This is absolute brilliance! The GOP is fucked. :) This close to the election, they dare not sweep allegations under the rug, and it looks like they tried to keep a lid on it until after the election. Maybe they even were. :p

The timing of this is absoultely superb and my hats off to whoever set off this political bombshell. I wonder who did? Did a democrat leak this to the press and force Foley to beat the allegations against him by resigning? Did the kid and his family do it as revenge? Did Foley choose this time himself to sabotage his own party(who were probbly going to hang him out to dry after the election anyway)?

We might never know. But someone is devious genius. :)

And of course, regardless of who did what, the Democrats are all over this like flies on shit. As is their job: to take advantage or perceived weakness. :)

But there is one thing I will not approve of: -gate names. Foleygate; E-mailgate, Sickogate...I just know someone is going to call it one of these and when they do, I will be there with a giant mallet! DO NOT TEST ME!

Carry on. :)

With Foley's name on the ballot. Whoever they pick will have a snowball's chance in hell. :)

This way, the GOP leadership has time to shoot themselves in the foot over their handling of the Foley case and the subsequent investigation. THey are being remarkably diligent about investigating, but that's because they have no choice. At first, they resisted an investigation by the House Ethics Committee into who knew what when, instead just sending Foley to the gallows. But now, they are calling for a nice lengthy FBI investigation of who knew what, when. But there are still very powerful calls for the Ethics Committee to do their own speedy investigation. People are going to wonder why these other congressmen knew about Foley's inappropriate actions almost a year ago and did nothing. I know I am. ;)

I don't rejoice to find that our public officials are corupt. Be they of whatever party they may. In this incesent party strife and political manuvering, most times even if your party wins the country loses.

I think George Washington was right about party politics. I fear that this partisan strife will only deepen and continue to devide this country until it brings us to civil war.

It doesn't matter who wins, both parties have their hands reeking with corruption.

Honest men and women, of whatever political persuasion, should spend as much energy seeking to root out and destroy corruption in their political parties (if not, more so) as they spend securing the victory of it's candidates.

What have you won if your party wins the race, but the man or woman you helped to place in the governmental seat is corrupt?

Actually, they derailed the House Ethics Investigation with some fancy footwork and turned it from an immediate investigation to one done at the discretion of the committee, and if you look at Hastert's letter to the FBI, his request is actually for them to investigate how the letters got out as opposed to who knew what and when. There's the outward sign that the Republican leadership is doing something, but they're really still actively working the coverup.

The Dem spin so far is that Hastert and Boehner (What a hard name to have right now) knew.So did Alexander, Shimkus, Reynolds. That's not spin. That's accurate, and backed up by multiple sources.

And apparently, the pages were warned about Foley as early as 2001, and there was evidence of explicit emails as early as 2003 (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/01/AR2006100100644.html).

Sad thing is that most of them are probably safe, at least for this cycle. They all have challengers, but they're nominal challengers in most cases, someone to fill the ballot space opposite in case something happens, and while this could be that something, that's a lot to hope for.

I'm disturbed by all this glee at the potential downfall of Republicans. You people are vultures!

Why would you people want the Republicans to fail? They are the party that stands for decent morals and family values. The fact that some of them may like to engage in sexual predation of innocent young children, and the rest are happy to cover it up for political gain is no excuse for not supporting a group well known for their constant calls for improved morality and a return to family values.

This is the party that runs on a stand of publically asserting Christian values, morality and the importance of family. Why would you let a bit of underage-boy-fiddling distract you from their constant assertions regarding their own morality and concern for family values? If the Republicans fail in the upcoming elections then the US might be deprived of their moral-leadership. Where will the children be then? Dont any of you care about the children? Please think about the children!

Worse yet, he's insinuating that it was the alcohol that caused him to do it. I was kind of proud of him for admitting fault at first, but then I read how he describes what he did - "I'm going to rehab because of alcoholism and the things that come along with it" - to paraphrase from memory.

Does this mean he supports pederasty, and by extension, that the position of the republican congress is that pederasty is fine? It's tempting to make that leap, but I think the answer is more venal than that. I think it was hubris, the glorying feeling of unchallenged power. I think Hastert thought no one would ever find out, that they could cover it up, and in the meantime, the Party still has a good fundraiser and a safe district.

