I think there is a far more pressing issue here: do tree's have superpowers? And if so how do we harness this raw energy for our own evil purposes?

I don't like it when people damage trees for no reason, but... now there are complaints when Muslims do something that ISN'T murder or terrorism?

It was a 100 year old land mark that the people of Indonesia had attached sentimental and spiritual feelings to.
Then a group of Islamo-facists Juniors hacked it up to force there beliefs down the throat of the other locals.
No, but I do remember the Caro "cell phone terrorists". Unless Detroit extends all the way up to Saginaw Bay now :p
Resistance is futile....prepare for assimilation.
Seriously though, I thought they were from the detroit area, One of the suburbs like Ann Arbor or Canton?

they were from Caro, I phail at reading the news.
If they weren't Islamic, do you honestly think their faith would have been taken into account?
Controversy sell,; the word Muslim sells in the news business. Slap it on to any pointless article and bam, you have interest.

Perhaps we're thinking of different guys. There were the two who were supposed to be plotting to blow up the bridge, those guys were Texans. Those two guys who were arrested in Toledo were from Dearborn.

There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
If it was a Muslim Youth Group it is not beyond reason that they may have viewed the Tree as an idol and thus attacked it.

Nope I was thinking of the Texans who got the phones at the Wal-mart off M-81...I got the locations mixed up between the two.

Between this and blowing up the Buddha's in Afghanistan it makes Muslims look very intolerant as a whole. Moderate Muslims need to make their voices heard.
You have a point but that's not what I'm debating. What I'm saying is that the reason why this is such a big news story is that they were Muslim. If it were anyone else (excluding fundumentalists of any religion) they would have been labeled as vandals.
Eh I would have to see why they destroyed that tree before I start screaming Muslium terrorist.
It says why in the article.
in a bid to dispel rumours the tree harbored special powers.
Also nobody called it terrorism.

I'm pretty sure this was intended to be a joke thread...

lol Will do.
I don't know why some people impress it upon themselves to act the way they do, using their religion as an excuse for everything they do.
I'm Muslim and I don't go around slapping 'infidels' in the face and destroying magical trees. Every Muslim person I know isn't a wacko like the ones you see on TV.
There you have it. out of 1-2 billion Muslims here's one moderate =P

How silly. So some people believe that the tree has powers. So what? Is this group related to the Taliban, that they have to destroy someone else's symbol because they feel it threatens their own?
Maybe we should turn Greenpeace loose on them.

Eh I would have to see why they destroyed that tree before I start screaming Muslium terrorist.
it is pretty obvious in the article why they destroyed the tree. if you wish to ignore the fact that they are muslim, then you are trying too hard to politically correct.
They vandalized the tree because of their faith and radicalism. The tree apparently meant alot to the local community and as mentioned in the article was believed to possess mystical powers. Animists believe in this sort of thing and this is a different religion than Islam.
Muslims destroyed Buddhist statues in Afghanistan that were over a thousand years old because they were seen as blasphemy...the same deal with this tree.
believe it or not, just a tree or not, this is very similar to the destruction of those historically sacred statues, the murder of a dutch filmmaker who dared question muslim mens treatment of women and the frenzied riots that took place because of a cartoon. Their religion is relevant and it is a factor.
It is true not all Muslims are terrorists but it is also true that most terrorists are muslim.
This problem will not be solved until radical muslim schools that pedal hate and destruction to children are shut down in islamic countries such as Indonesia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran and other countries that tolerate it.
all i know is the PC crowd was frothing at the mouth when some old man smeared paint on a painting in the Brooklyn Museam of Art which portrayed the Virgin Mary covered in elephant dung and vaginas, calling him a carazy Christian; but now I hear people saying the desecration of a 100 year old tree cherished by a whole community is not a big deal and that the vandals' religion, which happens to be muslim, should not be considered despite all the crap that has been going on lately related to radical islamists?

journalist: Young people vandalized a tree. Yawn. What, they were Muslim young people! Tell me all about it!!
local police chief: we know who it was but we're not going to take any action against them ...
journo: Why not?? Because they're Muslims and you're afraid of them? Or are you corrupt? Is it something to do with widening the bus lane?
chief: No, we don't need to take any action. They'll all get sick and die any day now ... :D

Indonesia is a predominately Muslim country almost 97% if I remember correctly. The tree was not connected to any particular religion, just the subject of rumors of magical power....

Well, there is well over a billion more just like you. But the fact remains, Moderate muslims are not getting their voices out. They do not scream as loud as the crazy minority and even allow many supposed moderate muslims to speak for them publicly who sympathise with the terrorists to some extent or go off on a tangent about Zionist conspiracies like they were Mel Gibson.
C.A.I.R. rarely renounces acts such as this, yet they are considered the "Voice of the moderates" here in America? absurd.
Moderate muslims need to take their faith back. yet large portions of the worldwide muslim population allows themselves to be distracted by "zionist conspiracies". all that is is an attempt by their government to divert attention from their country's high unemployment levels and lack of basic goods and services due to corruption.
Btw, not only is what they did wrong, but it being Ramadan now and all, what those fools have done is even more of a sin to have been committed during this month.
Durring Ramadan Muslims are supposed to be the best they can be as people. Be penitent, chartiable, most of all tolerant and nice.
--1000 years ago it would have been expected from anyone from any religion. (hell they had capital punishment for people who stole cabage...Cabage!!!!)
--Today its just wrong.
Edit: Daemonocracy: I totally agree with you. Though I don't know about CIAR. I gotta do some research on them first.

Indonesia is a predominately Muslim country almost 97% if I remember correctly. The tree was not connected to any particular religion, just the subject of rumors of magical power....
Indonesia, like Afghanistan where the buddhist statues were destroyed, was once dominated by another religion long before Islam was introduced. Alot of the customs and beliefs of the old Animist religion sort of blended with the new muslim religion, similar to how elements of the old Incan religion in South America blended with Catholicism after colonization.
The population had a spiritual connection to that tree, yet you seem to want to just shrug that off in an almost callous manner.
If the tree was so unimportant, why did the Young Male Muslims try to destroy it? Why was the community so devastated? Why was a major highway built around the tree in an attempt to preserve it?

Originally the Gov't did not want to cut down the tree simply because it was so old, and as you put it, a landmark. Then rumors popped up that the tree was magical and could not be felled. So the nutjobs, seeing it as an affront to islamic monotheism(which is bullshit, angels, demons(jinn) exist within islamic tradition, just because its monotheistic doesnt mean it forbids the belief in magic) so they attacked it to disprove the rumors, their leader probably incited it, I blame the youth group, not the whole damn religion.
Im not saying the tree is unimportant, Im saying that it is not a world heritage/religious site. Before the highway was built there was no magical belief in the tree.

lol, it has come to my attention after reading some of these posts that some of you take this a little too seriously. what the hell is this calling me a racist? all i did was post a link to an article that talks about a muslim youth group that went jihad on a tree with magical powers. so i guess im racist for mentioning a religios group of people?
this thread was more or less just meant to be a laugh, stop taking life so seriously and maybe you will realize that there arn't so many problems in the world.

ok, your point is more clear now. I too do not approve the whole religion being blamed, that is unfair and is defamation. I also would not call the young men simply a youth group, but a radical or militant islamic group. Their fundamentalism needs mention as far as I am concerned. But this fundamentalism is a perversion of the faith as a whole.

Pretty stupid.
