I know some of you were aware of my recent unionist activity. Some of you are not.
For those who are, I thought you might like to know about our recent victory. For those who know me, and were not aware, this may or may not surpeise you. For anybody else, take it as you will.
We won a big victory about a month ago, and it went into effect today. As of today I am legally enrolled in a health and pension plan! Woo-hoo!
What's even better, the Japanese national health and pension is subject to an agreement with the US that works out to equivilancy with social security!
Here's the announcement: http://www.generalunion.org/news/news/news.php?id=46
As part of the same agreement, we recieved a settlement for back payment of overtime work that had gone unpaid to the tune of about US$800.
At tonight's branch meeting for ECC, I volunteered as the ECC "union rep" for the Osaka area - it'd not really a big deal - I'm just a sort of point man providing info to potential new members.
Just so you have an idea, ECC employees about 200 native speaking English teachers in the Kansai area, and we've unionized about 10%
