Big blow for the online gambling firms. Not such a safe investment any more.

Any opinions? Will it really greatly affect the general public?

On a side note has this had much coverage in the US?

It won't end it, but it hasn't done it any good.

What's that silly law for, anyway?

Can we bet on if internet gambling survives?

I'm sure they'll find a way around it, casinos are very good about that sort of thing.

Of course, speaking as a Nevadan, I'm pretty happy with it as it means more people will probably come to my home state to get their fix and give us their money.

;) I was trying to explain the Nevada economy to some friends in Japan and I had to reduce it to:

Me: "People come to my state and give us their money for no real reason."
Them: "And people actually do this?"
Me: "Oh yes, to the tune of a couple of billion dollars a year."
Them: "Americans are weird."

You know whats even weirder? I went to Nevada and they gave ME money for no particular reason. What a country!

And when was the last time you were in a casino? Ive pretty much done the US casino tour and there are huge numbers of wealthy Asians including Japaneese that flock to casinos in huge numbers. There are a number of Japaneese "whales" (high rollers) and im fairly certian that the Japaneese in general are familiar with the economics of gambling.

Actually, it wasn't Japanese friends, but in any case it was the idea of the bulk of a state's economy, tax base, and planning is based upon the idea that people just come and give us money that they found odd.

Most people don't live with slot machines in their supermarkets or greeting them the minute they step out of the gate at the airport after all.

Still no truth to the rummor that the universities have slots in them though. :D

So the gambling sites will get servers overseas, and people will still use it. Less money going to the US government now.

You obviously dont understand how internet gambling works. Servers are now already overseas. The servers are out of US control and always have been. What the US can control is money flow. Internet companies were using money funneled thru paypal and western union and credit cards to exchange money back and forth with thier customers. They have made it illegal for these financial companies to do business with these gambling companies, thus in effect shutting down the business.

In fact, since the law targets paying online gambling sites, people will also do their banking offshore, if they really want to gamble online.

It's brilliant! Hell, you could deal with identity theft and phishing by banning online banking too! "freemoney.com.cz sounds good to me, I'll open an account!"

EDIT: I'll add, for IF, that this damages the interests of Western Union and all those more than it damages the interests of the gambling sites. Banks can fight back (lobbyists) ... and they will.

EDIT(2): On second thoughts, I guess the market has it right. This is very damaging to the interests of online gambling sites. <mutters> mickey-mouse democracy ... protecting people from the consequences of their own choices ... nanny state ... bah ... yay Thailand, bring back monarchy ...</mutter>