Well, there IS precedent after all. In Clinton's case they went with The Lewinski Scandal over Monica-gate.

So..... errrrr ....... ummmm ......

How about if we just call it "Another Page in the Republican playbook...."

How about "Studds-gate II", in (dis)honor of former M-Ass-achusetts Democrat Gerry Studds, who ass-raped a minor page boy in the 1970's?

Oops, I forgot. Boy Studds never apologized, didn't resign, wasn't expelled from the House, wasn't criminally investigated, and kept on polluting the Congress with his presence into the 1990's thanks to pervert-friendly chowderhead voters. Can't very well have "Studds-gate II" if you never had "Studds-gate I".

The Studds-o-crat Party has no standing to open its yap about Foley.

So maybe "Desperate Demo-gate" would do instead.

BTW: there should be a criminal probe of Foley, and if he went beyond IM's and e-mails to actual molestation of a minor ala Studds, he should be thrown in prison, preferably among the general population.

Well, if you're going to pull crap from the past (and crap that was not proven to exist) to cover it up, I'm sure the democrats will also be glad to remind everyone about Watergate, Iran-Contra, which DID happen...

you ignore that Dan Crane was also censured the same year for the same reason...and he was republican.

And yet, it still has no relevance to THIS case. Just because one person gets away with a crime does not permit others to do so. Please, save your rant about Massachusets for something it is relevant to.

"New Mittani, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul." -paraphrased from 'Billy Madison'.

I would point out the factual inaccuracies in his post, but as he's physically unable to understand anything that hasn't been imprinted on blank space, it wouldn't have an effect. Sometimes, I swear I think guys like him only have ROM in their heads installed at the factory, and no RAM whatsoever.

Censure, schmensure. The fact is that Studds was an unrepentant child molestor who was allowed to remain in the Congress. Crane, in sharp contrast, both apologized for his misconduct and was not re-elected by his constituents.

And yet, it still has no relevance to THIS case.

It has immediate and obvious relevance to the utter hypocrisy and mendacity of the Democrat Party in attempting to exploit for partisan gain a situation whose even more egregious analog did not provoke them to similar outrage when it was one of their own partisans who was the miscreant.

Just because one person gets away with a crime does not permit others to do so. Please, save your rant about Massachusets for something it is relevant to.

Please point out where exactly I suggested letting Foley "get a way with a crime." Gee, maybe I wasn't clear enough in that last paragraph where I said he should be thrown in prison. Next time I'll use boldface print.

LG, first let me say, you have one of the most appropriate handles on this board.

Second, could it be that you favor taking no further action against Foley? Since you view the last paragraph of my post as not being "close to anything that could be considered a rational thought," one could conclude that you don't think advocating jailing him should the facts warrant it to be a "rational thought." If so, congratulations for being one of the few to think Foley should get off (so to speak) without punishment.

Third, your ability to discern "rational thought" is obviously suspect in view of your own rambling incoherence. I won't bother explaining my post to you any further because it would be like trying to explain the theory of evolution to homo habilis, if not australopithecus afarensis. Let's just refer to you as "Lucy" and leave it at that.

Now go home and reconsider your life. :p

goddamn. How is it that if one person screws up the entire population has to suffer. Foley was a dumbshit...but why do all republicans all of a sudden suffer. Whoopity shit. im sure theres a democrat emailing young boys too. Why should this have any bearing on the midterm elections? Its not like repbulican=child molester.

The people who should suffer here are Foley and anyone who knew what was going on--and right now that looks like Boehner, Reynolds, Shimkus and Hastert at the very least. The leadership has to go because of this. Foley's actions didn't happen in a vacuum--there were enablers, and those four, right now, are the primary targets.

As to the accusation against a Democrat, I'd be willing to bet that if there were even a hint of it right now, that kid would have already been paraded past every mook with a mike in DC.

As to why it should affect the midterms, the answer is easy--it shows the Republicans can't be trusted to lead. They can't protect kids in their care, and they can't protect the country.

It's not that they can't protect the kids in their care...it's that they won't.

Which is ten times worse.

It won't happen though. Republicans are in full damage control with FOX News doing their part to help. You know once again they brought Clinton into this? Apparently Monica was the same thing as a 16 year old boy.

Besides as Tony Snow said they were only "naughty e-mails" right?
