would rather be the guy who is well known, even if it is locally. Very few people want to be unknown. The best way to do this is to become "popular"(It has been in my experience that many popular people are in fact quite unpopular among the student body, even among themselves there is much disrespect and anxiety), and the notion of being popular is that you are better than everyone else. How do you do this? By constantly beating them into submission, not just physically but also mentally and emotionally, to show them that you are so much better than they are. And in my experience, much of this behavior is not only ignored a great deal of the time, but also somewhat encouraged by willful ignorance of authority figures.
So, in essence, society in generally has FUBAR'ed itself completely.

The Lesson
(Roger McGough)
Chaos ruled OK in the classroom
as bravely the teacher walked in
the hooligans ignored him
his voice lost in the din
"The theme for today is violence
and homework will be set
I'm going to teach you a lesson
One you'll never forget"
He picked on a boy who was shouting
and throttled him then and there
then garrotted the girl behind him
(the one with grotty hair)
Then sword in hand he hacked his way
between the chattering rows
"First come, first severed" he declared
"fingers, feet or toes"
He threw the sword at a latecomer
it struck with deadly aim
then pulling out a shotgun
he continued with his game
The first blast cleared the backrow
(where those who skive hang out)
they collapsed like rubber dinghies
when the plug's pulled out
"Please may I leave the room sir?"
a trembling vandal enquired
"Of course you may" said teacher
put the gun to his temple and fired
The Head popped a head round the doorway
to see why a din was being made
nodded understandingly
then tossed in a grenade
And when the ammo was well spent
with blood on every chair
Silence shuffled forward
with its hands up in the air
The teacher surveyed the carnage
the dying and the dead
He waggled a finger severely
"Now let that be a lesson" he said
Well guess what. Metal detectors = no guns or other weapons based off of metals. That leaves them with VERY few options as weapons. And we should post two guards on each side of the metal detectors, maybe three or four. Safety, ya know.
Yeah....
Your getting the point. But then I must ask,

Close. Media's partly to blame, but then again everything is in some way or another.
Why do guys want to be cool muscleheads? Why do they want to look cool by picking on people? One word: Girls.
What's most likely a giant source of self-loathing and depression in these shooters' lives? Speaking from personal experience (severe depression and self-loathing all through high school): Girls.
Why girls? Because people need love. The bully is either bullying you because A: His dad beats the crap out of him and he needs to feel a type of self-love, superiority, or B: He's trying to impress a girl he's going after.
And zomg, guess what? -IT WORKS-.
Girls go for that shit. I'm not saying ALL girls go for that shit, but the stereotypical dumbass bitch will always go for it, and for some reason men always want that girl.
I don't want to put restrictions on girls and how they react to idiots, because if they like something then they like something, but the fact remains that their decisions and their attractions affect people in ways they usually never realize or care about.
No idea how to solve that problem, but the problem exists regardless.

not true, I went to a school that had metal detectors and police, I still saw weapons at school, in fact I walked in with drugs, and my boot knife almost everyday. If you want to get it in you will.
We had the walk through metal detectors, 2 security guards, and a police officer with one of those metal detector wands. We had 2 shootings at school my freshman year.

In Oklahoma 23 percent of all children live in poverty.
The national teen birth rate (births per 1,000 females ages 15-17) is 29.
Oklahoma's rate is 33 births per 1,000 females ages 15-17.
27.9 percent of surveyed Oklahoma ninth-graders had made a suicide plan within the last 12 months.
Only 14.6 percent of ninth-graders nationwide had done the same.
25.7 percent of surveyed Oklahoma ninth-graders said they had been physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend.
7.9 percent of ninth-graders nationally reported same.

The suicide thing is kind of irrelevant. All it means is there are more emos in Oklahoma. They probably all went there because of that shitty Hawthorne Heights song "Oklahoma is for Lovers".
And gun control would stop him from shooting. But that violates constitutional rights. A strict curfew would stop him, but that's totalitarian. Shit... Nothing could've really stopped him. If she had been inside the school, she would've been safe...

no, it's because life here sucks. Kids are more likely to be abused by their parents, they go to sleep hungry, they wake up hungry, they go to a school that has metal detectors but no books, and get high and have sex, and have babies when they are 13 with abusive partners.

the problem isn't that there are guns, or who has them, or who is out of their house at what time, or whether or not she was in school before the bell rang...

Yeah... a person who is planning on killing students will never conceive of shooting everyone in their way, including guards. Of course they wouldn't think of a way around this.
These methods are good an all, but they hardly prevent anything. Prevention requires us to snub the problem before it starts.
